Due to the geographical distribution, different cognitive capacity, and different domain competency of workers or learners, many misunderstandings can occur during Web based remote collaboration, leading to inefficient discussions and undesired results. To overcome these problems, a “Multimedia adaptive utilization” framework for dependable web based collaboration is proposed and evaluated. This assesses situations of remote users through fusing information of multiple biological sensors and the related contexts such as user profiles. Transmitting and using such information, the system adaptively supports Web based remote collaboration by stressing, warning, and presenting keywords/ summaries in multimedia. Then, effects of adaptive keyword/summary presentation are evaluated as to cognitive profiles of users such as short term memory capacity and associative learning skills when misunderstanding possibilities are estimated on the Web. These evaluations totally demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed method.

In this work we describe a system for the monitoring and management of patients with neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on Parkinson's Disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The system exploits a single wearable sensors' setting to detect and quantify all patient symptoms. An easy to use touchscreen interface allows patients and caregivers to provide additional useful information and assist patients to perform standard predefined tests which otherwise are performed in the clinician's office. The system exploits patient information to suggest appropriate treatment changes based on accumulated medical knowledge. In this paper the architecture of the system, as well as, its innovative features are presented.

In grid and cloud computing infrastructures, the integrity of a computing platform is a critical security requirement in order to provide secure and honest computing environments to service providers and resource consumers. However, due to the fact that software components running on a single platform are usually provided and maintained by different authorities which are potentially untrusted to each other, the problem to monitor and protect runtime system integrity become very challenging and has not been well addressed yet. In this paper, we present a virtualization based dynamic integrity protection method which ensures that only appropriate authorities can control over their components without interfering with other component providers or authorities. In our solution, integrity requirements defined by the authorities of upper components (e.g., service middleware and applications) are respected by preventing the underlying components (e.g., operating system) from exposing their sensitive data, which can be caused by update of the underlying components or other malicious actions. We implement our solution on Xen-based platform, and our evaluation results show that the solution is effective for integrity protection with acceptable performance overhead.

In this work, we present the concept, the architecture and the evaluation of the INTREPID system. INTREPID is an advanced monitoring system which optimally classifies an individual's emotional state based on 5 pre-defined emotional classes, (relaxed, neutral, startled, apprehensive and very apprehensive), through association of the information arising from specific biological signals (Blood Volume Pulse, Heart Rate, Galvanic Skin Response and Respiration). The system is utilized for the monitoring of patients with anxiety disorder during therapeutic sessions. It is validated using data obtained through an emotion elicitation experiment based on the International Affective Picture System. An overall classification ratio of 85% is obtained.

This paper describes a working prototype which illustrates how socially constructed knowledge (specifically through collaborative tagging) can support domain experts to enrich ontological domain representations. E-learning has a particular requirement for a simple yet reliable ontology enrichment approach since domain experts usually lack knowledge engineering skills and domain representations are undergoing constant refinement. Our prototype serves to demonstrate our belief that the user interface of semantic-rich systems must be intuitive and necessarily simplistic, and provide support to the user at each step of the enrichment process.
