Understanding the intricacies behind concurrency within object-oriented programming languages has always been a challenge for undergraduate students. While the lecture is a relatively passive learning experience for the student, the use of software visualisation offers the chance to examine the concepts covered in the lecture in an interactive, visual environment. Students can add further dimensions and greater depth to their understanding previously hindered by the pedagogy of this passive environment. Elucidate makes use of the JDI architecture in the Java language to create its own environment that allows students to execute any program within it. Elucidate utilises several information workspaces, each presenting a different perspective about the information, thus facilitating a students ability to employ it in a manner that best allows them to construct their own understanding. Students are able to navigate around multiple views, and through various levels of abstraction, revealing the inner workings and sequence of events in what would otherwise be a black-box program. © 2009 ACM.

Grouping problems arise in many industrial and medical applications;examples include bin packing, workshop layout design, and graph colouring. This type of problem has been successfully handled using Grouping Genetic Algorithms. However in problems where there are perhaps thousands of objects to be grouped, we have found that Genetic Algorithm approaches can run into problems. This paper continues our research into a method we have developed for decomposing a large number of objects into mutually exclusive subsets where within-group dependencies are high and between-group dependencies are low. The method uses an Evolutionary Algorithm approach but where the whole population is a solution to the grouping problem rather than considering many candidate solutions. This reduces the resource overheads during computer implementation and the results are promising when compared with standard statistical methods and a Hill Climbing algorithm, all applied to email log file data. © 2002-IOS Press. As a contribution to the metatheory of reasoning about actions, we present some characteristics of the consistency of action theories. Three levels of consistency are investigated for the evaluation of action descriptions: uniform consistency, consistency of formulas and regional consistency. The first two provide an intuitive resolution of problems of explanation conflicts and fluent dependency. The concept of regional consistency provides for a measure of ramification. A highly expressive form of action descriptions, the normal form, is introduced to facilitate this analysis. The relative satisfiability of the situation calculus is generalized to accommodate non-deterministic effects and ramifications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

We present an abstract generalization of arc consistency which subsumes the definition of arc consistency in classical CSPs. Our generalization is based on the view of local consistency as technique for approximation of marginal solutions. These approximations are intended for use as heuristics during *** show that this generalization leads to useful application in classical CSPs as well as non-classical CSPs such as MaxCSP, and instances of the Semi-ring CSP formalism developed by Bistarelli et al. [2]. We demonstrate the application ofthe theory by developing a novel algorithm for use in solving MaxCSP. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

A great challenge for web site designers is how to ensure users' easy access to important web pages efficiently. In this paper we present a clustering-based approach to address this problem. Our approach to this challenge is to perform efficient and effective correlation analysis based on web logs and construct clusters of web pages to reflect the co-visit behavior of web site users. We present a novel approach for adapting previous clustering algorithms that are designed for databases in the problem domain of web page clustering, and show that our new methods can generate high-quality clusters for very large web logs when previous methods fail. Based on the high-quality clustering results, we then apply the data-mined clustering knowledge to the problem of adapting web interfaces to improve users' performance. We develop an automatic method for web interface adaptation: by introducing index pages that minimize overall user browsing costs. The index pages are aimed at providing short cuts for users to ensure that users get to their objective web pages fast, and we solve a previously open problem of how to determine an optimal number of index pages. We empirically show that our approach performs better than many of the previous algorithms based on experiments on several realistic web log files. © 2002, Springer-Verlag London Limited.

We describe our work on the development of Language and Evaluation Resources for the evaluation of summaries in English and Chinese. The language resources include a parallel corpus of English and Chinese texts which are translations of each other, a set of queries in both languages, clusters of documents relevants to each query, sentence relevance measures for each sentence in the document clusters, and manual multi-document summaries at different compression rates. The evaluation resources consist of metrics for measuring the content of automatic summaries against reference summaries. The framework can be used in the evaluation of extractive, non-extractive, single and multi-document summarization. We focus on the resources developed that are made available for the research community.

As software agents get more sophisticated, it becomes difficult to understand and model such systems. This paper contends that all developers bring to the task of development some implicit or explicit assumptions of the agent communication pattern. This issue is not readily addressed in current literature and represents a gap in knowledge. For this purpose, a generic pattern of inter-agent communication is introduced and discussed in this paper. For better understanding and modelling of agent-based e-commerce systems, the semiotic approach and the DEMO transaction concept are briefly introduced. It is shown that the semiotic approach offers a unifying framework for identifying the roles of agents, the responsible human agents and the right/constraints associated with each role. The DEMO transaction concept is applied to model the communicative interaction between agents.
