We describe our work on the development of Language and Evaluation Resources for the evaluation of summaries in English and Chinese. The language resources include a parallel corpus of English and Chinese texts which are translations of each other, a set of queries in both languages, clusters of documents relevants to each query, sentence relevance measures for each sentence in the document clusters, and manual multi-document summaries at different compression rates. The evaluation resources consist of metrics for measuring the content of automatic summaries against reference summaries. The framework can be used in the evaluation of extractive, non-extractive, single and multi-document summarization. We focus on the resources developed that are made available for the research community.

As software agents get more sophisticated, it becomes difficult to understand and model such systems. This paper contends that all developers bring to the task of development some implicit or explicit assumptions of the agent communication pattern. This issue is not readily addressed in current literature and represents a gap in knowledge. For this purpose, a generic pattern of inter-agent communication is introduced and discussed in this paper. For better understanding and modelling of agent-based e-commerce systems, the semiotic approach and the DEMO transaction concept are briefly introduced. It is shown that the semiotic approach offers a unifying framework for identifying the roles of agents, the responsible human agents and the right/constraints associated with each role. The DEMO transaction concept is applied to model the communicative interaction between agents.
We designed and implemented a traffic accident analysis system (TAAS) in the paper. TAAS is the system faced traffic accident analysis, which uses the traffic rules (law) as knowledge sources to judge if the driver is...

We present an analysis of the needs of groups of individuals for positioning information using mobile multimedia terminals for accessing location-based information. We consider first a simple framework relating the needs of individuals and groups to information about the location of other group members. The concept of a layered service for delivering position-dependent information to mobile devices is discussed. We present the results of a study which found that people felt that organizing successful rendezvous was problematic but that this could be assisted by a suitably designed mobile positioning service. We introduce the main features of an implementation addressing the provision of position-sensitive groupware services.

In this paper we discuss discrete-time systems which have constraints on all or part of the inputs as well as on the states of the system. We show that solvability of stabilization problems is closely related to two important concepts: right-invertibility of the constraints and the constraint invariant zeros. In the case of right-invertible constraints we give constructive methods to determine suitable controllers.

Output regulation of discrete-time linear systems with state and/or input constraints on magnitude is considered. The structural properties of linear plants are identified under which the so called constrained semiglobal and global output regulation problems are solvable. As in the case of continuous-time systems, an important aspect of our development is a taxonomy of constraints to show a clear relationship between the type of constraints and the output regulation results. Solvability conditions are developed for semiglobal and global output regulation problems. Appropriate regulators are constructed.

Having studied during the last decade several aspects of several control design problems for linear systems subject to magnitude and rate constraints on control variables, during the last two years the research has broadened to include magnitude constraints on control variables as well as state variables. Recent work by Han et al. (2000), Hou et al. (1998) and Saberi et al. (2002) considered linear systems in a general framework for constraints including both input magnitude constraints as well as state magnitude constraints. In particular, Saberi et al. consider internal stabilization while Han et al. consider output regulation in different frameworks, namely a global, semiglobal, and regional framework. These problems require very strong solvability conditions. Therefore, a main focus for future research should focus on finding a controller with a large domain of attraction and some good rejection properties for disturbances restricted to some bounded set.
Short, high-dimensionalMultivariateTime Series (MTS) data are common in many fields such as medicine, finance and science, and any advance in modelling this kind of data would be beneficial. Nowhere is this more true ...

Professor John Belcher developed a series of short videos with animation and text of selected experiments to properly demonstrate the phenomena of electromagnetism. Such 3D animations are visually compelling, instilling in the student both a sense of wonder about the phenomena and a mental model of why and how it works. The products of these approach includes video clips of demonstrations, 3D animations of these demonstration which display time changing field-lines as a guide to understanding their dynamical effects and Java applets which allow the student to actively construct and animate 2D field lines for varying configurations of sources. These technologies are also implemented to develop animations for Faraday's insights, using video clips.
