A Basic Sequential Variable Neighbourhood Descent and neighbourhood uses for the Beam Angle Optimisation problem

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a treatment alternative for cancer treatment. The primary objective of IMRT is to eradicate cancer cells from the tumour site while minimising harm to the surrounding Organs at Risk (OAR). The first step toward achieving this goal is determining the optimal beam angle configuration (BAC) for the treatment plan. In this paper, we propose studying the Basic Sequential Variable Neighbourhood Descent (BVND) algorithm that explores the search space using two types of movements. The first movement (N-1 ) replaces a beam angle in the BAC by a +/- 5 degrees beam angle, while the second movement (N-2) replaces a beam angle in the BAC by a randomly chosen beam angle. Unlike traditional VNS algorithms, the BVND algorithm obtains a final solution that is locally optimal for the neighbourhood N-1 and approximately locally optimal for neighbourhood N-2. This BVND algorithm ensures that the final solution is locally optimal for neighbourhood N-1 and approximately locally optimal for neighbourhood N-2. Results show that N(2 )movement is more commonly used in early iterations, often giving better improvements, while N-1 movement is more commonly used in later iterations, maintaining a stable improvement across iterations. We try our approach on a set of clinical prostate cases from a hospital in Chile. The BVND is a robust algorithm that can obtain high-quality treatment plans at the cost of more computational time compared to other VNS-based algorithms, although it is shown to perform quite well, too, under a limited number of function evaluations. The BVND proved to be a robust algorithm that can obtain high-quality treatment plans at the cost of more computational time than other VNS-based algorithms. Comparative Analysis of Volumetric Mass Transfer Coefficients for Oxygen Uptake and Desorption with Nanobubbles

The volumetric mass transfer coefficients (kLa) of oxygen during sorption and desorption were analyzed using nanobubbles (NBs) of air and pure oxygen under various experimental conditions. The results showed that oxygen NBs achieved an increase in dissolved oxygen (DO) levels during absorption, reaching peaks of 30-34 mg center dot L-1 and stabilizing at 31.3 +/- 0.2 mg center dot L-1, with a volumetric mass transfer coefficient of 0.105 +/- 0.002 min-1. In comparison, air NBs showed a lower efficiency, with peak DOs of 8 center dot 10 mg center dot L-1 and kLa of 0.048 +/- 0.001 min-1. In desorption studies, oxygen NBs had higher DO retention, reducing from 30.0 mg center dot L-1 to 15.0 mg center dot L-1 in 300 min, with a kLa of 0.042 +/- 0.003 min-1, while air NBs decreased more rapidly, with a kLa of 0.028 +/- 0.002 min-1. When oxygen was used, kLa outperformed air in both absorption and desorption, with a higher kLa during absorption, a lower kLa during desorption, and higher stability. In addition, the results show that the residence time has an important impact on the performance of NBs, showing that the direct influence of the flow dynamics and surface/to/volume ratio influences the value of kLa. The results highlight the superior performance of oxygen NBs versus air NBs in terms of mass transfer efficiency and stability and highlight the effect of residence time and NB composition in applications requiring efficient oxygen transfer, given the promising prospects for the development of advanced aeration technologies in industrial and environmental contexts.

Systemic photobiomodulation: an integrative review of evidence for intravascular laser irradiation of blood and vascular photobiomodulation

Currently, clinical practice has demonstrated various applications for systemic laser photobiomodulation (PBM). In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been highlighted in the literature;however, they differ in their application methods, which can be intravenous, referred to as ILIB (intravascular laser irradiation of blood), or transdermally, recently termed VPBM (vascular photobiomodulation). This review aimed to compile all findings on these techniques and critically discuss their results. A search for articles was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to select descriptors with the boolean operators "AND/OR." After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 37 articles were selected. Of these, 19 studies discussed the use of systemic PBM with intravenous application, and 7 studies reported transcutaneous application. Regarding clinical studies, 28 studies addressed the application of the techniques in respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, and musculoskeletal conditions. For preclinical studies, 9 articles primarily discussed the application of systemic PBM in pulmonary and musculoskeletal conditions. Despite the promising results, methodological limitations, and variabilities in studies on systemic laser PBM prevent the categorical assertion of its efficacy. It is essential to conduct rigorous new studies to elucidate the mechanisms of action and determine the technique's efficacy.

Structural health monitoring is vital for the safety and longevity of infrastructure, particularly in seismic zones. This study focuses on identifying the dynamic properties of a reinforced concrete building in Chile's Valpara & iacute;so region. Using an experimental approach, the study compares ambient vibration records, seismic events (moment magnitude > 4), and data collected during adjacent construction activities. Force-balanced accelerometers were used for vibration measurements. The analysis employs the Stochastic Subspace Identification with Covariances (SSI-COV) method within an operational modal analysis framework to extract the building's modal parameters without requiring artificial excitations. This technique effectively identifies modal characteristics under different vibration sources, making it suitable for evaluating the structural condition under diverse loading conditions. The findings reveal the building's modes and frequencies, offering critical insights for maintenance and management of infrastructure. Little to no variations were observed in the identified frequencies of the building when working with different types of input data. These data support the integration of real-time IoT systems for continuous monitoring, providing a foundation for future digital twin applications. These advancements facilitate early deterioration detection, enhancing resilience in seismic environments.

Valorization of Biowastes Through Pre-composting Followed by Vermicomposting with the Addition of Effective Microorganisms

The growing production of biowaste like food waste, vegetable waste, and animal manure results from the increased global population and economic growth and the lack of effective public policies for adequate management that encourage more sustainable practices such as nutrient recycling. Although applied to only 2% of the municipal solid waste in Brazil, composting and vermicomposting are attractive, low-cost, and effective biological ways to stabilize several types of biowastes and increase the circular economy through organic compost. This study aimed to optimize the composting and vermicomposting process by adding effective microorganisms (EM) and evaluate the vermicompost performance in the production of vegetable seedlings. The pre-composting windrow was operated for 23 days. It was constructed with 120 kg of organic waste (58%, 31%, 9%, and 2% food waste (FW), cattle manure (CM), grass clippings (GC), and tree branches (TB), respectively). Six treatments were tested in the vermicomposting with different EM doses, consisting of a commercial compost (CC) and 0 (D0), 3 (D3), 4 (D4), 5 (D5), and 6 (D6) mL EM L-1 substrate. The pre-composting windrow balanced chemical parameters, with pH from initial biowastes going from 4.4-6.8 to 8.7 and C/N from 17-41/1 to 17/1 after 23 days. It also slightly reduced carbon and maintained nitrogen contents in the pile between 2.4 and 2.6% (dry matter). The addition of EM during the vermicomposting promoted nutrient concentration. The most effective EM dose was 3 mL EM Lsubstrate-1, which increased TKN by 10% and phosphorus by 96% when compared to the control. In addition to the highest nutrient contents, treatment D3 presented the Dickson quality index (DQI) 36% higher than the commercial control treatment, showing the potential to add EM to generate a higher maturity and agronomic relevance compost. The epidemiology of cervical cancer among indigenous women living in Latin America: A systematic review

Objective: To review the epidemiological evidence of cervical cancer among Indigenous women living in Latin America. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the evidence contained in 10 databases spanning 2003-2019. Two reviewers independently compared papers' titles and abstracts against the inclusionary criteria, and a third reviewer resolved discrepancies. Blinded reviewers performed the selection. The articles were organized into the following categories: rates, access, and screening;prevalence of precursor lesions;prevalence and genotypes of Human papillomavirus (HPV);and HPV coinfections. Results: Of the 874 manuscripts we reviewed, 25 were included in the final analysis. We found that cervical cancer is the leading cancer in terms of incidence and mortality among Indigenous women;it presents in advanced stages and is associated with poor survival rates. The prevalence of precursor lesions was higher in women who were geographically isolated. Screening appears to improve outcomes, but women may experience delays in their diagnosis and treatment. Some studies reported populations with a very high prevalence of highrisk Human papillomavirus (hrHPV), and the most frequent genotypes were not different from those of the general population. Chlamydia trachomatis was significantly associated with HPV infection. Conclusions: The data suggested a lack of indicators regarding cervical cancer and its precursor lesions, HPV infection, and cancer indicators. Health policies should target this vulnerable population.

Scientific evidence on the impact of endolaser in aesthetics: scoping review

The objective of this study was to comprehensively analyze the literature related to the use of endolaser in aesthetic procedures, with the aim of mapping and synthesizing the available evidence. We used the JBI methodology for scoping reviews, conducting direct searches in the PUBMED, Scielo, and Cochrane databases. Due to the limited number of publications in this area, studies with various designs were included, with no restrictions on database, year, or language of publication. The search strategy incorporated the use of Boolean operators to refine the results, employing "AND," "OR," and "NOT" with descriptors such as "endolaser," "endolift," "esthetics," and "treatment." The search was conducted between November 2023 and April 2024. Study selection followed an initial screening with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data synthesis provided a comprehensive overview of current trends and gaps identified in the literature. Two independent reviewers analyzed the included studies, totaling 26 publications categorized as follows: randomized controlled trial (1), case series (23), case study (1), and pilot study (1). The results highlighted considerable variability in treatment protocols. Positive effects observed included localized fat reduction, skin rejuvenation, and reduction in the appearance of acne scars, keloids, and progressive lipodystrophy. The findings underscore the need for additional research to establish standardized protocols, better understand the underlying mechanisms, and evaluate the long-term sustainability of results. This gap in the literature presents an opportunity for further in-depth investigations in the field of endolaser aesthetics.

Automated monitoring of insulation by ultraviolet imaging employing deep learning

The corona effect on the surface of electrical system equipment and components generally indicates undesirable phenomena that can lead to physical degradation of materials or even equipment failure. One of the most promising techniques for monitoring corona discharges is the use of specialized cameras for the detection of ultraviolet radiation. This paper introduces an innovative algorithm for classifying the criticality of insulation based on attributes extracted from videos recorded using an ultraviolet detection camera. The attributes extracted from each facula origin include maximum persistence, area, and the minimum distance between the facula origin and the insulation. To obtain this distance, a technique combining a deep convolutional neural network model with an adaptive segmentation thresholding method is proposed. To validate the proposed methodology, inspections were conducted at a 500 kV substation. A total of 96 videos were recorded, within which 99 facula origins were identified. The object detection model applied demonstrated an accuracy of 85.5% in detecting insulation in images, based on a validation set comprising 1,985 images and 8,730 instances. The results of the classification showed that 72.7 % of the facula origins recorded originated from regions far from the insulation (mainly cables and corona rings). These results demonstrate that the distance between the insulation and the facula origin is an essential attribute for video analysis, providing context for recorded discharges and allowing differentiation between cases where ultraviolet radiation originates from insulation and those where discharge location is less critical.

Fruit sorting and quality inspection using computer vision is a key tool to ensure quality and safety in the fruit industry. This study presents a systematic literature review, following the PRISMA methodology, with the aim of identifying different fields of application, typical hardware configurations, and the techniques and algorithms used for fruit sorting. In this study, 56 articles published between 2015 and 2024 were analyzed, selected from relevant databases such as Web of Science and Scopus. The results indicate that the main fields of application include orchards, industrial processing lines, and final consumption points, such as supermarkets and homes, each with specific technical requirements. Regarding hardware, RGB cameras and LED lighting systems predominate in controlled applications, although multispectral cameras are also important in complex applications such as foreign material detection. Processing techniques include traditional algorithms such as Otsu and Sobel for segmentation and deep learning models such as ResNet and VGG, often optimized with transfer learning for classification. This systematic review could provide a basic guide for the development of fruit quality inspection and classification systems in different environments.
