Seismic Performance Assessment of a Novel 2-D Base Isolation Device for Protecting Statues via Shaking Table Tests. The Case Study of the Statue of Goddess of Morgantina

Recent seismic events in the Mediterranean have highlighted the vulnerability of historical monuments and museum artefacts to earthquakes. Although efforts have been made to protect buildings, attention to safeguarding artefacts within these structures has often been overlooked. Research on their protection mainly relies on analytical studies and small-scale models, with limited application in testing full-scale scenarios. The objective of this study is to assess the seismic performance of a novel 2-D base isolation device designed to protect museum artefacts, particularly statues. The device consists of a series of articulated quadrilateral mechanisms called Kinematic Steel Joint (KSJ), which enable a rigid base to move independently in both horizontal directions and exhibit pendulum-like behavior with the ability to re-center itself. The KSJ isolator has been extensively tested on a full-scale model using shaking tables of the L.E.D.A. Research Institute at the kore university of enna, Italy. To characterize it dynamically, the model has been subjected to random noises and earthquakes under various conditions and payload intensities. Subsequently, shake table tests have been conducted using a full-scale replica of the 2.24 meter high statue of the Goddess of Morgantina to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed seismic isolator in protecting statues during earthquakes.

Costs and benefits of item reduction: The abridgment of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ)

Shortening existing instruments is a highly required procedure, as short scales may have several advantages over the long versions, especially in time and/or resources restrictions. However, abbreviated forms may be weaker than their parent versions from both content coverage and psychometric robustness. Also, the abridgment of instruments is often lacking in methodological strictness, and the potential drawbacks of the shortened scales are rarely reported. The current study aims to describe the whole process of scale shortening, emphasizing the potential costs and benefits, in terms of balance between time-resource savings and loss of validity and reliability. We shortened the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), involving a sample of 459 participants (53.2% males). Item reduction was driven by searching to preserve the content breadth of the construct and scale's psychometric quality. Our results supported the two-factor structure of the measure (Cognitive Reappraisal and Expressive Suppression), chi(2)(8) = 11.357 ns, CFI = 0.995, TLI = 0.990, RMSEA = 0.030 (0.000-0.067), SRMR = 0.031, and three items were selected for each subscale. The two intended factors showed good levels of reliability (alpha > 0.710). A latent variable model was performed to evaluate how the original ERQ and our proposed short version (ERQ-S) were related to depression, anxiety, and stress: A similar pattern of associations was found, with Cognitive Reappraisal (negatively) and Expressive Suppression (positively) reporting significant but weak associations. The ERQ-S can be beneficial over the original version, as it effectively assesses the two emotion regulation strategies with a trivial loss in reliability and predictive validity.

Lattice structures are defined by the organised repetition of a unit cell. These complex designs are widely used in engineering due to their lightweight nature and tailored mechanical properties. This study presents a novel 1D numerical method for modelling the standard Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) unit cell, a commonly used lattice structure geometry due to its geometry simplicity. Mechanical analyses were carried out using Ansys 2023 R2. A customised ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) routine was developed to assign specific area and inertia properties to each beam element, independent from the nominal value of the strut diameter. The equivalent engineering constants were evaluated through uniaxial compression and in-plane shear tests. A neural network optimisation technique was then employed to optimise the 1D model's parameters and improve its accuracy. The neural network was trained using high-fidelity 3D FEM results as the reference data, enabling the identification of the most suitable parametric values for various strut diameters. The proposed 1D method aims to address the computational complexity associated with traditional 3D FEM analyses while maintaining accurate predictions of the mechanical response. By representing the lattice struts as beam elements in the 1D model, the computational cost can be significantly reduced, making it more feasible to analyse large-scale lattice structures or perform extensive parametric studies involving different design configurations and loading scenarios. This formulation has been tested by comparing numerical results coming from standard 3D and 1D elements on a variable span 3-point bending test. The accuracy of results and time-saving demonstrate the validity of the proposed procedure.

Performance of Emitters in Drip Irrigation Systems Using Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis

Flat drippers are widely used in agricultural irrigation systems to ensure precise water distribution. This study investigates the optimization of flat drippers through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFDs) simulations, focusing on the channel geometry. These emitters have a particular configuration of the labyrinth channel appropriately shaped to ensure high turbulence and dissipation of the hydraulic load. CFDs techniques are particularly suitable to investigate the labyrinth design and optimization. Here, by analyzing seven different dripper models with varying dissipation channel sizes, the relationship between flow rate (liters per hour) and pipe pressure (kPa) was studied. Simulations were performed for six inlet pressures in the range between 50 and 175 kPa, with steps of 25 kPa, allowing for the derivation of the pressure-flow curve and the optimization of the emitter exponent. The value of the exponent is closely linked to the conformation of the channel and is standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9261:2004. Additionally, the influence of the labyrinth channel's cross-sectional area on flow rate was examined, providing insights into design improvements for enhanced hydraulic performance. The proposed optimization could lead to significant water savings and enhanced agricultural productivity by improving the efficiency of irrigation systems.

In the period from the II World War to the mid-1980s, Italy witnessed growing attention towards the industrialization of the construction sector with different territorial specificities. The paper analyses some 70s and 80s public housing districts in Palermo, retracing the history of industrialization in Sicily. The contribution of prof. Benedetto Colajanni and his disciples studying the typological, structural and figurative aspects of these buildings, is highlighted. These are mainly systems for the industrialization of concrete casting with couffrage-tunnels or banches et tables developed in Sicily, thanks to the design contest and the activities carried out by the building cooperatives adhering to the Ravennate Consortium which, at the end of the 1960s, had acquired the patents and machinery for the industrialization of concrete casting of load-bearing structures. The first example of the application of industrialization in Palermo was the Sperone district, a testing ground for both the companies and the design group, headed by Benedetto Colajanni. It was necessary to wait about a decade, with the PEEP districts and the law 25/80, to test the completion on site with modular and standardized elements, both for the closures of the facades and the internal partitions. The paper provides a contribution to the knowledge of a specific construction typology that has characterized a wide range of residential buildings both in Palermo and in the rest of Italy and which requires maintenance and recovery interventions that can guarantee the performance standards required by current regulations, maintaining the original identity.

A refined aeroelastic beam finite element for the stability analysis of flexible subsonic wings

In this work, a novel finite element approach for the computational aeroelastic analysis of flexible lifting structures in subsonic flow is presented. The numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction relies on the physical concept and mathematical formulation of an aeroelastic beam element, that is based on Euler-Bernoulli and De Saint-Venant theories for the structure dynamics and modified strip theory for the unsteady airload. An implementation of the unsteady vortex lattice method is used to correct standard strip theory in the time domain, considering the actual wing geometry and taking the aerodynamic effects of its sweep, aspect ratio and taper ratio into account. The effects of shed and trailed vorticity on the sectional load development and distribution are also accounted for, within a hybrid semi-analytical reduced-order aerodynamic model. Building on previous works, the present computational framework for aeroelastic modelling and simulations of flexible lifting structures is investigated and validated through a parametric stability assessment of swept tapered wings. The aeroelastic beam element proves to be an intuitive, reliable and efficient reduced-order tool, well suited for the preliminary multidisciplinary design and optimisation of flexible aircraft.

Durability and performance of sustainable composite films from aliphatic-aromatic polyester with biomass-derived carbon-based filler particles

Additives are known to improve the properties of biopolymers, but most additives have environmental or performance concerns that limit their use. In this context, the recovery and use of bio-waste and biomass for the formulation of sustainable bio-composites is a challenging issue for the transition from a linear to a more sustainable circular economy. Recently, the replacement of carbon-based fillers in polymers and biopolymers with biochar particles derived from thermochemical treatments of biomass waste has attracted increasing attention for its potentially critical *** this work, sustainable bio-composites based on biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), PBAT, and biochar, produced by controlled thermochemical treatments of biomass waste, were prepared by melt blending and their durability and performance were investigated in detail. Firstly, carob waste, after syrup extraction, was subjected to dry and wet thermochemical processes, i.e. slow pyrolysis at 280, 340 and 400 degrees C and hydrothermal carbonisation at 220, 250 and 280 degrees C, to obtain slow pyrolyzed biochar (SP-BC) and hydrothermal carbonised biochar (HTC-BC) particles. The SP-BC and HTC-BC, i.e. the solid phases resulting from the thermochemical processes, were characterised by elemental analysis and spectroscopy to study their physicochemical properties and by microscopy to analyse their morphology. Pure PBAT, PBAT/SP-BC and PBAT/HTC-BC bio-composites containing 10 % by weight of SP-BC and HTC-BC respectively were characterised by thermal, morphological, rheological and mechanical analyses. The results indicate that both types of particles exerted a reinforcing effect on PBAT and the resulting bio-composites were more thermo-mechanically stable compared to pure PBAT. The monocyte/HDLc ratio and LDLc are two independent predictors of the response of Graves' ophthalmopathy patients to parenteral glucocorticoids

PurposeGraves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is an inflammatory-autoimmune disease and parenteral glucocorticoids (IvGCs) are the first-line therapy in the moderate to severe forms. Oxidative stress (OX) and cholesterol have been related to severe forms and to the clinical outcome of GO. Recently some new biomarkers have been proposed as predictors of the clinical outcome in some cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. We hypothesized that the monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) ratio (MHR) could be a useful biomarker in GO management and aimed to evaluate the possible role of the MHR as a predictor of the clinical outcome in patients with active, moderate to severe GO treated with *** retrospectively studied 115 patients, 86 females and 29 males, with active, moderate to severe GO who were treated with IvGCs for 12 weeks at our institution. GO severity was evaluated according to EUGOGO suggestions, GO clinical activity and the clinical outcome of GO to IvGCs were evaluated by the seven-point Clinical Activity Score (CAS).ResultsThe baseline low density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDLc) and MHR were negatively and independently related to the improvement of GO at 12 weeks (p = 0.024 and p = 0.012, respectively). The value of the MHR = 0.0095 was identified as the best cut off by ROC curve and appeared to be a potentially useful tool to help identify patients with a poor response to *** MHR might be an useful tool to manage the immunosuppressant therapy in GO patients;our study confirms the role of LDLc as a predictor of GO outcome after IvGCs treatment.

Challenging the impostor: a scoping review of the pharmacological management of Capgras syndrome in Parkinson's disease and Lewy bodies dementia

IntroductionCapgras syndrome (CS) is a delusional misidentification phenomenon increasingly reported in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). Aim of the present scoping review was to provide an overview on current evidence on the pharmacological treatment of CS in PD and LBD, identifying knowledge gaps in the *** following databases were consulted: PubMed, Google Scholar, the Cochrane Database and Web of *** search query covered a time period from 1976 until 2022. Fourteen studies on PD (11 single case reports, 3 case series) and five on LBD (all single case reports) met the inclusion criteria. Most PD patients with CS had cognitive decline and visual hallucinations, and were managed by reducing dopaminergic therapy and prescribing neuroleptics (quetiapine, clozapine or pimavanserin), which often resulted in improvement. Neuroleptics have also been used in LBD, but with variable *** neuroleptics and dopaminergic dose adjustments appear to be beneficial for CS in PD and LBD, robust evidence is lacking. Future prospective studies are essential to establish evidence-based guidelines for this challenging syndrome.

The Development of a Short Version of the Internet Addiction Test: The IAT-7

Using a valid and reliable scale to measure problems associated with excessive internet use is a key element of research on internet addiction (IA). The main goal of the current study was to develop a brief version of the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the most widely used measure for assessing IA. In Study 1 (N = 463), we combined strict analytic techniques for item reduction with an evaluation of item content, and we compared several CFA and ESEM Models. In Study 2 (N = 374), we applied a Latent Variable Model (LMV) to examine the associations between our proposed short scale and some related variables. Our findings suggested a 7-item version (named IAT-7), with an ESEM structure and two domain-specific factors (F1: Interpersonal, Emotional and Obsessive Conflict;F2: Online Time Management). The IAT-7 showed excellent fit-indices [chi(2) = 13.373;df = 8;CFI = .994;TLI = .983;RMSEA = .030 (.000-.073);SRMR = .016;AIC = 9,276.944;BIC = 9,388.662;aBIC = 9,302.971] and an adequate level of internal consistency (alpha and omega > .752). Interpersonal, Emotional and Obsessive Conflict mainly predicted loneliness and depression, whereas Online Time Management was primarily associated with stress, followed by depression. The IAT-7 shows promising psychometric properties and could be used as a screening tool for evaluating IA. Its small number of items makes it more attractive when a large battery of assessment scales is used.
