Evaluation of In Vitro and In Vivo Pharmacological Activity of Elatostema sessile With In Silico Approaches

Elatostema sessile is used by traditional medicinal practitioners to treat various diseases. The methanol extract (MES) and its fractions, including petroleum ether (PES), carbon tetrachloride (TES), chloroform (CES), and aqueous soluble fractions (AES), were tested for their antioxidant, cytotoxic, analgesic, and sedative properties on Swiss albino mice. In addition, we used GCMS to determine the bioactive compounds present in the MES of E. sessile. The MES had the lowest IC50 value (24.95 mu g/mL) for antioxidant activity, measured by DPPH free radical scavenging, whereas the IC50 value for ascorbic acid was 5.80 mu g/mL. In cytotoxic test with brine shrimp, PES exhibited the lowest LC50 value of 6.10 mu g/mL among all the extract. Using the formalin-induced paw licking method, MES and PES showed substantial results (p < 0.001) at 400 mg/kg dose. The tail immersion test showed significant (p < 0.05) findings for MES, PES, and TES after 30, 60, and 90 min following 400 mg/kg dose administration. The hole-cross test demonstrated highly statistically significant results (p < 0.001) for the sedative activity of PES at a dose of 400 mg/kg after 30 min of administration and for CES after 90 min. According to molecular docking investigations, the extract has the potential to function as a pain-relieving drug by inhibiting the enzymatic activity of cyclooxygenases 1 and 2. In summary, the results indicate that E. sessile offers significant therapeutic promise in the creation of innovative therapies for cancer, pain, and sleep problems.

The utilization of composite materials has experienced a notable rise in recent years due to their advantageous combination of lightweight properties, exceptional strength, and high stiffness. But this type of materials when used to build complex structure can encounter mechanical and thermal damage in a form of microcrack which later causes the failure of materials if repair is impossible. Hence, self-healing of those materials can solve the problem along with minimizing the maintenance cost and keeping the structure safe and sound. The purpose of this state-of-the-art review is to investigate the advancements of microcapsule-based self-healing composite materials. The present study provides a comprehensive discussion on various types of self-healing systems based on microcapsules. These systems include the Dual/multi-microcapsules system, Microcapsules-latent curing agent system, Microcapsule-catalyst System. Each system is examined in detail to understand its unique characteristics and potential applications in self-healing materials. This paper aims to analyze various factors that contribute to the process of microencapsulation, as well as their impact on healing efficiency and thermal stability. The discussion focuses on the broad application of microcapsule-based self-healing composites in various fields.

Mitigation of environmental impacts and challenges during hydrogen production

This paper presents hydrogen production methodologies, their impacts on the environment, and mitigation. Three different types of production procedures, namely fossil fuel-based, renewable energy-based, and biological, are presented along with their key technological characteristics and environmental feasibility. The effects of greenhouse gas emissions from its production on different natural cycles are carried out to show the environmental impact. Different production methods, problem identification, and mitigation of environmental impacts are separately pointed out. Analyses are shown for available methods in terms of their production cost, efficiency, maturity level, advantages, problems, and solutions. A comparative analysis is carried out along with different existing methods to find a suitable H2 production method. Finally, the transition pathway from fossil fuel to biohydrogen production is intended to promote biohydrogen for transportation and industrial applications. It demonstrates the possibility and potentiality of biohydrogen production for a sustainable future.

Effect of gamma and neutron irradiations on the physical, magnetic and electrical properties of Ni-Cu-Cd nano-ferrites

The physical, magnetic and electrical properties variations for the sol-gel auto combustion synthesized Ni0.3Cu0.2Cd0.5Fe2O4 by gamma (gamma) and neutron irradiations dose applications are studied in this research. The irradiation have been done through 2.0 x 1011 and 1.9 x 1012 cm- 2s-1 per min fast neutron flux and gamma rays from the research reactor of TRIGA MARK-II and 64 KCi cylindrical 60Co source respectively within room temperature. The rate of 1 Mrad and 3 Mrad dose is 1.067 Mrad/h. XRD results show greater intensities for the irradiation doses. Due to the redistribution of ions, changes in the lattice constant have been found by the irradiation through the results of XRD and Rietveld Refinement process. The saturated magnetization obtained from the VSM is found to decrease first by the irradiation and then increase drastically. This analysis is performed by the popular pulse field technique of hysteresis loop for nano ferrites and further analyzed by LAS. The frequency dependent characteristics such as dielectric constant, electric modulus, impedance analysis and ac conductivity are inspected for all samples with both types of irradiation process. The electrical modulus Cole-Cole plots insure the dominant property as electric stiffness for investigated ferrties. Extreme decrease has been found in the dielectric natures which also show good agreement in the higher ac conductivity nature at the higher frequencies. Electrical parametric dependent overlapping two semicircles which are not complete have been found in the plots of Cole-Cole for impedance data. The energy of activation for the process of diffusion decreases by the irradiation.

For the first time, first-principles investigations using density functional theory (DFT) were thoroughly conducted on the structural, mechanical, optical, anisotropic, thermodynamic and electronic properties of TlCrX2 (X = S, Se) materials. The mechanical stability of both compounds is confirmed as their elastic constants satisfy the Born criteria. The bulk modulus, Poisson's ratio and shear modulus have been utilized to investigate the mechanical stability of this compound. The comparisons of the elastic moduli show a significant correlation with previously obtained experimental data. Notably, TlCrSe2 transitions from brittle to ductile when Se is substituted with S, improving its machinability for industrial uses. TlCrSe2 is characterized by its softness, ductility, high machinability, and exceptional dry lubricity. Additionally, these materials display anisotropy. The melting temperature, phonon thermal conductivity, and Debye temperature of TlCrX2 (X = S, Se) are low, while the compound shows a moderate Gr & uuml;neisen parameter. TlCrX2 compounds exhibit moderate Debye temperatures, low melting points, and Gr & uuml;neisen parameters, indicating their potential use in thermal barrier coatings. In addition, an in-depth optical evaluation reveals that these compounds hold promise for use in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Both materials exhibit a high refractive index at low energy levels, including the visible spectrum, and uniform reflectivity across a wide range of photon energies. TlCrX2 (X = S, Se) exhibit high UV absorption, making them excellent candidates for UV-related applications, such as surgical equipment disinfection, photovoltaic materials for X-ray phosphors, space technology and solid-state LED lighting. Their high reflectivity in the visible range suggests potential as efficient solar reflectors to minimize solar heating, while low reflectivity at higher energies (above 15 eV) and a high refractive index at low photon energies highlight

The presence of heavy metal contaminants in fish and shellfish in aquatic environments poses a risk to human health due to trophic transfer. This study determined the levels of various trace elements (Fe, As, Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cd) in the muscles, gills, and liver of hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) and prawn (Macrobrachiumrosenbergii) samples obtained from the Tetulia River, Bangladesh. The results showed that the level of trace elements in different body parts differed significantly (P < 0.05) between species, displayed below recommended threshold levels. The cumulative low to higher hierarchic concentration of the trace elements was as follows: Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > As > Cd. Hilsa had significantly (P < 0.05) higher bioaccumulated trace elements compared to prawn. With the exception of Ni and Cd, the estimated daily intakes (EDI) for both adults and children were below the recommended daily allowance (RDA), which exhibits that other trace elements do not cause harm to human health. Furthermore, the hazard index (HI) and total hazard quotient (THQ) were also found to be within acceptable limits, taking into account the higher vulnerability of children to toxicity compared to adults. Notably, the HI suggested that children were approximately four times more susceptible to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects compared to adults. Ultimately, the levels of carcinogenic risk were deemed acceptable, despite the estimated values suggesting susceptibility to adverse effects in both adults and children. This study concluded that fish and shellfish may not pose a health risk to consumers, highlighting the importance of further monitoring of trace elements in the catchment area.

A FixMatch Framework for Alzheimer's Disease Classification: Exploring the Trade-Off Between Supervision and Performance

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) poses a major challenge for healthcare systems worldwide, as timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial for patient management and outcome improvement. While experienced medical professionals can often identify AD through conventional assessment methods, limited resources and growing patient populations make large-scale and rapid screening increasingly necessary. In this work, we explore whether the FixMatch algorithm-a semi-supervised learning approach-can aid in classifying Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Cognitively Normal (CN) by using the ADNI fMRI dataset of 5,182 images. This approach supplements rather than replaces clinical expertise, offering a faster, more standardized classification process where expert labeling is limited. We first assessed various supervised models and determined that VGG19-FFT provided the strongest balance of classification accuracy and computational efficiency. Integrating VGG19-FFT into FixMatch as the teacher model, initial tests using 10% labeled and 90% unlabeled data yielded modest results. A more systematic examination of different labeled-to-unlabeled data splits revealed that a 60:40 ratio enabled FixMatch to achieve classification accuracies of 100% for AD, 99% for CN, and 99% for MCI-on par with fully supervised training. This outcome highlights the potential of FixMatch to significantly reduce labeling requirements, a particular advantage in resource-constrained settings where expert annotations are costly. By striking an effective balance between labeling effort and model performance, the identified 60:40 ratio helps make advanced diagnostic methods both feasible and practical in real-world clinical applications.

Use of CPT and other parameters for estimating soil unit weight using optimised machine learning models

Accurate prediction of soil unit weight is crucial for geotechnical engineering and soil characterization. This study leverages five advanced machine learning algorithms-Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Regression (SVR), XGBoost, and AdaBoost with RF as a weak learner-to predict soil unit weight. Hyperparameters are optimized using randomized search cross-validation (RSCV), and model performance is evaluated using mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and R-2 metrics. The input features include soil depth (D), moisture content (MC), fine content (FC), cone tip resistance (QC), and cone local resistance (FS). An autoencoder-based feature augmentation technique is applied to enhance model performance. Before augmentation, AdaBoost with RF achieves the best performance (R-2 = 0.896), while SVR performs the worst (R-2 = 0.740). Post-augmentation, all models improve, with AdaBoost showing the highest R-2 and SVR achieving significant gains (R-2 = 0.782). SHAP analysis identifies D as the most critical feature, while QC and FS negatively impact accuracy. The results highlight AdaBoost with RF as the most effective algorithm for predicting soil unit weight, underscoring the value of feature augmentation in capturing complex patterns.

In the constantly growing field of environmental sustainability, the threat of newly discovered pollutants, particularly antibiotics, has become a crucial concern. The widespread presence of these pharmaceutical substances in water sources presents a complex hazard to human health and ecological balance, requiring immediate and novel intervention techniques. Regarding this, semiconductor-based photocatalysts have appeared as promising candidates, providing a sustainable and efficient way to remove antibiotics from aquatic ecosystems. Nanomaterials can effectively and precisely break down and neutralize antibiotic compounds with high efficiency and selectivity by utilizing a complex interaction between radical reactive oxygen species and non-radical equivalents under light irradiation. Although photocatalysts have certain drawbacks, such as a limited capacity to absorb light and concerns about catalytic stability, photocatalysis outperforms other advanced oxidation processes in multiple aspects. This study focuses on summarizing recent advances in the sustainable removal of antibiotics using semiconductor-based photocatalysts. By reviewing the latest studies and sustainable technologies, this study presents new insights into the complex relationship between contaminants and catalytic degradation processes. Compared to single and binary photocatalysts, modified ternary composites were found to have superior photodegradation performance under visible light exposure. To be specific g-C3N4-based ternary photocatalysts exhibited more than 90% degradation of tetracycline and sulfamethazine antibiotics within one hour of irradiation. This study addresses the antibiotic degradation efficiency during photocatalytic processes and suggests new approaches to improve the performance and scalability for wider use in real-world situations.

Curie Temperature Variation in Rare Earth Doped Spinel Ferrites: A Review

Curie temperature (TC) is a fundamental topic in magnetism that explains the temperature at which a ferromagnetic material loses its permanent magnetization. This temperature depends on the material's atomic and magnetic structure and is important for an extensive array of applications, from industrial use to the natural world. In recent years, researchers have increasingly used rare earth elements (RE) as doping ions in spinel ferrite to change their structural, magnetic, and other properties. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the variation of TC in rare earth-doped spinel ferrites. This review summarizes the variation of TC and tries to provide a general trend for RE-doped spinel ferrites. To provide an overview of the subject matter, a tabular analysis highlights the chemical composition, concentration of RE, sample preparation method, sintering temperature, and Curie temperature of the ferrites. We have also included some graphs to clarify the variation of TC with RE content. Our analysis demonstrated that the increment of RE ratio in a spinel ferrite led to a corresponding decrease in the Curie temperature. This review will become a valuable resource for researchers to get a basic idea about the variation of TC in RE-doped spinel ferrites.
