Kinematic and sensory-motor analysis of the effects of treatments with photobiomodulation in rats with experimentally induced spinal injury

The aim of this study was to evaluate the kinematic and sensorimotor parameters after application of photobiomodulation (PBM) in rats with experimentally induced spinal cord injuries (SCI). The animals were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups containing 5 animals each and respecting the following arrangement: C (control, simulation of surgical procedures);I (injury, induction of SCI) and PBM (photobiomodulation, SCI + application of photobiomodulation therapy). All animals underwent movement tests after 3, 7, 10 and 14 days, respectively, after the surgical procedure, and the following movement parameters were evaluated: mean velocity (MV), ground reaction force (GRF) and sciatic functional index (SFI) using integrated equipment capable of digitally collecting the proposed data. The mean results of the MV data obtained by groups C, I and PBM were compared and a statistically significant difference was found, being: C x I (p = 0.001) and I x PBM (p = 0.002), respectively. Considering the SFI data obtained by groups C, I and PBM, a statistically significant difference was observed when comparing C x I (p = 0.011). The mean results of the GRF data obtained by groups C, I and PBM were compared and the results showed a statistically significant difference in C x I (p = 0.001), C x PBM (p = 0.026) and I x PBM (p = 0.002), respectively. Therefore, there was an improvement in motor function between the 7th and 14th day after SCI, represented by the increase in speed and better GRF distribution in the PBM group.

Influence of Climate and Solar Variability on Growth Rings of Araucaria angustifolia in Três Barras National Forest (Brazil)

This research applies continuous wavelet analysis and seasonal correlation analysis to tree-ring data from Tr & ecirc;s Barras National Forest (FLONA Tr & ecirc;s Barras), revealing diverse influences on growth, including climate, solar activity, and external factors. The methodology involved tree-ring collection and subsequent wavelet and seasonal analyses to unveil the non-stationary characteristics of and multifaceted influences on growth. Key findings include the subtle effects of El Ni & ntilde;o events on tree-ring development, the sensitivity of Araucaria angustifolia to temperature changes, the significant influence of precipitation during drought periods, and the intricate relationship between tree growth and solar cycles. The El Ni & ntilde;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) emerges as a primary climatic driver during specific intervals, with external factors (precipitation, temperature, and solar cycle-solar irradiance) influencing tree response between 1936 and 1989. Additionally, the seasonal correlation analysis highlighted the importance of sub-annual climate variability, capturing specific intervals, such as a 3-month season ending in March of the previous year, that significantly impacted tree-ring growth. The study underscores the importance of protecting the endangered Araucaria angustifolia for climatic studies and local communities. Historically, in Brazil, Araucaria angustifolia seeds played a vital role in sustaining indigenous populations, which in turn helped to disperse and propagate forests, creating anthropogenic landscapes that highlight the interconnected relationship between humans and the preservation of these forests.

Curcumin-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for photodynamic therapy of breast cancer

Breast cancer is the deadliest cancer among women and its treatment using traditional methods leads the patient to experience adverse effects. However, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive therapy modality that works through a photosensitizing agent, which treating activated by a suitable light source, releases reactive oxygen species capable of treating cancer. Furthermore, recent research indicates that combining PDT and nanoparticles can enhance therapeutic effects. In this way, the synthesis of IONPs (iron oxide nanoparticles) was carried out, and their subsequent coating was done with curcumin (IONPs@curcumin) so that they could act as therapeutic agents against breast cancer. Curcumin solubility tests were carried out to achieve the best results, with ethanol as a solvent, in different concentrations of ethanolic curcumin solution, with the optimal outcome observed at a concentration of 1 mM. Subsequently, the stability analysis was conducted by adjusting the pH of the medium, revealing that at pH 10, the IONPs@curcumin exhibited the best stability and dispersion conditions. Then, cytotoxicity tests of IONPs@curcumin were carried out on the MDA-MB-468 triple-negative breast cancer cell line, under experimental conditions without irradiation and subjected to PDT. The results revealed a viability greater than 70%, as it did not exhibit cytotoxicity for cells in the dark. After 1 h of incubation, the PDT associated with IONPs@curcumin showed 32% of cell viability at a concentration of 30 mg/mL.

Acinetobacter baumannii stands out for its antimicrobial resistance and high capacity to cause hospital infections, posing a severe threat to global public health. Thus, there is an urgent need for new therapeutic strategies. This work applied photodynamic therapy (PDT) with curcumin to Acinetobacter baumannii, and bacterial cell viability was assessed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to study changes in biomolecules after PDT application, comparing them with control groups that were only irradiated and only with curcumin photosensitizer. According to the results, there was an increase in the total amount of lipids ( 0.3 %), total proteins ( 0.6 %), and nuclear material ( 8.6 %), with a decrease in carbohydrates ( 3.0 %) after the application of PDT, compared to the control group. In the secondary structure of the proteins, a reduction in alpha-helix ( 3.0 %), disordered structure ( 7.0 %), and turns ( 5.0 %) was observed, with an increase in beta-sheets ( 8.8 %). The analysis of biomolecular changes by FT-IR after the application of PDT can contribute to understanding the mechanisms of action of cell death, enabling therapeutic strategies to improve diagnosis and clinical treatment.

Navigating legitimacy: diverse stakeholder perspectives on the IFRS foundation's establishment of the ISSB

PurposeIn 2020, the IFRS Foundation's public consultation on Sustainability Reporting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to share their opinions on the Foundation's proposals. This paper aims to analyze the comment letters that would legitimize the IFRS Foundation to institutionalize the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB).Design/methodology/approachThis study used Python to develop a model for analyzing all 577 submissions that the IFRS Foundation received, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis *** for the creation of the ISSB was not unanimous but reached 68%. Key supporting arguments were that the IFRS Foundation could harmonize sustainability reporting standards by leveraging its expertise in setting accounting standards, and use its existing relationships to enforce sustainability reporting. Key counterarguments were: the IFRS Foundation lacks expertise in the areas of sustainability and climate;sustainability reporting should be integrated into financial reporting rather than being disclosed separately;the proposals were limited in scope (single materiality, focus on investors' information needs and climate change centrism);and the IFRS Foundation should aim to endorse already established frameworks *** implicationsA consensus between supporters and critics was the need to make sustainability reporting mandatory. Endorsed by IOSCO, the ISSB released its inaugural standards, focusing on climate-related disclosures, effective from 2024 in jurisdictions that choose to adopt ***/valueThe findings show that the establishment of the ISSB by the IFRS Foundation only partially fulfilled the demand for the harmonization of sustainability reporting standards. As a result, broader and non-investor-centric sustainability information may continue to be reported under alternative frameworks.

Global ionospheric response to a G2 and a G3 geomagnetic storms of November 4 and 5 2023

Two successive geomagnetic storms of G2 and G3 intensities were observed on November 4, 2023, and November 5, 2023. The results presented in this study investigated the impacts of two geomagnetic storms during the main phases at equatorial, low-latitude, and EIA and beyond over west/east American, west/east African/European, and west/east Asian longitudinal sectors. This study was carried out using 30 GPS receivers, 30 magnetometers, and three ionosondes (East Brazilian sector). Positive storm effects were observed during the main phases of both the G2 (storm1) and G3 (storm2) storms, however the magnitude of the positive storm effects was greater during the G3 main phase than during the G2 main phase. The American sectors recorded the highest VTEC variations. Negative storm effects were mostly observed over the Asian sectors. Minimal changes in VTEC were observed in the Asian sectors during both main phases, except over DAEJ. The American sectors exhibited the strongest positive storm responses, followed by the African and Asian sectors, with VTEC enhancements being more pronounced during the G3 storm's main phase compared G2 storm. Positive ionospheric effects extended to higher latitudes during the main phase of G3 storm especially in the American sectors, likely due to eastward prompt penetration electric fields (PPEF) uplifting the F-region to altitudes where lower recombination rates lead to VTEC enhancement. This PPEF effect varied with longitude and storm intensity, resulting in significant positive ionospheric responses in the American sector, particularly during the G3 storm. Variations in the thermospheric O/N2 ratio further influenced the VTEC changes across all sectors. The EIA exhibited notable disturbances, particularly in the American sector. By contrast, EIA crest features were less distinct in the African sector, highlighting the longitudinal dependencies of PPEF effects on the EIA structure. In space, nitrogen-rich ice is constantly exposed to ionizing radiation, which triggers chemical reactions and desorption processes allowing a chemical enhancement of interstellar medium (ISM). Here, we present the first part of a series of studies on the effect of cosmic ray bombardment (40 MeV Ni11+ ions) on H2O:N-2 (1:5) ice at 15 K, employing the PROCODA code as the modelling tool including 28 chemical species and 930 chemical coupled equations (also including desorption). This first part focuses on the reaction rates and chemical equilibrium stage due to radiation processing. Among the results, we characterize the molecular abundances at chemical equilibrium, including experimentally observed and non-observed species (predicted) suggesting some candidates as a target for astronomical observation. The best-fitting models provided the effective rate coefficients, which can be employed in astrochemical models to understand the chemistry of cold space environments. The findings also help to clarify the chemical processes of N-bearing species in the ISM and frozen surfaces of the Solar system, including the moon of giant planets, outer solar system objects, and ices in the interstellar and protostellar medium.

The aim was to evaluate the fermentative dynamics and nutritional characteristics of mixed maize silages with and without commercially viable cobs associated with butterfly pea hay. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme, with 4 replications, which corresponded to the maize cobs factor and the butterfly pea hay factor (inclusion of 30% of butterfly pea hay during the ensiling process and without the inclusion of butterfly pea hay). The inclusion of butterfly pea hay increased the dry matter contents, reduced the silage density and its interaction with the absence of viable cobs promoted less losses and greater dry matter recovery (P < 0.05). The lowest value of butyric acid was found in the interaction of silage without viable cobs and butterfly pea hay (P < 0.05). The inclusion of butterfly pea hay reduced fiber contents and increased protein contents (P < 0.05). The inclusion of 30% butterfly pea hay promotes better values of organic acids, nutritional components and lower fermentation losses when the maize is ensiled without cobs that are viable for commerce.

BackgroundCompliance with the WHO 24-Hour Movement Guidelines (i.e., physical activity, screen time and sleep duration) has been reported in studies comprising children in the early years. Despite the importance of these behaviours for healthy development, there is limited data on the proportion of toddlers who meet these recommendations. This study reported the compliance with the 24-h movement behaviours guidelines among low-income Brazilian *** activity (PA) was objectively measured using Actigraph wGT3X accelerometer in 144 toddlers (73 girls;12-35 months of age). Sleep duration and screen time were parent-reported. Descriptive analyses were performed, and toddlers were classified as compliant/noncompliant with the 24-h movement guidelines, according to age and sex. The chi-square test and the Mann-Whitney test were used to explore differences and association according to age and *** 21% of the assessed toddlers complied with the overall movement behaviours guidelines. The highest prevalence of compliance was observed for PA among both boys and girls (98.63% and 98.59%, respectively), and among 1- and 2-year-old toddlers (100% and 97.61%, respectively). In contrast, the lowest compliance rates were observed for screen time (23.94% for boys and 32.87% for girls;and 16.66% for 1-year-old and 36.90% for 2-year-old toddlers). More than 60% of the assessed toddlers complied with sleep duration recommendation (74.64% and 67.12% for boys and girls, respectively;73.33% and 69.04%, for 1-year-old and 2-year-olds, respectively).ConclusionImplementing strategies to encourage toddlers' compliance with the 24-h movement guidelines in Brazilian low-income families should focus on maintaining PA levels and reducing screen time.

6-Fluoro-2-(aryl)quinoline-4-carboxylic acids 1-11 were synthesized via Pfitzinger reactions between 5-fluoroisatin and methyl aryl ketones. The molecules were studied regarding the impact of their substituent patterns (a- e) on their optical and bioactivity properties. All compounds were fluorescent in solution and had significant solvatochromic behavior, measured in tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, dimethylsulfoxide, acetonitrile, methanol, and water at different pHs. Compounds emitted in a broad spectral range from ultraviolet to green, with quantum efficiencies, varying from very weak (ex.: <0.5 % for 1a in DMSO and MeOH) to moderate-strong (similar to 35 % for 11e in dichloromethane). A biomonitoring of the synthetized compounds reveals antimicrobial and larvicidal (Aedes aegypti mosquitoes) profile. Gram-positive bacterial and fungal species showed greater sensitivity to the 11e, that presented both bactericidal and fungicidal nature. This compound with a methylenedioxy substituent showed favourable interactions with Dehydrosqualene synthase (DQS) and Squalene synthase (SQS), well-validated antimicrobial targets, considering key residues in the complex formation. The molecule also presented a good larvicidal profile, ranking second in terms of significant LC50 values. Thus, 11e has demonstrated an advantage scaffold for future biological tests in other organisms or at the cellular level.
