The demand for micro products has increased gradually since last decades in various areas, requiring the development of micro manufacturing processes. Micro manufacturing is characterized by the size of functional features (smaller than 10 um), a high precision, a good surface finishing and complex parts in a wide variety of materials. The Traditional Machining Processes (TMPs) are intensively used to produce micro-components, but the minimum feature size they can produce is limited. In parallel, the Nontraditional Machining Processes (NMPs) were developed to manufacture micro components of a few microns, but the processing times are slower. Hybrid Machining Processes (HMPs) was introduced to address the demand to increase production with an enhanced quality for difficult-to-machine materials such as ceramics. In this paper, the HMP considered, a combination of micro-milling and laser machining, is developed to machine ceramic materials. This HMP may be carried out at different stages in the ceramic production. The goal of this paper is to determine the most attractive production stage in ceramic machining with this HMP.

The CEL Method as an Alternative to the Current Modelling Approaches for Ti6Al4V Orthogonal Cutting Simulation

The finite element approach is often adopted to study the machining process. The Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations or even Arbitrary Eulerian-Lagrangian (ALE), one of their combinations, are the most employed in the current literature; each having their pros and cons. One of the most challenging issue in finite element modelling is the large strains during the cutting process that induce high deformation levels in the elements of the mesh. Remeshing contributes to decreasing mesh deformation but the criterion adopted to control it influences the results. The Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method proposes to combine the Lagrangian and Eulerian formalisms without any element deformation problem. This paper studies its implementation in Ti6Al4 V orthogonal cutting. The results are then compared to an experimental reference, as well as more standard models: an ALE model developed with Abaqus, an implicit Lagrangian model developed with Deform and an explicit Lagrangian model developed with AdvantEdge. The comparison is mainly based on the cutting forces and the chip morphology. It shows that the CEL formulation is a competitive alternative to the more standard models.

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, Computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.

Machining of aluminum alloys is of great interest for the aeronautical industry. Amongst those, the Al7075-T6 alloy remains a major component. Numerical studies of the orthogonal cutting of such alloys present a few challenges. One of them seems to be the absence of a unified way to capture the chip morphology without artificially modifying the mesh or the piece geometry to facilitate a segmented chip formation. It is accepted that Al7075-T6 forms segmented chips for typical industrial cutting speeds. In this contribution, a FEM model with a structured mesh is used with the commercial code Abaqus/Explicit v6.14 in the Lagrangian scheme. With this straight-forward approach, it is possible to reproduce the cutting forces and the chip morphology obtained in practical cases. The results are validated against experimental tests found in the literature.

Performance simulation of different toolpaths in 2D1/2 pocket milling

Pocket milling is a common task in manufacturing of aeronautical or space use parts, but also for molds and dies. This process is time-consuming and has an important impact on the cost of the final *** this paper, among all the possible directions of 2D1/2 pocketing improvement, the optimization of toolpath geometry has been chosen. Most of time, the toolpaths are computed from a Computer Aided Manufacturing software using classical tool trajectories such as “zig-zag” or “contour parallel”. These trajectories show discontinuities or local high curvature, creating frequent stop and go of the tool. These toolpaths are, fundamentally, not efficient in High Speed Milling. Some authors and software designers proposed methods to tackle those problems by local modification of the toolpath to improve his higher order continuity. Others, like M. Bieterman, build directly a C2 spiral tool path with low curvature (this strategy propose to solve numerically a 2D Partial Differential Equation problem and to use the iso-curves as structure curves to build the spiral). These strategies are efficient for High Speed Milling but leads to much longer toolpaths, so it can’t be necessarily a beneficial *** goal of this paper is to compare, for 2D1/2 pocket roughing, the time performance of different machining strategies: “zig-zag”, “contour parallel”, morph spiral and “Bieterman” used on different homothetic rectangular pockets. For this purpose, VPOp software developed in the LURPA lab from Cachan is used. With this procedure, it will be possible to see, for which ratios of size, a milling strategy is efficient or not.

In part manufacturing, efficient process should minimize the cycle time needed to reach the prescribed quality on the part. In order to optimize it, the machining time needs to be as low as possible and the quality needs to meet some requirements. For a 2D milling toolpath defined by sharp corners, the programmed feedrate is different from the reachable feedrate due to kinematic limits of the motor drives. This phenomena leads to a loss of productivity. Smoothing the toolpath allows to reduce significantly the machining time but the dimensional accuracy should not be neglected. Therefore, a way to address the problem of optimizing a toolpath in part manufacturing is to take into account the manufacturing time and the part quality. On one hand, maximizing the feedrate will minimize the manufacturing time and, on the other hand, the maximum of the contour error needs to be set under a threshold to meet the quality requirements. This paper presents a method to optimize sharp corner smoothing using b-spline curves by adjusting the control points defining the curve. The objective function used in the optimization process is based on the contour error and the difference between the programmed feedrate and an estimation of the reachable feedrate. The estimation of the reachable feedrate is based on geometrical information. Some simulation results are presented in the paper and the machining times are compared in each cases.

In this paper, there is an attempt to monitor and evaluate machining parameters when turning 34CrNiMo6 material under different cooling and lubrication conditions. The machining parameters concerned are temperature of the cutting tool and the workpiece, level of vibrations of the cutting tool, surface roughness of the workpiece, noise levels of the turning process and current drawn by the main spindle motor. Four different experimental machining scenarios were completed, specifically: conventional wet turning process, dry cutting and two additional modes employing cooling by cold air. Experimental data were acquired and recorded by an optimally designed network of sensors. Experimental data were statistically analyzed in order to reach conclusions. According to the research that has been done, although, overall, minimum cutting tool and workpiece temperatures were observed under wet machining, cold air cooling is capable of achieving comparable cooling results to wet machining. The lowest values of surface roughness were achieved by wet machining, whereas the lowest level of cutting tool vibrations were observed under cold air cooling.

Estimation of the influence of tool wear on force signals: A finite element approach in AISI 1045 orthogonal cutting

Industrial concerns arise regarding the significant cost of cutting tools in machining process. In particular, their improper replacement policy can lead either to scraps, or to early tool replacements, which would waste fine tools. ISO 3685 provides the flank wear end-of-life criterion. Flank wear is also the nominal type of wear for longest tool lifetimes in optimal cutting conditions. Its consequences include bad surface roughness and dimensional discrepancies. In order to aid the replacement decision process, several tool condition monitoring techniques are suggested. Force signals were shown in the literature to be strongly linked with tools flank wear. It can therefore be assumed that force signals are highly relevant for monitoring the condition of cutting tools and providing decision-aid information in the framework of their maintenance and replacement. The objective of this work is to correlate tools flank wear with numerically computed force signals. The present work uses a Finite Element Model with a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The geometry of the tool is changed for different runs of the model, in order to obtain results that are specific to a certain level of wear. The model is assessed by comparison with experimental data gathered earlier on fresh tools. Using the model at constant cutting parameters, force signals under different tool wear states are computed and provide force signals for each studied tool geometry. These signals are qualitatively compared with relevant data from the literature. At this point, no quantitative comparison could be performed on worn tools because the reviewed literature failed to provide similar studies in this material, either numerical or experimental. Therefore, further development of this work should include experimental campaigns aiming at collecting cutting forces signals and assessing the numerical results that were achieved through this work.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
