An approach to system-level modeling and simulation of a class of heterogeneous real-time systems the timing behaviour of which can be modeled by deterministic discrete event systems is described. Examples of systems we consider are self-timed systems, synchronously clocked systems, and mixed asynchronous/synchronous systems. Our model is based on several extensions to the model of timed marked graphs. Basically, we augment this model by adding new schedule constraints such that we can express simultaneity, synchronicity, finite buffering as well as arbitrary combinations of min- and max-constraints. We prove that these extensions allow efficient timing analysis and we show how to simulate realistic systems using the Ptolemy design system.

Pond received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1983 and 1990 respectively. Dr. Pond is currently a scientist at Hughes Space and Communications Company having joined in 1980. He has worked in the fields of communication system design mobile communication network and spacecraft payload design. He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. Dr. Li is very active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) having been a member of the Computer Communications Technical Committee since 1983 and having served as Chairman from 1987–1989. He served as Chairman of the Los Angeles Chapter of the IEEE Information Theory Group from 1983–1985. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.

When she returned to Canada she relocated to California. She spent a number of years living both in Los Angeles and coastal Northern California interspersed with several extended trips through the United States Mexico and Central America. Ms. McCulloch moved to Victoria British Columbia in 1989 and a year later registered in the cooperative education program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. She is presently in the fifth and final year of the program and has her sights set on graduate school. Besides the work described in this article she has been very much involved in the use of technology to assist in the delivery of curriculum at the senior secondary level. She lives on a country property a half-hour from the University with her husband her horse and three cats. W. Alfred Keddy:is an applications programmer/analyst for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. He received a BEng (1988) in Electrical Engineering and an MASc (1994) from the University of Victoria. Contents and implementation of a computer laboratory for undergraduate electromagnetics are described. The laboratory consists of four 3-hour sessions covering vector calculus, Maxwell's equations (integral and differential forms), wave propagation in materials, and wave behavior at planar interfaces. Each session contains theory (in the Help file), animations (where relevant) and a quiz. The program runs on IBM compatible 486-based PCs in a Windows environment and uses the Borland C ++ 4.0 compiler.

JVTOS (Joint Viewing and Tele-Operation Service), which is being implemented within CEC/RACE II project CIO (R2060), is a new teleservice for high-speed networks enabling distributed users to work in a collaborative fashion with multimedia. Core functionality of JVTOS is provided by an application sharing service that allows multimedia applications to be displayed and interacted with on multiple users' workstations simultaneously. The focus of this paper is on the audio/video elements of shared applications. We discuss the problems of sharing multimedia applications and describe our conception that supports interoperability between heterogeneous platforms.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

In the one-dimensional array approach, a logic circuit is realized by arranging NAND (NOR) gates in a one-dimensional array and interconnecting them. To minimize the area required, we must find a one-dimensional assignment of gates so as to minimize the vertical length. This optimization problem (called problem G) has been formulated as a graph problem and has already been proved to be NP-hard. In this paper, a restricted problem (called the problem R) is introduced anew wherein a connection of each net is restricted to be between two gates. The problem R plays an important role in developing a heuristic algorithm for the problem G. As for the time complexity, we show that the problem R is also NP-hard.

The spread spectrum (SS) communication is a communication system which has excellent characteristics against noise and is suited to the code-division multiplex. This paper describes a method which reduces the tracking phase error in DLL due to multipath waves in SS communication system. The method is based on the model with a single multipath wave.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2010. Papers were solicited in three broad topic areas: applications and services, network technologies, and internet design. All papers were considered on their merits by a uni?ed Technical ProgramCommittee (TPC); there was no attempt to enforce a quota among topic areas. We believe the resulting program is an excellentrepresentationofthebreadthofrecentadvancesinnetworkingresearch. This year, the conference received 101 full paper submissions from 23 co- trieson?vecontinents,re?ectingastrongdiversityinthenetworkingcommunity. Similarly, the 92 members of the TPC are from 21 countries and include a mix of academic, industry, and governmental a?liations. The TPC members, aided by some 50 external reviewers, provided a total of 470 reviews and follow-up discussions totaling more than 200 messages. The ?nal selections were made at a TPC meeting hosted by Columbia university in New York City, with both in-person and remote participation. In total, authors of accepted papers have academic and industry a?liations in 15 countries. We ?nally selected 24papers for presentationduring the conference technical sessions. A small number of papers were assigned a shepherd from the TPC to assist in paper revision. These statistics represent an acceptance rate of just under 24%, comparable to that of previous years. The TPC also identi?ed several papers that re?ect particularly promising early results; these papers were selected for presentation as work-in-progress papers and are identi?ed as such in the proceedings.
