We have developed a system to translate and interpret printed documents (such as periodicals) using a commercially available mobile device (e.g., a mobile telephone) with an embedded camera. The system comprises an automatic layout analysis tool along with an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine and a translation engine. The translation engine combines Rule-Based Machine Translation (RBMT) software, a list of context-sensitive words/phrases, and an encyclopedia for a list of words. We implemented the proposed system on a Nokia N900 smartphone for translating newspaper articles from Spanish to English. Our tests show that the accuracy and speed of the system is mostly influenced by the accuracy and speed of the OCR method used. Our application requires 19.43 MB of memory and no more than 28 MB of dynamic memory. We show the ability to complete the process for roughly 410 words in as little as 65 seconds for high accuracy or 17 seconds for high speed, on average. The energy consumption in both cases is minimal.

Many chronic diseases, such as heart diseases, diabetes, and obesity, can be related to diet. Hence, the need to accurately measure diet becomes imperative. We are developing methods to use image analysis tools for the identification and quantification of food consumed at a meal. In this paper we describe a new approach to food identification using several features based on local and global measures and a “voting” based late decision fusion classifier to identify the food items. Experimental results on a wide variety of food items are presented.

This work is motivated by the desire to use image analysis methods to identify and characterize images of food items to aid in dietary assessment. This paper introduces three texture descriptors for texture classification that can be used to classify images of food. Two are based on the multifractal analysis, namely, entropy-based categorization and fractal dimension estimation (EFD), and a Gabor-based image decomposition and fractal dimension estimation (GFD). Our third texture descriptor is based on the spatial relationship of gradient orientations (GOSDM), by obtaining the occurrence rate of pairs of gradient orientations at different neighborhood scales. The proposed methods are evaluated in texture classification and food categorization tasks using the entire Brodatz database and a customized food dataset with a wide variety of textures. Results show that for food categorization our methods consistently outperform several widely used techniques for both texture and object categorization.

We propose a system for helping individuals who follow a medical diet maintain this diet while visiting countries where a foreign language is spoken. Our focus is on diets where certain foods must either be restricted (e.g., metabolic diseases), avoided (e.g., food intolerance or allergies), or preferably consumed for medical reasons. However, our framework can be used to manage other diets (e.g., vegan) as well. The system is based on the use of a hand-held multimedia device such as a PDA or mobile telephone to analyze and/or disambiguate the content of foods offered on restaurant menus and interpret them in the context of specific diets. The system also provides the option to communicate diet-related instructions or information to a local person (e.g., a waiter) as well as obtain clarifications through dialogue. All computations are performed within the device and do not require a network connection. Real-time text translation is a challenge. We address this challenge with a light-weight, context-specific machine translation method. This method builds on a modification of existing open source Machine Translation (MT) software to obtain a fast and accurate translation. In particular, we describe a method we call n-gram consolidation that joins words in a language pair and increases the accuracy of the translation. We developed and implemented this system on the iPod Touch for English speakers traveling in Spain. Our tests indicate that our translation method yields the correct translation more often than general purpose translation engines such as Google Translate, and does so almost instantaneously. The memory requirements of the application, including the database of picture, are also well within the limits of the device.

Pose variations are known to give real challenges in face recognition system. In this paper we proposed a method to recognize non-frontal faces with high performance by relying only on single full frontal gallery faces. By utilizing only small regions of the face or patches, we compute the Fourier coefficients of these patches for each image and transform them into a single vector. Hence, instead of comparing and matching pixels values we use these vectors to form a linear relationship which is then used to estimate the frontal face vector and then compare it with the actual frontal feature vector. The results show an average performance accuracy of 90% across all pose.

The major obstacle in discrimination between different groups of subjects in a common cognitive state, by functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), has been the high intersubject functional and anatomical variability in the spatial patterns of brain activity. To overcome this, we have used two types of spatial descriptors that characterize the brain regions of interest (ROIs) involved in the cognitive tasks. They include, firstly three-dimensional invariant moment descriptors (3-DMIs), and secondly k-dimensional feature vectors based on concentric spheres. Both types of descriptors are applied to analyze the spatial patterns of cognitive activity of a challenging task and then to classify them across two different subject groups. SVM classifiers along with sequential floating forward feature selection technique are applied to the extracted descriptors of each ROI across the subjects. Our method is applied to experimental fMRI data with the aim of discriminating mental status of heroin IV (Intravenous) abusers and from of those in control subjects in a visual cue task which can induce drug craving. Our results demonstrate that 3-D texture of activation maps provide a good discrimination (with high accuracy) between healthy and addict group. © 2011 IEEE.

A passive image steganalysis method is proposed to universally detect spatial-domain steganography schemes. It is shown to have better performance than universal steganalyzers known to be powerful in spatial domain, including the WFLogSv and the WAM methods. This level of accuracy is the result of improving the WFLogSv steganalyzer by considering a more comprehensive relationship between the singular values of each image block and the linear correlation of the rows and the columns. That is, instead of the closeness of the lower singular values to zero, the energy distribution of the singular values is investigated. An innovative measure is proposed for this investigation, which is inspired from arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality. Experimental results confirm the supremacy of the proposed steganalysis scheme over its counterparts.

A passive universal image steganalysis method is proposed that is shown to be of higher detection accuracy than existing truly blind steganalysis methods including Farid's and the WAM. This is achieved by improving some weaknesses of Farid's steganalysis scheme in feature extraction, that is, instead of deriving an over-determined equation system for each sub band of the wavelet decomposition, the sub bands are divided into overlapping blocks and an over-determined equation system is constructed for each block. To guarantee the existence of finite answers, the over-determined equation systems are solved in a way different from Farid's by using Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse concept. Further improvement to the performance is achieved by adding diagonal directions and increasing the number of moments. The comparative evaluations confirm the superiority of the proposed method over prevalent blind steganalysis schemes. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we analyze large user photo collections from Flickr in order to select the most appropriate tags to describe a geographical area. We cluster photos based on their latitude and longitude and divide large areas into smaller clusters, which we will refer to as "geo-clusters". Geo-clusters have a fixed size and are able to overlap. They do not cover the entire area of interest, omitting parts where no single photo has been geo-tagged at. Within each geo-cluster we analyze all collected textual metadata i.e. the user selected tags of the photos it contains. We are then able to rank them and select the most appropriate that are able to describe landmarks and other places of interest that are contained within. Finally we place these tags on a map to help users to intuitively understand places of interest/visual content at a glance.

Of the 10 leading causes of death in the US, 6 are related to diet. Unfortunately, methods for real-time assessment and proactive health management of diet do not currently exist. There are only minimally successful tools for historical analysis of diet and food consumption available. In this paper, we present an integrated database system that provides a unique perspective on how dietary assessment can be accomplished. We have designed three interconnected databases: an image database that contains data generated by food images, an experiments database that contains data related to nutritional studies and results from the image analysis, and finally an enhanced version of a nutritional database by including both nutritional and visual descriptions of each food. We believe that these databases provide tools to the healthcare community and can be used for data mining to extract diet patterns of individuals and/or entire social groups.
