In this paper, we present a gender estimation technique that will determine whether a person looking at the camera is a male or female. Several facial features extracted from a face are passed to post-image-processing operations before they are sent to a rule-base classifier. We applied our technique to both static passport-like photos as well as several video sequences consisting of a single face each. Our database also contains images of females wearing headscarf as well as bald men. Our initial results showed a very promising outcome. For static face images, we obtained an accuracy of 100% correct gender estimation for females and 98% for males while for video sequences, the accuracy obtained was 87.5% for females and 70% for males.

Multiple description scalable coding based on T+2D wavelet decomposition structure is highly flexible for peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming. Finding the optimal truncation point of each code block (CB) within each description is an NP-hard problem. To implement an efficient low-complexity solution, we propose a simple clustering algorithm for partitioning the CBs into a limited number of clusters, such that one can find the optimal cluster-level redundancy-rate assignment matrix using a low-complexity full search. This approach improves the decoding quality compared to the co-echelon frameworks in which a non-optimal rate assignment matrix is used. In addition, the proposed clustering approach may be analytically represented by closed-form relations for low-complexity computation of optimal encoding parameters. The simulation results demonstrate that the adaptive proposed framework outperforms the approaches in by (0.25~1 dB), the scheme of by (1.3~1.6 dB), and the non-adaptive multiple description coding by (2.3~4.3 dB). Furthermore, the proposed clustering approach requires %52-%88 less computations compared to the framework in.

Scalable video coding allows for post-encoding adaptation of the coded bit stream. An appropriate rate-distortion model of the embedded bit stream can be useful for deriving closed-form relations between the parameters of the scalable encoder and the time-varying channel condition values. With a well-defined model, an adaptation mechanism can quickly update the optimal values of the encoder parameters within each transmission period, and hence, a real-time implementation may be realized. In this paper, two simple and accurate empirical (hyperbolic and exponential) models are developed for modeling the rate-distortion characteristics of a scalable video encoder based on motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) and two-dimensional (spatial) discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT). The experimental results demonstrate that the hyperbolic model has an acceptable approximation error (0.2~0.85dB) relative to the actual measurements, however, the exponential model demonstrates more error (0.75~3dB) relative to the actual measurements.

We propose a low complexity method for segmentation of text regions in natural images. This algorithm is designed for mobile applications (e.g. unmanned or hand-held devices) in which computational and energy resources are limited. No prior assumption is made regarding the text size, font, language, character set or the camera angle. However, the text is assumed to be located on a piecewise homogeneous background with a contrasting color. We have deployed our method on a Nokia N800 Internet tablet as part of a system for automatic detection and translation of outdoor signs. Our experiments show that the 0.3 megapixel images taken by the phone camera can be accurately segmented within the device in a fraction of a second.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a neurological disease that affects millions of individuals in the world. Majority of TLE patients suffer from refractory seizures. Determining abnormal/damaged regions of the brain that harbor seizure focus is a critical step towards treatment of TLE patients. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive method that we use in this work to determine damaged regions of white matter in the brain. To this end, we apply two methods, voxel based morphometry (VBM) and fiber tracking. We use these methods along with two anisotropy maps (EAR and FA) extracted from the DTI data. We use DTI data of 31 subjects (12 normal subjects and 19 TLE patients) for testing and evaluation studies. The VBM method shows that TLE is associated with reduction of both of FA and EAR values in several regions within the temporal lobes. The tractography method shows abnormal diffusion characteristics in three fiber bundles (fornix, uncinate fasciculus, and cingulum). The results show that the EAR maps are less sensitive to noise than the FA maps and the EAR values change more than the FA values in TLE. ©2010 IEEE.

During the last decades multimedia processing has emerged as an important technology to retrieve content based on similar data. Moreover, recent developments in the fields of high definition (HD) multimedia content and personal content collections (personal camcorders and digital still image cameras) tend to generate a huge volume of multimedia data everyday. Thus, the need for a meaningful, quick organization and access to generated content is now more than necessary; however, it still remains a rather difficult problem to be tackled both by humans and computers. In this paper we propose an intelligent extension of traditional image analysis methodologies towards more efficient digital content retrieval. The main idea is to extend local feature extraction methodologies by introducing additional geometrical constraints in the process. The proposed approach is tested and evaluated on a number of publicly available image datasets and results are very promising.

The maze traversal problem involves finding the shortest distance to the goal from any position in a maze. Such maze solving problems have been an interesting challenge in computational intelligence. Previous work has shown that grid-to-grid neural networks such as the cellular simultaneous recurrent neural network (CSRN) can effectively solve simple maze traversing problems better than other iterative algorithms such as the feedforward multi layer perceptron (MLP). In this work, we investigate improved learning for the CSRN maze solving problem by exploiting relevant information about the maze. We cluster parts of the maze using relevant state information and show an improvement in learning performance. We also study the effect of the number of clusters on the learning rate for the maze solving problem. Furthermore, we investigate a few code optimization techniques to improve the run time efficiency. The outcome of this research may have direct implication in rapid search and recovery, disaster planning and autonomous navigation among others.

The rapidly evolving wireless communications environment and 3G, where the standard are constantly created and modified, has given rise to the integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication). This integration has been widely applied in many disciplines including Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Logistic Management to aid the users to locate their vehicles remotely. Further on, the fast growth of city transportation also has stimulated the development of VMS where it is recognized as one of the major components of ITS. However, this system is rarely being implemented on embedded system using DSP processor. Thus, this paper discusses design and implementation of GSM/GPRS integration in a TMS320VC6713 for Vehicle Location that permits users to communicate with their vehicles via a Short Message Service (SMS). This system provides an alternative solution to solve vehicle theft and hijacking problems where the system is able track the real-time moving car location by using cellular phone. The system performance analysis has been carried out where the executions of three functions have been measured in clock cycles.

Vehicle velocity estimation is an important aspect of intelligent transportation systems. Normally velocity is estimated using dedicated laser speed traps and Doppler radars. Recently, the use of cameras is becoming more common for the purpose of traffic surveillance and smart surveillance system. It is thus the aim of this paper to propose a method for vehicle speed estimation using these existing video cameras. In this paper, we propose a vehicle speed estimation method from video analysis. The method proposed contains several steps; image preprocessing, centroid extraction and tracking. The proposed method transforms the 2D image points into a 3D virtual world to obtain actual vehicle position in 3D space. This is to account for perspective distortion commonly seen in images. Using these 3D points and measuring the time for displacement, the vehicle speed is obtained. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method gives accurate velocity estimation.

In this paper, we propose a new color face recognition (FR) method which effectively employs feature selection algorithm in order to find the set of optimal color components (from various color models) for FR purpose. The proposed FR method is also designed to improve FR accuracy by combining the selected color components at the feature level. The effectiveness of the proposed color FR method has been successfully demonstrated using two public CMU-PIE and Color FERET face databases (DB). In our comparative experiments, traditional grayscale-based FR, previous color-based FR, and popular local binary pattern (LBP) based FR methods were compared with the proposed method. Experimental results show that our color FR method performs better than the aforementioned three different FR approaches. In particular, the proposed method can achieve 7.81% and 18.57% improvement in FR performance on the CMU-PIE and Color FERET DB, respectively, compared to representative color-based FR solutions previously developed.
