In this paper we integrate several spatial texture tools into a texture-based video coding scheme. We implemented texture techniques and segmentation strategies in order to detect texture regions in video sequences. These textures are analyzed using temporal motion techniques and are labeled as skipped areas that are not encoded. After the decoding process, frame reconstruction is performed by inserting the skipped texture areas into the decoded frames. We are able to show an improvement over previous texture-based implementations in terms of compression efficiency.

In the last two decades, there have been significant advances in video coding. Since the early 1990s, a series of video coding standards have been developed to satisfy the growing requirements of video applications. Among these, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is the most recent standard achieving high compression efficiency. The video compression research community has continued working on new advances that go beyond traditional video coding architectures. In this paper, we overview of some recent advances in video coding and their potential applications. We discuss work in distributed coding, texture-based methods, scalable coding, and multi-view video coding.

Effective management and exploitation of multimedia documents requires extraction of the underlying semantics. Multimedia analysis algorithms can produce fairly rich but imprecise information about a multimedia document. In this paper, a multimedia reasoning architecture is presented using the fuzzy extension of expressive SHIN, f-SHIN. First a segmentation algorithm generates a set of over-segmented regions and a classification process is employed to assign those regions with semantic labels. A semantic-based refinement of the segmentation is follows and this information initializes the ABox of a fuzzy-knowledge that is used for multimedia reasoning. The proposed approach was tested on outdoor domain and shows promising results.

We propose a 3D nonparametric, entropy-based, coupled, multishape approach for the segmentation of subcortical brain structures in magnetic resonance images (MRI). Our method uses PCA to capture structures variability. Because of complex relationships of pose and shape of the coupled structures, we only use their shape and size relation. To this end, we apply separate registrations of the structures. For each structure, we consider a similarity transform using seven parameters. In addition, to generate most accurate results, we estimate probability density functions (pdf) iteratively. The proposed method minimizes an entropy-based energy function using quasi-Newton algorithm. To improve the results, we use analytical derivatives. Sample results are given for the segmentation of putamen, thalamus and caudate illustrating the impact of coupling on the accuracy of the results.

In this poster, we present an approach to contex-tualized semantic image annotation as an optimization problem. Ontologies are used to capture general and contextual knowledge of the domain considered, and a genetic algorithm is applied to realize the final annotation. Experiments with images from the beach vacation domain demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach and illustrate the added value of utilizing contextual information.

Wyner-Ziv video coding is a low complexity video encoding method that exploits source statistics at the decoder and shifts much of the computational complexity from the encoder to the decoder. Many Wyner-Ziv video coding schemes rely on the use of INTRA frames so that the decoder can derive sufficiently accurate side information. In this paper we extend our previous work on Wyner-Ziv coding that uses backward channel aware motion estimation. The basic idea is to perform motion estimation at the decoder and send the motion information back to the encoder through a backward channel. Experimental results show that this method can significantly improve the coding efficiency with a minimal use of the backward channel bandwidth. We also propose an error resilient technique by using error detection and adaptive coding to handle the situation when the backward channel is subject to erasure errors or delays.

This paper presents a framework for the detection of semantic features in video sequences. Low-level feature extraction is performed on the keyframes of the shots and a "feature vector" including color and texture features is formed. A region "thesaurus" that contains all the high-level features is constructed using a subtractive clustering method. Then, a "model vector" that contains the distances from each region type is formed and a SVM detector is trained for each semantic concept. Experiments were performed using TRECVID 2005 development data.

In this coding scenario, source statistics are exploited at the decoder so that it is feasible to design simplified encoders. In wireless networks, secure multicast protocols are difficult to implement efficiently due to the dynamic nature of the multicast group and scarcity of bandwidth at the receiving and transmitting ends. Mobility is one of the most distinct features to be considered in a wireless network. Moving users onto the key tree causes extra key management resources even though they are still in service. To take care of frequent handoff between wireless access networks, it is necessary to reduce the number of rekeying messages and the size of the messages. In this paper, we design a key management tree such that neighbors on the key tree are also physical neighbors on the cellular network. By tracking the user location, we localize the delivery of rekeying messages to the users who need them. This lessens the amount of traffic in wireless and wired intervals of the network.
