We prove that Fv(3,5;6) = 16, which solves the smallest open case of vertex Folkman numbers of the form Fv(3,k;k + 1). The proof uses computer algorithms.

In this paper, we establish a correspondence between the incremental algorithm for computing AT-models [8,9] and the one for computing persistent homology [6,14,15]. We also present a decremental algorithm for computing AT-models that allows to extend the persistence computation to a wider setting. Finally, we show how to combine incremental and decremental techniques for persistent homology computation. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

The objective of semantic segmentation in microscopic images is to extract the cellular, nuclear or tissue components. This problem is challenging due to the large variations of these components features (size, shape, orientation or texture). In this paper we improve the technique presented in [17] used to identify the epithelial nuclei (crypt) against interstitial nuclei in microscopic images taken from colon tissues. In the proposed enhanced approach, the crypt inner boundary is detected using the closing morphological pyramid instead of morphological hierarchy. The outer crypt border is determined by the epithelial nuclei, overlapped by the maximal isoline of the inner boundary. The use of sampling in building the pyramid offers computational efficiency, reduces the amount of used memory, increase the robustness and preserve the quality results. An analysis of the two approaches is performed considering the number of pixels processed to create each level. Also the relation between the levels of the hierarchical structures is established. © 2011 Faculty of Auto Control.

A robust method is presented for 3D face landmarking with facial pose and expression variations. This method is based on Multilevel Partition of Unity (MPU) Implicits without relying on texture, pose, orientation and expression information. The MPU Implicits reconstruct 3D face surface in a hierarchical way. From lower to higher reconstruction levels, the local shapes can be reconstructed gradually according to their significance. For 3D faces, three landmarks, nose, left eyehole and right eyehole, can be detected uniquely with the analysis of curvature features at lower levels. Experimental results on GavabDB database show that this method is invariant to pose, holes, noise and expression. The overall performance of 98.59% is achieved under pose and expression variations.©2011 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

3D multipath planning for UAV based on network graph

According to the characteristic and the requirement of multipath planning, a new multipath planning method is proposed based on network. This method includes two steps： the construction of network and multipath searching. The construction of network proceeds in three phases： the skeleton extraction of the configuration space, the judgment of the cross points in the skeleton and how to link the cross points to form a network. Multipath searching makes use of the network and iterative penalty method （IPM） to plan multi-paths, and adjusts the planar paths to satisfy the requirement of maneuverability of unmanned aerial vehicle （UAV）. In addition, a new height planning method is proposed to deal with the height planning of 3D route. The proposed algorithm can find multiple paths automatically according to distribution of terrain and threat areas with high efficiency. The height planning can make 3D route following the terrain. The simulation experiment illustrates the feasibility of the proposed method.

In this paper we describe modifications of irregular image segmentation pyramids based on user-interaction. We first build a hierarchy of segmentations by the minimum spanning tree based method, then regions from different (granularity) levels are combined to a final (better) segmentation with user-specified operations guiding the segmentation process. Based on these operations the users can produce a final image segmentation that best suits their applications. This work can be used for applications where we need accuracy in image segmentation, in annotating images or creating ground truth among others. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Coherence-enhancing diffusion (CED), based on analysis of oriented structures, has been extensively used in image processing. This diffusion filtering can keep some junctions and close broken linear structures, but it also destroys crease points and deforms nonlinear structures. In this paper, we proposed an improved algorithm for CED based on analysis of structure tensor and Hessian matrix. This approach can not only denoise and enhance linear structures such as edges, but also preserve nonlinear structures such as creases. Experiments with fingerprint image show that the improved CED outperforms classical CED. © 2011 IEEE.

Deblurring camera-based document image is an important task in digital document processing, since it can improve both the accuracy of optical character recognition systems and the visual quality of document images. Traditional deblurring algorithms have been proposed to work for natural-scene images. However the natural-scene images are not consistent with document images. In this paper, the distinct characteristics of document images are investigated. We propose a content-aware prior for document image deblurring. It is based on document image foreground segmentation. Besides, an upper-bound constraint combined with total variation based method is proposed to suppress the rings in the deblurred image. Comparing with the traditional general purpose deblurring methods, the proposed deblurring algorithm can produce more pleasing results on document images. Encouraging experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2011 IEEE.

Building facade classification by architectural styles allows categorization of large databases of building images into semantic categories belonging to certain historic periods, regions and cultural influences. image databases sorted by architectural styles permit effective and fast image search for the purposes of content-based image retrieval, 3D reconstruction, 3D city-modeling, virtual tourism and indexing of cultural heritage buildings. Building facade classification is viewed as a task of classifying separate architectural structural elements, like windows, domes, towers, columns, etc, as every architectural style applies certain rules and characteristic forms for the design and construction of the structural parts mentioned. In the context of building facade architectural style classification the current paper objective is to classify the architectural style of facade windows. Typical windows belonging to Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance/Baroque European main architectural periods are classified. The approach is based on clustering and learning of local features, applying intelligence that architects use to classify windows of the mentioned architectural styles in the training stage. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
