This paper introduces a new class of switching vector median filter. The proposed algorithm first uses four directional masks to analyze the color difference between the central pixel and its neighborhood pixels in the RGB color space and classify each color pixel into noisy pixel or noise-free one, and then employs the standard vector median filtering operations in the detected noisy locations to restore the corrupted pixels and leave the noise-free ones unchanged. The simulation results show that the proposed method excellently suppresses impulsive noise as well as preserving the image details well, and significantly outperforms the existing vector filtering solutions in terms of both the objective measures and the perceptual visual quality.

This paper addresses the issues of nonlinear edge-preserving image smoothing and segmentation. A ML-based approach is proposed which uses an iterative algorithm to solve the problem. First, assumptions about segments are made by describing the joint probability distribution of pixel positions and colours within segments. Based on these assumptions, an optimal smoothing algorithm is derived under the ML condition. By studying the derived algorithm, we show that the solution is related to a two-stage mean shift which is separated in space and range. This novel ML-based approach takes a new kernel function. Experiments have been conducted on a range of images to smooth and segment them. Visual results and evaluations with 2 objective criteria have shown that the proposed method has led to improved results which suffer from less over-segmentation than the standard mean-shift.

Video surveillance has drawn increasing interests in recent years. This paper addresses the issue of moving object tracking from videos. A two-step processing procedure is proposed: an incremental 2DPCA (two-dimensional principal component analysis)-based method for characterizing objects given the tracked regions, and a ML (maximum likelihood) blob-tracking process given the object characterization and the previous blob sequence. The proposed incremental 2DPCA updates the row- and column-projected covariance matrices recursively, and is computationally more efficient for online learning of dynamic objects. The proposed ML blob-tracking takes into account both the shape information and object characteristics. Tests and evaluations were performed on indoor and outdoor image sequences containing a range of single moving object in dynamic backgrounds, which have shown good tracking results. Comparisons with the method using the conventional PCA were also made.

In this paper, we present the electro-optical characteristics of EL devices made by SVA. A Sawyer-Tower circuit has been set up to evaluate the luminous efficiency based on the measurements of luminance and transferred charge of the EL device. A program is developed to plot the luminance and efficiency as a function of voltage from the input of measurement data. These plots are useful for evaluating the performance of the EL devices and providing feedback for the optimization of thin film structure and processing parameters. When the modulation voltage is 30 V, it is shown that the luminance and efficiency of the yellow (ZnS: Mn) EL device is L30 =250 cd/m2 and η30 = 1.3 lm/W, respectively. Furthermore , the color spectra and the CIE color coordinates of various EL samples (green and blue) developed by SVA are evaluated and discussed.

Video surveillance and object tracking have drawn increased interests in recent years. This paper addresses the problem of moving object tracking from image sequences captured from stationary cameras. Based on the previous work on video segmentation using joint space-time-range mean shift, we extend the scheme to enable the tracking of moving objects. Large displacements of pdf modes in consecutive image frames are exploited for tracking. We also improve the above mean shift-based video segmentation by introducing edge-guided merging of over-segmented regions. This can be viewed as an extension of the enhanced mean shift 2D image segmentation in [2] to the enhanced space-time-range mean shift video segmentation. Experiments have been conducted on several indoor and outdoor videos. Our preliminary results and performance evaluation have indicated the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In face recognition, the dimensionality of raw data is very high, dimension reduction (feature extraction) should be applied before classification. There exist several feature extraction methods, commonly used are principle component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) techniques. In this paper, we present a comparative study of some feature extraction methods for face recognition in the same conditions. The methods evaluated here include eigenfaces, kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), fisherfaces, direct linear discriminant analysis (D-LDA), regularized linear discriminant analysis (R-LDA), and kernel direct discriminant analysis (KDDA). For the purpose of comparison on feature extraction methods, we adopt nearest neighbor (NN) algorithm from existed classifiers of face recognition, since this classifier is common and simpleness. Empirical studies are conducted to evaluate these feature extraction methods with images from ORL Face Database, and it is found that in most cases LDA-based methods are efficient than PCA-based ones.

We formulate single-image multi-label segmentation into regions coherent in texture and color as a MAX-SUM problem for which efficient linear programming based solvers have recently appeared. By handling more than two labels, we go beyond widespread binary segmentation methods, e.g., MIN-CUT or normalized cut based approaches. We show that the MAX-SUM solver is a very powerful tool for obtaining the MAP estimate of a Markov random field (MRF). We build the MRF on superpixels to speed up the segmentation while preserving color and texture. We propose new quality functions for setting the MRF, exploiting priors from small representative image seeds, provided either manually or automatically. We show that the proposed automatic segmentation method outperforms previous techniques in terms of the global consistency error evaluated on the Berkeley segmentation database.
