In this paper, we propose a flexible fully-multiplicative orthogonal-group based ICA (FlexibleOgICA) algorithm, which can instantaneously separate the mixture of sub-Gaussian and super-Gaussian source signals. It adopts a self-adaptive nonlinear function, which adjusts its parameter to achieve better performance based on the estimation of the kurtosis of super-Gaussian source signals. We also have successfully applied the algorithm to obtain the fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) signal, showing its fast convergence speed and high separation performance

Automated tongue image segmentation in tongue diagnosis system of traditional Chinese medicine is difficult due to two factors: There are lots of pathological details on the surface of tongue, and the shapes of tongue bodies are quite different By adequately considering color information of tongue images, knowledge-based initial tongue body boundary detection and a color gradient are introduced into the gradient vector flow snake. The roughly detected tongue body boundary is employed to lead the usage of color gradient and the convergence of *** experiments results show robustness and accuracy of the algorithm. This work establishes a solid foundation for feature analysis of tongue diagnosis.

Feature selection (FS) is a most important step which can affect the performance of pattern recognition system. This paper presents a novel feature selection method that is based on ant colony optimization (ACO). ACO algorithm is inspired of ant's social behavior in their search for the shortest paths to food sources. In the proposed algorithm, classifier performance and the length of selected feature vector are adopted as heuristic information for ACO. So, we can select the optimal feature subset without the priori knowledge of features. Simulation results on face recognition system and ORL database show the superiority of the proposed algorithm

A novel and more effective algorithm used for segmenting pulmonary nodules in thoracic spiral CT images was presented. The algorithm is based on mean shift clustering method and CI (Convergence Index) features, which can represent the multiple Gaussian model of pulmonary nodules both for solid and sub-solid, substantially. The algorithm has the following steps: (1) calculating the CI features of all pixels in the region of interest (ROI), (2) combining the CI features with the intensity range and the spatial position of the pixels to form a feature vector set, (3) grouping the feature vector set to clusters with mean shift clustering algorithm. Owing to our algorithm can represent the multiple Gaussian model both for solid and sub-solid nodules, it can be used in any user interested nodule regions, especially suitable for the segmentation of sub-solid nodules. Experiments demonstrated that our algorithm can figure out the outline of pulmonary nodules of different forms more precisely.

In the Electroluminescent display panels, the largest portion of power consumption of data driver circuits comes from charging and discharging quite large capacitive loads, data lines. The proposed multi-steps data driving method can reduce the panel AC power consumption into only a few percent of that of conventional ones if the number of steps is large enough. In the proposed driving method, external capacitors supply charge to loads in multi-steps manner, and the charge returns to the capacitors instead of being discharged to ground. This charge recycling is the basis of reduction of the panel AC power. In this paper, the author gives a hardware implementation of 4-steps voltage generator with a minimum complexity.

In this paper, a new human face recognition method based on anti-symmetrical biorthogonal wavelet transformation (ASBWT) and eigenface was proposed. First the anti-symmetrical biorthogonal wavelet is chosen to degrade the face image dimension, meanwhile complete the process of face location and segmentation; And then human face is reverted through the face space of eigenface, the traditional average human face is replaced in the within-class scatter matrix. This within-class scatter matrix is used to calculate within-class and between-class distance proportion as a rule function, calculate the twice eigenface through discrete Karhunen-Loeve transform (DKLT), and use singular value decomposition (SVD) method to calculate the eigenvector. Finally we compute the weights and classify the face images. The results show that the proposed method has higher recognition rate and more robust than the traditional eigenface analysis method.

The endovascular repair of a traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta - that would otherwise lead to the death of the patient - is performed by delivering a stent-graft into the vessel at the rupture location. The age range of the affected patients is large and the stent-graft will stay in the body for the remaining life. The technique is relatively new, and no experience with regard to long-term effects, and durability exists. To predict long-term complications, such as ruptures or destructive interactions with surrounding tissue during the life of the patient, it is important to understand the - rather intense and constant - movement of the stent- graft during the cardiac cycle. A computed tomography with heart gating (gated CT) acquires sequences that show the region of the stent-graft at different time points. We analyze the motion of stent-grafts with a model based approach. Stent-grafts are represented as sparse sets of axis points extracted from the gated CT, and motion patterns are captured by a minimum description length based group-wise registration of the stent-graft at different time points. No parameterization or a priori definition of the topology is necessary, and highly variable elasticity properties in the data volume can by accounted for by the sparse statistical model, that captures correlations and motion components of the stent-graft. We report results for deformation models and registration accuracy for 5 patients.

The tongue is a unique organ in that it can be stuck out of mouth for inspection, in this act offering a proof of life, and yet it is otherwise well protected in the mouth and is difficult to forge. The tongue also presents both geometric shape information and physiological texture information which are potentially useful in identity verification applications. Furthermore, the act of physically reaching or thrusting out is a convincing proof for the liveness. Despite these obvious advantages, little work has hitherto been done on tongue features. A primary factor for preventing such research is the lack of an available 3D tongue image database. In this paper, we present a newly developed 3D tongue image database, which includes both tongue geometric shape and surface textures of 134 subjects. This is the first attempt at making a 3D tongue image database available for the research community, with the ultimate goal of fostering the research on tongue biometrics. The new database can be a valuable resource for algorithm assessment, comparison and evaluation.
