The number of arithmetic units used in the one-dimensional (1D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is the main consideration for reducing the area of VLSI implementation of 1D DWT, while the size of intermediate memory used for data buffering is another dominate factor of effecting hardware complexity of VLSI implementation for two-dimensional (2D) DWT. In this paper, we exploit the essential relationship between the size of temporal buffer (TB) required in the line-based architecture for 2D DWT (LBA2DDWT) and the number of registers used in the 1D DWT module, and present an improved method of mapping the registers used in the 1D DWT to the TB required in LBA2DDWT. Comparison results with the other design reported in previous literature demonstrate that, the proposed mapping method can reduce efficiently the size of memory required in LBA2DDWT.

Target detection and location in infrared clutter background is very important to infrared search and track system. Especially for small target detection in infrared image in background of sea and sky, there are no geometric and structure character to use. When targets such as ship and naval vessel sailing at long distance, they always appear around the sea-level line, and it is mixed with cloud and sea-wave clutter. It is difficult to segment and locate precisely. Background suppression based-on wavelet transformation is proposed in the paper. Wavelet decomposition makes it possible to analyze a signal both in time and frequency domains. In the paper infrared sea and key background images are processed. For their SNR is low and background is complex, using wavelet transformation decomposes an original image and extract approximate feature to reconstruct an image, which mainly includes background information. A new image would be obtained using background image subtracted from original image. There are mainly target and noise points left in the new image. By setting proper threshold, the target can be detected perfectly. At last, experiment results are given and show the method is practical.

In clinical practice, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a powerful technique for the visualization of blood vessels in X-ray image sequences. Different with traditional DSA image registration processes, in our proposed image registration method, the control points are selected from the vessel centerlines using multiscale Gabor filters, and mutual information (MI) is then taken as the similarity criterion to find the correspondences. Experimental results demonstrate our algorithm efficiently yields satisfying registration result for DSA images.

Microscopic halftone imagerecognition and analysis can provide quantitative evidence for printing quality control and fault diagnosis of printing devices, while halftone image segmentation is one of the significant steps during the procedure. Automatic segmentation on microscopic dots by the aid of the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) method that takes account of the fuzziness of halftone image and utilizes its color information adequately is realized. Then some examples show the technique effective and simple with better performance of noise immunity than some usual methods. In addition, the segmentation results obtained by the FCM in different color spaces are compared, which indicates that the method using the FCM in the f 1f 2f 3 color space is superior to the rest.

The morphological top-hat operator for grayscale images is part of the basic toolbox of mathematical morphology operators. We discuss two ways of generalising the top-hat operator to multi-channel images, such as colour images. The first method presented is the use of a vectorial order in the relevant vector space. The second is based on the demonstration that the top-hat operator can be rewritten in terms of increments. These increments can be replaced by any vectorial distance function, removing the requirement to first impose an order on the vectors. We present examples of the use of the suggested top-hat operators in feature detection in colour images and defect detection in texture.

A major obstacle to the wider use of 3D object reconstruction and modeling is the extent of manual intervention needed. Such interventions are currently massive and exist throughout every phase of a 3D reconstruction project: collection of images, image management, establishment of sensor position and image orientation, extracting the geometric detail describing an object, merging geometric, texture and semantic data. This work aims to develop a solution for automated documentation of archaeological pottery, which also leads to a more complete 3D model out of multiple fragments. Generally the 3D reconstruction of arbitrary objects from their fragments can be regarded as a 3D puzzle. In order to solve it we identified the following main tasks: 3D data acquisition, orientation of the object, classification of the object and reconstruction. We demonstrate the method and give results on synthetic and real data.

A noise erosion operator based on partial differential equation (PDE) is introduced, which has an excellent ability of noise removal and edge preservation for two-dimensional (2D) gradient data. The operator is applied to estimate a new diffusion coefficient. Experimental results demonstrate that anisotropic diffusion based on this new erosion operator can efficiently reduce noise and sharpen object boundaries.
