To be acceptable in industry, automatic visual inspection systems must be inexpensive, very accurate and should be flexible enough to accommodate changes in products. This flexibility can be reached if a modular concept that allows a quick and inexpensive adaption of the inspection process to any changes is used. This paper presents a concept where the detection of primitives is separated from the model-based analysis process. Existing patternrecognition software is re-used in the detection stage, allowing any detection algorithm to be tested and used without changing the analysis process. The visual inspection of analog watermeters serves for a demonstration of this concept.

since then has been involved in research on electromagnetic theory pattern recognition theory image processing voice recognition and research and development of OCR etc. After serving as the head of Iijima Special Research Laboratories he became Professorat the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1972. Later he became the Professor Emeritus of that Institute in 1986. He became a Professor at Tokyo Engineering University and Professor Emeritus of that University in 1991. In 1991 he became Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and was appointed Vice President of that Institute in 1992. He served successively as editor examiner secretary of general affairs inspector councilor committee-head of pattern recognition and specialized studies head of Tokyo chapter and vice president of this Institute. In 1991 he became the Honorary Member.He received the Paper Award from the Institute four times and the literary works Award once. He received the Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award in 1976 and 1989 respectively. He received the Purple Ribbon Medal from the Emperor in 1988.

During the past few years, there has been a series of papers published on the theory of the natural observation method. As one of the important applications of this theory, the problems of acceptance and generation of a general waveform are discussed here. The case of polynomial waveforms and its corresponding theory was published previously. A great extension of that theory which covers general waveforms is presented here and its full picture is clarified.

This paper describes an extension of the binary curve pyramid to curves with strengths. In particular we propose fuzzy relations to represent curve strength. We show how fuzzy relations can be processed in a pyramidal framework. The advantage gained by this method is that the properties of the binary curve pyramid are preserved, and that we gain some additional properties, which can be used in the pyramid construction phase.

A new algorithm for building irregular pyramids is presented. The algorithm is based on only two basic operations on graphs, contraction and removal of edges. By making use of the concept of dual graphs, the algorithm overcomes the problem of unbounded vertex degree proper to the existing approach to building irregular pyramids. This boundedness extends the scope of parallel, degree preserving graph contraction also to irregular structures. Our method can be applied to all problems in which a 2D discrete space can be represented by a planar graph. Four-connected square grids, region adjacency graphs, Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations are examples of such plane representations.

A general design strategy based on experiences of a successful application project concerning the reading of analog devices in order to automate the reading process is presented. The problem space is defined and a description language is introduced which controls the interpretation of specific types of instruments and decouples recognition of primitiva and formation of an aspired result. An analysis system design based on experience with a successful application in the field of inspection and calibration of an analog display measuring instrument is presented in this paper. First the measuring instrument is divided into its primitiva, defining the a priori known parameter of the primitiva: shape, relative position and size. According to the shape of the primitiva patternrecognition algorithms are used to detect the primitiva in intensity images. These independent detection algorithms are then grouped into a detecting order with respect to efficiency. Following a discussion of the general design of the detecting algorithm, specific constraints of the application and the industrial environment are considered in order to refine the general design to an applicable and efficient device by modifying both hardware and software configuration depending on the given constraints. Finally, results of the implementation of the algorithm and the constructed image acquisition device are discussed.< >

Presents an algorithm for image segmentation with irregular pyramids. Instead of starting with the original pixel grid, the authors first apply an adaptive Voronoi tessellation to the image. For irregular pyramid construction the authors present a Hopfield neural network which controls the decimation process. The validity of the authors' approach is demonstrated by several examples in image segmentation.
