image fusion is an important tool in remote sensing, since many Earth observation satellites provide both high-resolution panchromatic (Pan) and low-resolution multispectral (MS) images. To date, many image fusion techniques have been developed. However, the available algorithms can hardly produce a satisfactory fusion result for IKONOS and QuickBird images. Among the existing fusion algorithms, the IHS technique is the most widely used one, and the wavelet fusion is the most frequently discussed one in recent publications because of its advantages over other fusion techniques. But the color distortion of these two techniques is often obvious. The support value fusion technique demonstrates some advantages over the conventional methods. This study presents a new fusion approach that integrates the advantages of both the IHS and the support value techniques to reduce the color distortion of QuickBird fusion results. Different QuickBird images have been fused with this new approach. Visual and statistical analyses prove that the concept of the proposed extended fast IHS (eFIHS) and support value integration is promising, and it does significantly improve the fusion quality compared to conventional IHS (eFIHS) and wavelet fusion techniques.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that disrupts social and cognitive functions. Various autism studies revealed abnormalities in several brain regions. There is an increasing agreement from structural imaging studies on the abnormal anatomy of the white matter (WM) in autistic brains. In addition, the deficits in the size of the corpus callosum (CC) and its sub-regions in patients with autism relative to controls are well established. This paper presents two novel classification techniques of autism based on structural MRI. Our analysis is based on shape descriptions and geometric models. We compute the 3D distance map to describe the shape of the WM and use it as a statistical feature to discriminate between the two groups. We also use our recently proposed non-rigid registration technique to devise another classification approach by statistically analyzing and comparing the deformation fields generated from registering CC's onto each others. The accuracy of our techniques was tested on postmortem and on in vivo brain MR data. The results are very promising and show that, contrary to traditional methods, the proposed techniques are less sensitive to age and volume effects

Geometric analysis of normal and autistic human subjects reveal distinctions in deformations in the corpus callosum (CC) that may be used for image analysis-based studies of autism. Preliminary studies showed that the CC of autistic patients is quite distinct from normal controls. We use an implicit vector representation of CC to carry out the registration process which reduces the pose differences between the CC's models. Then the complex Fourier descriptor analysis is used to extract a feature vector of each CC model. This feature is used to build a criteria of discrimination between the normal and autistic subjects. This paper introduces a new method for the 2D shape registration problem by matching vector distance functions. A variational frame work is proposed for the global and local registration of CC's. A gradient descent optimization is used which can efficiently handle both the rigid and the non-rigid operations together. The registration of real CC extracted from MRI data sets demonstrates the potential of the proposed approach. Discrimination results will be demonstrated as well to show the efficiency of the discrimination technique.

In this paper we propose a method that identifies users at H.264 streaming using watermarking with fingerprints. The watermark can efficiently reduce the potential danger of forgery or alteration. Especially a biometric watermark has various advantages. Among entire biometric characteristics, the fingerprint is the most convenient and economical. In this paper we propose a novel fingerprint-based watermarking technique that can survive under very low bit-rate compression. The proposed algorithm consists of enhancement of a fingerprint image, watermark insertion using discrete wavelet transform. In this paper we also analyze H.264 compression pattern and its effects on watermarking. After restoring the damaged watermark sequence using various filters, the algorithm extracts the embedded watermark. The proposed algorithm can achieve robust watermark extraction against H.264 compressed videos.

This paper addresses the issue of assessing the quality of the clusters found by fuzzy and hard clustering algorithms. In particular, it seeks an answer to the question on how well cluster validity indexes can automatically determine the appropriate number of clusters that represent the data. The paper surveys several key existing solutions for cluster validity in the domain of image segmentation. In addition, it suggests two new indexes. The first one is based on Akaike's information criterion (AIC). While AIC was devoted to other domains such as statistical estimation of model fitting, it is implemented here for the first time as a validation index. The second index is developed from the well-established idea of cross-validation. The existing and new indexes are evaluated and compared on several synthetic images corrupted with noise of varying levels and volumetric MR data.

Robust real-time tracking for visual surveillance

This paper describes a real-time multi-camera surveillance system that can be applied to a range of application domains. This integrated system is designed to observe crowded scenes and has mechanisms to improve tracking of objects that are in close proximity. The four component modules described in this paper are (i) motion detection using a layered background model, (ii)object tracking based on local appearance, (iii) hierarchical object recognition, and (iv) fused multisensor object tracking using multiple features and geometric constraints. This integrated approach to complex scene tracking is validated against a number of representative real-world scenarios to show that robust, real-time analysis can be performed. This paper presents a robust, real-time block matching-based tracking method for deformable objects. Block matching has been used for various image processing applications as well as video coding because it has a regular computing structure. Video tracking based on block matching, however, fails to provide correct motion information of the object when; (i) background changes spatio-temporally, (ii) an object deforms, and (iii) occlusion occurs. To solve these problems, background is first generated to localize a deformable object, and the object is defined by the corresponding boundary. Shape of the object is reconstructed by using a set of shape control points (SCPs) inside the object boundary, and the trajectory of each SCP is traced by block matching. We use an additional SCP Preserving step at every certain interval of frames for more efficient object tracking. For the experiment we used a computer-generated moving fish sequence and an outdoor sequence. Experimental results show that the proposed tracking algorithm can solve the problem of existing block matching-based methods, and at the same time it can track an object with occlusion and/or deformation.

image stabilization, particularly during zoom-in is an important feature in consumer cameras. Existing methods to stabilize an image often make an incorrect motion vector by an improper choice of motion estimation or correction method. The proposed algorithm is simple and effective;it is suitable for low cost camcorders, digital cameras, CCTV, surveillance video systems, and television broadcasting systems. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a new technique for the estimation of short-term linear predictive parameters of speech and noise from noisy data and their subsequent use in waveform enhancement schemes. The method exploits a priori information about speech and noise spectral shapes stored in trained codebooks, parameterized as linear predictive coefficients. The method also uses information about noise statistics estimated from the noisy observation. Maximum-likelihood estimates of the speech and noise short-term predictor parameters are obtained by searching for the combination of codebook entries that optimizes the likelihood. The estimation involves the computation of the excitation variances of the speech and noise auto-regressive models on a frame-by-frame basis, using the a priori information and the noisy observation. The high computational complexity resulting from a full search of the joint speech and noise codebooks is avoided through an iterative optimization procedure. We introduce a classified noise codebook scheme that uses different noise codebooks for different noise types. Experimental results show that the use of a priori information and the calculation of the instantaneous speech and noise excitation variances on a frame-by-frame basis result in good performance in both stationary and nonstationary noise conditions. © 2006 IEEE.
