Age-related changes significantly affect elderly users’ interaction with specific products and services. Nevertheless, the challenges experienced by elderly users are difficult to be perceived and understood, especially by younger people. Inspired by the concept of aging suits, we propose a Virtual Reality-based approach, where age-related visual impairments are simulated in virtual environments. The aim is to provide an approximation of the experience of viewing and interacting with a product, from the perspective of elderly persons with specific age-related visual problems. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is examined through an experiment involving package design evaluation. The experimental results demonstrate that Virtual Reality can play an important role on understanding the challenges that elderly users face, thus support the design of elderly-friendly products. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Meta Architecture for Point Cloud Analysis

Recent advances in 3D point cloud analysis bring a diverse set of network architectures to the field. However, the lack of a unified framework to interpret those networks makes any systematic comparison, contrast, or analysis challenging, and practically limits healthy development of the field. In this paper, we take the initiative to explore and propose a unified framework called PointMeta, to which the popular 3D point cloud analysis approaches could fit. This brings three benefits. First, it allows us to compare different approaches in a fair manner, and use quick experiments to verify any empirical observations or assumptions summarized from the comparison. Second, the big picture brought by PointMeta enables us to think across different components, and revisit common beliefs and key design decisions made by the popular approaches. Third, based on the learnings from the previous two analyses, by doing simple tweaks on the existing approaches, we are able to derive a basic building block, termed PointMetaBase. It shows very strong performance in efficiency and effectiveness through extensive experiments on challenging benchmarks, and thus verifies the necessity and benefits of high-level interpretation, contrast, and comparison like PointMeta. In particular, PointMetaBase surpasses the previous state-of-the-art method by 0.7%/1.4/%2.1% mIoU with only 2%/11%/13% of the computation cost on the S3DIS datasets. Landscape studies have evolved into a significant branch of historical archaeological research, by placing emphasis on the ecological, economic, political and cultural values of pre-modern settled and sacred landscapes. The aim of our work is to support the systematic exploration of landscape archaeology in the Xeros River valley in Cyprus, through time, from prehistory to today, through the design and development of an Augmented Reality (AR) application. The AR application supports the exploration of pre-modern monuments and archaeological sites in the Xeros River valley, serving as a guided tour for visitors of the area. By employing image recognition and utilizing a location-based practice, the application provides the users with an immersive and educational experience. Initial reactions by experts in landscape studies indicate the potential of the application in enabling the narration and visualization of the historicity of the landscape and the fate of religious and other monuments of the past 1500 years. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Responsive matrix cells: A focus+context approach for exploring and editing multivariate graphs

Matrix visualizations are a useful tool to provide a general overview of a graph’s structure. For multivariate graphs, a remaining challenge is to cope with the attributes that are associated with nodes and edges. Addressing this challenge, we propose responsive matrix cells as a focus+context approach for embedding additional interactive views into a matrix. Responsive matrix cells are local zoomable regions of interest that provide auxiliary data exploration and editing facilities for multivariate graphs. They behave responsively by adapting their visual contents to the cell location, the available display space, and the user task. Responsive matrix cells enable users to reveal details about the graph, compare node and edge attributes, and edit data values directly in a matrix without resorting to external views or tools. We report the general design considerations for responsive matrix cells covering the visual and interactive means necessary to support a seamless data exploration and editing. Responsive matrix cells have been implemented in a web-based prototype based on which we demonstrate the utility of our approach. We describe a walk-through for the use case of analyzing a graph of soccer players and report on insights from a preliminary user feedback session. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Virtual Reality(VR) is still an emerging technology in terms of recognizing its full potential in education and specifically in teacher education. A key issue of a VR-based approach for teacher training, is the level of presence along with the empathy inflicted on the trainees that will allow them to experience realistic and emotion-rich classroom situations in a virtual environment. This paper describes an experiment that aims to assess the influence of the graphical realism of a virtual classroom to the levels of presence and development of empathy skills for trainee teachers. Moreover, a second objective is to investigate whether there are significant differences between training in a VR classroom and a real physical classroom and how this affects the trainee teacher. The overall conclusion of the experiment is that the design of the VR classroom environment influenced the levels of immersion and presence. Moreover, according to the results there are serious indications that the VR system provided users the immersion necessary for the development of embodied thinking skills and thus of empathy in relation to multiculturalism. © 2018 ACM.

The current study concerns the identification of possible differences in perception between the virtual and the real world in terms of the effect on brain activity. For this reason, an EEG device was used to capture participants' brain activity in different brain areas during their exposure to different virtual and real environments. The environments considered in this study portray a classroom environment with a scenario suitable for teacher training and professional development. The first aim of the experiment is to investigate if exposure to a virtual environment can affect motor, cognitive or other function of the users, and the second aim is to test if the graphics content and nature of such an environment can influence the user experience. During the study, the optimum duration of exposure in a virtual environment was also assessed by measuring the time that the brain needs to perceive and adapt to the new state. Our results, consisting of EEG data analyzed in 10 Regions of Interest (ROIs) and responses from an Igroup Presence questionnaire, indicated a significant difference in each brain area, especially in the frontal and occipital region, when a participant was exposed to a non-realistic virtual environment, compared to a realistic one, highlighting the impact of the selected virtual environment design. The results of the experiment can play an important role in defining the characteristics of optimal virtual environments for virtual reality-based training applications. © 2018 ACM.

Visits to art museums are not appealing to a wide sector of the public, limiting in that way the exposure of art works to the wider community and especially the younger generation. In this paper we investigate the use of Virtual Reality (VR) for displaying animated artworks as a means for creating an enhanced user experience that could make visits to art-galleries more appealing. A key point of the proposed technique is the analysis of the art-works that enables the determination of a most appropriate setting and animation that best promotes the original message of the painter. The promise of this approach has been validated through an experimental user evaluation where users clearly indicated the benefits of using interactive virtual environments for presenting animated art paintings. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

Incidents involving bullying in schools present a difficult challenge for educators who need to identify potentially dangerous behaviors in comparison to 'innocent' types of interstudent interactions. In this paper we investigate the use of a dedicated Virtual Reality application as a means of training educators to identify alarming bullying activities. The Virtual Reality environment simulates a typical middle school, where different bullying-related incidents take place. The virtual environment is visualized using a Virtual Reality headset in conjunction with eye tracking techniques that facilitate user interaction. In order to make realistic animations that resemble human motions, state of the art motion tracking equipment was used for generating realistic avatar movements. According to the scenario of the application, the user witness different types of student behavior and he/she has to take decisions on how to control and deal with the situation. The prototype was tested by active teachers who reported that the incidents within the simulation were similar to real life experiences and suggested that the application could be used in teacher training education providing inexperienced teachers feedback on how to recognize and manage bullying.
