Dimensions and Anatomical Variants of the Foramen Transversarium of Typical Cervical Vertebrae

The study was conducted on random sample of seventy-one dried, typical cervical vertebrae (C3-C6). The data on the age, sex, and built was not available. Using vernier calipers with 0.01 mm accuracy, the anteroposterior and transverse diameters of transverse foramina and their distance from the medial margin of the uncinate process were measured bilaterally. The mean diameter of the right/left transverse foramen varied from 2.54 mm to 7.79 mm (mean = 5.55 ± 0.87 mm) and from 2.65 mm to 7.35 mm (mean = 5.48 ± 0.77 mm), respectively. The transverse foramen was less than 3.5 mm in three vertebrae on the right and two on the left. The osteocytes observed in 21.3% of specimens and the narrow transverse foramen may place patients at risk for vertebrobasilar insufficiency or thrombus formation. The mean distance of the transverse foramen from the medial margin of uncinate process is an important landmark to avoid vertebral artery laceration and was 5.0 ± 0.87 mm (range: 3.5-7.9 mm) on the right and 5.0 ± 1.0 mm (range: 3.2-7.7 mm) on the left side. No statistically significant difference was observed between the right and left sides. The accessory transverse foramina seen in 24% of vertebrae suggest duplications or fenestrations in the vertebral artery.

Periods in the soybean summer cycle that are sensitive to the occurrence of high temperatures were studied. An analysis was performed on the variability of soybean yields associated with crop canopy temperatures during key development periods. A land surface temperature (LST) data series from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on the Aqua satellite was processed between 2003 and 2012 that covered the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data from MODIS on the Terra satellite were used to monitor the LST during different phenological stages. Spatially interpolated maps of soybean yield distributions were generated using data obtained from Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) at state and municipality levels. The results indicate that canopy-LST occurrence in mid-February, during the grain filling, is most correlated to yield reduction (R2 = 0.82 and RMSD = 14.4%). At the state level, the average yield is 2003 kg·ha-1 with a standard deviation of 308 kg·ha-1. The overall average of the canopy-LST is 305.0 K (31.8°C) with a standard deviation of 1.9 K. The slope of the downward linear relationship between canopy-LST and yield was -28.7%. These results indicate that monitoring heat wave events can provide important information for characterising agriculture vulnerability.

After 4K, 8K UHD resolution can be considered the new challenge for film, visualization and television. Due to the dimension of 8K image, the remote micro and macro images are considered appropriate for visualization with scientific and educational purposes. This article describes the implementation of the 8K video plug-in to play UHD videos into the SAGE, a collaborative environment for the advancement of scientific research and education developed by EVL (Electronic visualization Laboratory), upgrading its current resolution for video playing. It also presents the challenges of producing 8K content, the development of the code and introduces the features to view 8K ultra high definition videos in multiple tiles through the use of low cost computer clusters. The SAGE 8K video plug-in implementation was made possible because of the previous development of the Fogo Player, a system to run 4K and 8K content. The results were successfully presented at the CineGrid International Workshop 2013 in San Diego.

Increases in the frequency of extreme events, such as the occurrence of high temperatures, are prone to produce severe effects on summer crop yields especially soybeans and maize. Under a climate change scenario, the physical parameters of the Earth's surface, such as temperature, water availability and evapotranspiration, are expected to change over the next decades. We investigated the variability of soybean yields associated with crop canopy temperatures during key development that are sensitive to the occurrence of high temperatures in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. In the present paper, we propose that the temperature fluctuations around the optimum level in the crop canopy can cause favorable effects on soybean yields in MT State/Brazil. In order to evaluate the above mentioned hypothesis, we investigated the effects of canopy temperature on soybean yield during flowering to the grain filling periods using Aqua and Terra/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite data, between 2003 and 2010. Comparison of spatially interpolated maps show that yield variations are positively related to canopy-LST during of flowering period, with R 2 =0.60 and RMSD=6.2%. Overall results show that increases in canopy-LST temperature in Mato Grosso State, during flowering/grain filling periods, are related to higher soybean yield averages.

A large-area graphene layer identification technique was developed for research and industrial applications. It is based on the analysis of optical microscopy images using computational image processing algorithms. The initial calibration is performed with the micro-Raman spectroscopy. The method can be applied to the wafer-scale graphene samples. The technique has the potential to be the gateway in the development of fully automated statistical process control methods for the next generation thin-film materials used by the semiconductor industry. The proposed technique can be applied to graphene on arbitrary substrates and used for other atomically thin materials.

Editor's Summary Viewshare is a platform designed to support the work of cultural heritage institutions in their efforts to share data, dynamically visualize their collections and access and discover items. It was developed as a free and open tool for partners of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation program. Its central goal is to reveal patterns within collections to lead to new understanding. Viewshare features a simple and intuitive interface and limited requirements for technical skills, and it supports a wide variety of digital collections and metadata types. Its users establish custom metadata, import and enhance collection data and create their own interface to support dynamic and interactive views of their digital collections. The process is illustrated with the Fulton Street Trade Card Collection from the Brooklyn Public Library.

In this paper the authors describe a novel way to conduct large-scale human studies achieving the maximum outreach and impact with the minimum cost. An iPhone health application, 'Walk n' Play', was developed and released for free in the App Store. The application measures calories spent due to walking activities through the iPhone's accelerometer. It is a real-time awareness tool that helps people to keep their sedentariness in check. Furthermore, it uses motivational mechanisms based on buddy support/competition and social networking to increase daily physical activity. The anonymous data gathered from thousands of users around the world, reveal patterns of human behavior at a resolution and scale not feasible before. © 2010 Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

Collaborating across disciplines can be a difficult task for a variety of reasons. One of which is the lack of common methodologies and tools for visualization and analysis. Tools developed in one group can rarely be applied directly to data from another group, due to differences in data formats, analysis methodologies, and learning curves associated with the advanced visualization systems necessary for modern scientific data. Despite these difficulties, multi-physics collaboration is key to developing and understanding the next generation of computational models, which couple the dynamic processes and scales of multiple disciplines. As a step towards integrative models, we propose a visualization and analysis system to serve as a common interconnect between chemical and nuclear engineering. This choice allows multiple organizations to fruitfully exchange data and example visualizations in a reproducible manner, providing a foundation for productive discussion. In this work, we demonstrate the utility of a visualization system as it applies to bridging simulation domains and providing for multidisciplinary research in nuclear and chemical engineering.

Urban biodiversity conservation needs a firm scientific foundation, one that draws upon active and regionally calibrated research programs. Until recently this foundation has not existed. In this paper we examine the way in which the emerging discipline of restoration ecology in an urban context can learn from the experiences of ongoing restoration projects and in turn how novel insights from research of urban soils can help these projects define and reach their goals. Limitations on collaboration between academic researchers and practitioners continues be problematic. We discuss a model whereby this impediment may be removed. A case study of Rhamnus cathartica, an invader of Midwestern woodlands which modifies some important soil ecosystem properties will be used to illustrate the potential for engagement between research and practice. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
