Highly sensitive and precise X‐ray imaging from Chandra, combined with the superb spatial resolution of HST optical images, dramatically enhances our empirical understanding of compact binaries such as cataclysmic variables and low mass X‐ray binaries, their progeny, and other stellar X‐ray source populations deep into the cores of globular clusters. Our Chandra X‐ray images of the globular cluster NGC 362 reveal 100 X‐ray sources, the bulk of which are likely cluster members. Using HST color‐magnitude and color‐color diagrams, we quantitatively consider the optical content of the NGC 362 Chandra X‐ray error circles, especially to assess and identify the compact binary population in this condensed‐core globular cluster. Despite residual significant crowding in both X‐rays and optical, we identify an excess population of Hα‐emitting objects that is statistically associated with the Chandra X‐ray sources. The X‐ray and optical characteristics suggest that these are mainly cataclysmic variables, but we also identify a candidate quiescent low mass X‐ray binary. A potentially interesting and largely unanticipated use of observations such as these may be to help constrain the macroscopic dynamic state of globular clusters.

This paper provides a brief history of recent activity fostered by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) that has lead to ongoing discussion, investigation, analysis and community building around an area being called "Humanitarian Service Science and Engineering" (HSS&E). HSS&E is an extension of market-based "service science" into humanitarian and government service areas where there is a less clear and more complex "customer/provider" relationship;where criteria for optimization extend beyond single, relatively straightforward criteria such as efficiency or cost to include numerous, often competing goals involving complex areas such as politics, social justice and values;and where fundamental infrastructure such as power, transportation and communication cannot be assumed. HSS&E explores the applicability of existing modeling methodologies to this expanded, more complex environment of service science and engineering, and in doing so has identified the need for an integration of qualitative and quantitative methodologies beyond that which currently exists.

Computer Aided Sculpting course is an experimental interdisciplinary course that focuses on both artistic and scientific aspects of shape modeling. I have been teaching this course every year since 1996. The problems coming out of the course influenced the development of our Topological Mesh Modeling system, called TopMod. More than 10 students added new features to TopMod while they were taking Computer Aided Sculpting course as their projects. I have at least ten published papers and sketches about the techniques I have developed while I was teaching the course.

This paper presents our recent theoretical results on high genus modeling. We introduce a new concept called regular handles. Using regular handles it is possible to increase genus without increasing the number of vertices. Using regular handles a wide variety of mesh structures can be constructed. One of the usages of regular handles is to construct families of regular meshes, which is useful to create a wide variety of high genus mesh structures
