This paper presents a novel method for multi-view sequential scene reconstruction scenarios such as in aerial video, that exploits the constraints imposed by the path of a moving camera to allow for a new way of detecting and correcting inaccuracies in the feature tracking and structure computation processes. The main contribution of this paper is to show that for short, planar segments of a continuous camera trajectory, parallax movement corresponding to a viewed scene point should ideally form a scaled and translated version of this trajectory when projected onto a parallel plane. This creates two constraints, which differ from those of standard factorization, that allow for the detection and correction of inaccurate feature tracks and to improve scene structure. Results are shown for real and synthetic aerial video and turntable sequences, where the proposed method was shown to correct outlier tracks, detect and correct tracking drift, and allow for a novel improvement of scene structure, additionally resulting in an improved convergence for bundle adjustment optimization. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The engineer is supported for the design of ribbed plastic components by basic guidelines concerning the shape and the position of the ribs. Thus, the experience and intuition of the individual engineer plays an important role. For this reason, a component with an optimal rib structure cannot be guaranteed. In this publication a new strategy is presented as assistance for the design of ribbed plastic components. The guidance of the design of rib structures in injection molded plastic parts by tensor visualization will result in an optimized rib structure which leads to stiffer parts when identical material is used. FE-simulations as well as experimental tests validate the optimization potential of tensor visualization for the design of ribbed plastic components. © 2014 Carl Hanser Verlag, München.

In prose literature often complex dynamics of interpersonal relationships can be observed between the different characters. Traditionally, node-link diagrams are used to depict the social network of a novel. However, static graphs can only visualize the overall social network structure but not the development of the networks over the course of the story, while dynamic graphs have the serious problem that there are many sudden changes between different portions of the overall social network. In this paper we explore means to show the relationships between the characters of a plot and at the same time their development over the course of a novel. Based on a careful exploration of the design space, we suggest a new visualization technique called Fingerprint Matrices. A case study exemplifies the usage of Fingerprint Matrices and shows that they are an effective means to analyze prose literature with respect to the development of relationships between the different characters. © 2013 The Author(s).

Large amounts of multivariate data are collected in different areas of scientific research and industrial production. These data are collected, archived and made publicly available by research data repositories. In addition to meta-data based access, content-based approaches are highly desirable to effectively retrieve, discover and analyze data sets of interest. Several such methods, that allow users to search for particular curve progressions, have been proposed. However, a major challenge when providing content-based access interactive feedback during query formulation has not received much attention yet. This is important because it can substantially improve the user's search effectiveness. In this paper, we present a novel interactive feedback approach for content-based access to multivariate research data. Thereby, we enable query modalities that were not available for multivariate data before. We provide instant search results and highlight query patterns in the result set- Real-time search suggestions give a.11 overview of important patterns to look for in the data repository. For this purpose, we develop a bag-of-words index for multivariate data as the back-end of our approach. We apply our method to a large repository of multivariate data from the climate research domain. We describe a use-case for the discovery of interesting patterns in maritime climate research using our new visual-interactive query tools. Recent research in flow visualization is focusing on the analysis of time-dependent, but mass-less particles. However, in many application scenarios, the mass of particles and their resulting inertia - is essential in understanding fluid mechanics. This includes critical processes, such as dust particles interacting with aircraft (e.g., brownor white-out effects) and particle separation based on density variation. In this paper, we contribute a generalized description of mass-dependent particle trajectories and apply existing unsteady flow visualization methods to the mass-dependent case. This comprises the extension of common concepts, i.e., path lines, streak lines, and time lines. Furthermore, we introduce a new class of integral curves, called mass lines that effectively visualizes mass separation and captures mass-related features in unsteady flow fields that are inaccessible using traditional methods. We demonstrate the applicability of our method, using a number of real-world and artificial data sets, in which mass is a crucial parameter. In particular, we focus on the analysis of brown-out conditions, introduced by a helicopter in forward flight close to the ground. © 2013 The Author(s).

The spinel vanadates have become a model family for exploring orbital order on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice, and recent debate has focused on the symmetry of local crystal fields at the cation sites. Here, we present neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum in FeV2O4, a recent example of a ferrimagnetic spinel vanadate which is available in single-crystal form. We report the existence of two emergent magnon modes at low temperatures, which draw strong parallels with the closely related material, MnV2O4. We were able to reproduce the essential elements of both the magnetic ordering pattern and the dispersion of the inelastic modes with semiclassical spin-wave calculations, using a minimal model that implies a sizable single-ion anisotropy on the vanadium sublattice. Taking into account the direction of ordered spins, we associate this anisotropy with the large trigonal distortion of VO6 octahedra, previously observed via neutron powder diffraction measurements. We further report on the spin gap, which is an order of magnitude larger than that observed in MnV2O4. By looking at the overall temperature dependence, we were able to show that the gap magnitude is largely associated with the ferro-orbital order known to exist on the iron sublattice, but the contribution to the gap from the vanadium sublattice is in fact comparable to what is reported in the Mn compound. This reinforces the conclusion that the spin canting transition is associated with the ordering of vanadium orbitals in this system, and closer analysis indicates closely related physics underlying orbital transitions in FeV2O4 and MnV2O4.

Analyzing sources and causes of error in multi-view scene reconstruction is difficult. In the absence of any ground-truth information, reprojection error is the only valid metric to assess error. Unfortunately, inspecting reprojection error values does not allow computer vision researchers to attribute a cause to the error. A visualization technique to analyze errors in sequential multi-view reconstruction is presented. By computing feature track summaries, researchers can easily observe the progression of feature tracks through a set of frames over time. These summaries easily isolate poor feature tracks and allow the observer to infer the cause of a delinquent track. This visualization technique allows computer vision researchers to analyze errors in ways previously unachieved. It allows for a visual performance analysis and comparison between feature trackers, a previously unachieved result in the computer vision literature. This framework also provides the foundation to a number of novel error detection and correction algorithms.

Large displays are helpful tools for knowledge discovery applications. The increased screen real estate allows for more data to be shown at once. In some cases using virtual reality visualizations helps in creating more useful visualizations. In such settings, traditional input devices are not well-suited. They also do not scale well to multiple users, effectively limiting collaborative knowledge discovery scenarios. Smart phones and tablet computers are becoming increasingly ubiquitous and powerful, even having multi-core CPUs and dedicated Graphic Processing Units (GPUs). Given their built-in sensors they can serve as replacements for currently-used input devices, and provide novel functionality not achieved with traditional devices. Furthermore, their ubiquity ensures that they scale well to multi-user environments, where users can use their own devices. We present an application-independent way to integrate smart phones and tablets into knowledge discovery applications as input devices with additional functionality. This approach is based on Marking Menus, but extends the basic idea by employing the special capabilities of current consumer-level smart phones and tablets. © 2013 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Unprecedented success and active usage of social media services result in massive amounts of user-generated data. An increasing interest in the contained information from social media data leads to more and more sophisticated analysis and visualization applications. Because of the fast pace and distribution of news in social media data it is an appropriate source to identify events in the data and directly display their occurrence to analysts or other users. This paper presents a method for event identification in local areas using the Twitter data stream. We implement and use a combined log-likelihood ratio approach for the geographic and time dimension of real-life Twitter data in predefined areas of the world to detect events occurring in the message contents. We present a case study with two interesting scenarios to show the usefulness of our approach. Copyright 2013 ACM.
