We present a third version of the PraK system designed around an effective text-image and image-image search model. The system integrates sub-image search options for localized context search for CLIP and image color/texture and interfaces tailored to specific task types. A user study shows the benefits of sub-image search in homogeneous video collections. The task of the VAST 2011 Grand Challenge was to investigate potential terrorist activities and their relation to the spread of an epidemic. Three different data sets were provided as part of three Mini Challenges (MCs). MC 1 was about analyzing geo-tagged microblogging (Twitter) messages to characterize the spread of an epidemic. MC 2 required analyzing threats to a computer network using a situational awareness approach. In MC 3 possible criminal and terrorist activities were to be analyzed based on a collection of news articles. To solve the Grand Challenge, insight from each of the individual MCs had to be integrated appropriately. © 2011 IEEE.

Finding the best neural network configuration for a given goal can be challenging, especially when it is not possible to assess the output quality of a network automatically. We present G-Rap, an interactive interface based on Visual Analytics principles for comparing outputs of multiple RNNs for the same training data. We present a novel interactive approach for the visual analysis of intonation contours. Audio data are processed algorithmically and presented to researchers through interactive visualizations. To this end, we automatically analyze the data using machine learning in order to find groups or patterns. These results are visualized with respect to meta-data. We present a flexible, interactive system for the analysis of prosodic data. Using realworld application examples, one containing preprocessed, the other raw data, we demonstrate that our system enables researchers to interact dynamically with the data at several levels and by means of different types of visualizations, thus arriving at a better understanding of the data via a cycle of hypothesis generation and testing that takes full advantage of our visual processing abilities. © NODALIDA *** right reserved.

In this paper we present a novel approach to generate proxy geometry for slice based volume rendering. The basic idea is derived from the behavior of a ray-caster and is a simple extension of the well known 2D object-aligned texture stack based technique. From this our novel scheme inherits the advantage that it enables hardware-based volume rendering for devices that do not support 3D textures. On these devices previous object-aligned 2D texture based approaches suffered from disturbing view angle dependent stack-switching artifacts which are avoided by our novel method. Our approach also shows benefits compared to the widely used view aligned slicing algorithm as it avoids jagged boundary artifacts and increases performance. © The Eurographics Association 2010.

This paper describes the online tool PhonMatrix, which analyzes a word list with respect to the co-occurrence of sounds in a specified context within a word. The co-occurrence counts from the user-specified context are statistically analyzed according to a number of association measures that can be selected by the user. The statistical values then serve as the input for a matrix visualization where rows and columns represent the relevant sounds under investigation and the matrix cells indicate whether the respective ordered pair of sounds occurs more or less frequently than expected. The usefulness of the tool is demonstrated with three case studies that deal with vowel harmony and similar place avoidance patterns. © 2013 Association for Computational Linguistics.

We present a hybrid GPU rendering pipeline for high-resolution textured terrain fields that reduces polygon throughput limitations on the GPU. This pipeline uses rasterization and ray-casting in every frame simultaneously to determine eye ray intersections. It allows shifting workloads flexibly between the triangle setup stage and the parallel execution units, depending on the GPU capacities. We employ a hierarchical tiling of the domain and generate for each tile an errorcontrolled adaptive tessellation of the terrain. In each rendering frame, for each tile the number of triangles representing this tile as well as the number of pixels covered by the tile are determined, and this information is used to select the fastest rendering method on the executing GPU. Compared to pure rasterization or ray-casting, performance gains of a factor between 2 and 4 are demonstrated for high-resolution fields. © 2010 IADIS.

Pixel-based visualizations have become popular, because they are capable of displaying large amounts of data and at the same time provide many details. However, pixel-based visualizations are only effective if the data set is not sparse and the data distribution not random. Single pixels - no matter if they are in an empty area or in the middle of a large area of differently colored pixels - are perceptually difficult to discern and may therefore easily be missed. Furthermore, trends and interesting passages may be camouflaged in the sea of details. In this paper we compare different approaches for visual boosting in pixel-based visualizations. Several boosting techniques such as halos, background coloring, distortion, and hatching are discussed and assessed with respect to their effectiveness in boosting single pixels, trends, and interesting passages. Application examples from three different domains (document analysis, genome analysis, and geospatial analysis) show the general applicability of the techniques and the derived guidelines. © 2011 The Author(s) Journal compilation © 2011 The Eurographics Association and Blackwell Publishing Ltd. In prose literature often complex dynamics of interpersonal relationships can be observed between the different characters. Traditionally, node-link diagrams are used to depict the social network of a novel. However, static graphs can only visualize the overall social network structure but not the development of the networks over the course of the story, while dynamic graphs have the serious problem that there are many sudden changes between different portions of the overall social network. In this paper we explore means to show the relationships between the characters of a plot and at the same time their development over the course of a novel. Based on a careful exploration of the design space, we suggest a new visualization technique called Fingerprint Matrices. A case study exemplifies the usage of Fingerprint Matrices and shows that they are an effective means to analyze prose literature with respect to the development of relationships between the different characters. © 2013 The Author(s).

Dimension reduction is commonly defined as the process of mapping high-dimensional data to a lower-dimensional embedding. Applications of dimension reduction include, but are not limited to, filtering, compression, regression, classification, feature analysis, and visualization. We review methods that compute a point-based visual representation of high-dimensional data sets to aid in exploratory data analysis. The aim is not to be exhaustive but to provide an overview of basic approaches, as well as to review select state-of-the-art methods. Our survey paper is an introduction to dimension reduction from a visualization point of view. Subsequently, a comparison of state-of-the-art methods outlines relations and shared research foci.
