With the mobile phone turning into a lifelogging device alongside with the prevalence of wearables, people are able to record, store, and make sense of their daily activities. Using such insights, applications can help monitor physiological data, motivate behavior change, but also create new ways to aid human memory: mobile devices not only allow us to create records of information, but also present us with proactive reminders and instant access to information relevant to the current situation and context serving as cognition support and for retrospection. This workshop brings together practitioners, designers and researchers with the goal of exploring the requirements, challenges and possibilities of mobile cognition, i.e. how to track activities beyond the physical realm, make sense of that data and feed it back to the user in meaningful ways to augment human cognition.

Many recent methods for perspective shape from shading (SfS) are based on formulations in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs). However, while the quality of such methods steadily improves, their lacking robustness is still an open issue. In this context, variational methods seem to be a promising alternative, since they allow to incorporate smoothness assumptions that have proven to be useful formany other tasks in computer vision. Surprisingly, however, suchmethods have hardly been considered for perspective SfS so far. In our article we address this problem and develop a novel variational model for this task. By combining building blocks of recent PDE-based methods such as a Lambertian reflectance model and camera-centred illumination with a discontinuitypreserving second-order smoothness term, we obtain a variational method for perspective SfS that offers by construction an improved degree of robustness compared to existing PDE-based approaches. Our experiments confirm the success of our strategy. They show that embedding the assumptions of PDE-based approaches into a variational model with a suitable smoothness term can be very beneficial – in particular in scenarios with noise or partially missing information. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Free-hand interaction with large displays is getting more common, for example in public settings and exertion games. Adding haptic feedback offers the potential for more realistic and immersive experiences. While vibrotactile feedback is well known, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has not yet been explored in free-hand interaction with large displays. EMS offers a wide range of different strengths and qualities of haptic feedback. In this paper we first systematically investigate the design space for haptic feedback. Second, we experimentally explore differences between strengths of EMS and vibrotactile feedback. Third, based on the results, we evaluate EMS and vibrotactile feedback with regard to different virtual objects (soft, hard) and interaction with different gestures (touch, grasp, punch) in front of a large display. The results provide a basis for the design of haptic feedback that is appropriate for the given type of interaction and the material.

Over the past years, a number of sensors have emerged, that enable gesture-based interaction with public display applications, including Microsoft Kinect, Asus Xtion, and Leap Motion. In this way, interaction with displays can be made more attractive, particularly if deployed across displays hence involving many users. However, interactive applications are still scarce, which can be attributed to the fact that developers usually need to implement a low-level connection to the sensor. In this work, we tackle this issue by presenting a toolkit, called SenScreen, consisting of (a) easy-to-install adapters that handle the low-level connection to sensors and provides the data via (b) an API that allows developers to write their applications in *** evaluate our approach by letting two groups of developers create an interactive game each using our toolkit. Observation, interviews, and questionnaire indicate that our toolkit simplifies the implementation of interactive applications and may, hence, serve as a first step towards a more widespread use of interactive public displays.

In this paper, we investigate the concept of gaze-based interaction with 3D user interfaces. We currently see stereo vision displays becoming ubiquitous, particularly as autostereoscopy enables the perception of 3D content without the use of glasses. As a result, application areas for 3D beyond entertainment in cinema or at home emerge, including work settings, mobile phones, public displays, and cars. At the same time, eye tracking is hitting the consumer market with low-cost devices. We envision eye trackers in the future to be integrated with consumer devices (laptops, mobile phones, displays), hence allowing the user's gaze to be analyzed and used as input for interactive applications. A particular challenge when applying this concept to 3D displays is that current eye trackers provide the gaze point in 2D only (x and y coordinates). In this paper, we compare the performance of two methods that use the eye's physiology for calculating the gaze point in 3D space, hence enabling gaze-based interaction with stereoscopic content. Furthermore, we provide a comparison of gaze interaction in 2D and 3D with regard to user experience and performance. Our results show that with current technology, eye tracking on stereoscopic displays is possible with similar performance as on standard 2D screens. © 2014 ACM.

Due to advances in technology, displays could replace literally any surface in the future, including walls, windows, and ceilings. At the same time, midair remains a relatively unexplored domain for the use of displays as of today, particularly in public spaces. Nevertheless, we see large potential in the ability to make displays appear at any possible point in space, both indoors and outdoors. Such displays, that we call midair displays, could control large crowds in emergency situations, they could be used during sports for navigation and feedback on performance, or they could be used as group displays which enable information to be brought to the user anytime and anywhere. We explore the concept of midair displays and show that with current technology, for example copter drones, such displays can be easily built.

As public display networks become open, novel types of interaction applications emerge. In particular, we expect applications that support user-generated content to rapidly gain importance, since they provide a tangible benefit for the user in the form of digital bulletin boards, discussion platform that foster public engagement, and applications that allow for self-expression. At the same time, such applications infer several challenges: first, they need to provide suitable means for the passerby to contribute content to the application; second, mechanisms need to be employed that provide sufficient control for the display owner with regard to content moderation; and third, the users' expectations with regard to the posting procedure needs to be well understood. In this paper we present UniDisplay, a research prototype that enables users to post text and images to a public display. We report on the design and development of the application and provide early insights of the deployment in a University setting.

As displays in public space are augmented with sensors, such as the Kinect, they enable passersby to interact with the content on the screen. As of today, feedback on the user action in such environments is usually limited to the visual channel. However, we believe that more immediate and intense forms, in particular haptic feedback, do not only increase the user experience, but may also have a strong impact on user attention and memorization of the content encountered during the interaction. Haptic feedback can today be achieved through vibration on the mobile phone, which is strongly dependent on the location of the device. We envision that fabrics, such as underwear, can in the future be equipped with electrical muscle stimulation, thus providing a more natural and direct way of haptic feedback. In this demo we aim to showcase the potential of applying electrical muscle stimulation as direct haptic feedback during interaction in public spaces in the context of a Kinect-based game for public displays.

Large amounts of multivariate data are collected in different areas of scientific research and industrial production. These data are collected, archived and made publicly available by research data repositories. In addition to meta-data based access, content-based approaches are highly desirable to effectively retrieve, discover and analyze data sets of interest. Several such methods, that allow users to search for particular curve progressions, have been proposed. However, a major challenge when providing content-based access interactive feedback during query formulation has not received much attention yet. This is important because it can substantially improve the user's search effectiveness. In this paper, we present a novel interactive feedback approach for content-based access to multivariate research data. Thereby, we enable query modalities that were not available for multivariate data before. We provide instant search results and highlight query patterns in the result set- Real-time search suggestions give a.11 overview of important patterns to look for in the data repository. For this purpose, we develop a bag-of-words index for multivariate data as the back-end of our approach. We apply our method to a large repository of multivariate data from the climate research domain. We describe a use-case for the discovery of interesting patterns in maritime climate research using our new visual-interactive query tools. High performance computing still typically disregards heterogeneous environments and focuses on homogeneous clusters. While providing advantages and easing development, this fails to address the recent change toward heterogeneous computing infrastructure. With DIANA we presented an abstraction layer for unified access to local compute hardware including different hardware APIs. In this paper we extend DIANA, enabling transparent access to remote hardware. In this context, we demonstrate how to use DIANA for distributed computation and large-scale visualization of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent field in heterogeneous environments. © 2012 IEEE.
