The 2018 Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami severely damaged the coast of Palu City, Indonesia. The city did not have adequate mitigation system for a tsunami. A tsunami inundation map is required. This study based on modelling four scenarios of possible earthquake-induced tsunami. The earthquakes were identified based on data from PUSGEN. The generated tsunami wave is simulated using Delft3D and Delft Dashboard. The wave propagation is modeled using nesting method. This method couples different grid sizes. Nesting process helps to ensure the model efficiency and accuracy. The results provide the maximum inundation map along the Palu City Coast. These results can be used by decision maker to develop the coastal zone management of Palu City. Furthermore, they can be utilized to propose a disaster risk management plan.

Urban in Indonesia, is no longer limited as a center of community settlement. Now the city also functions as a center of government, a central hierarchy, and a center of economic growth. As a logical consequence of the role of cities as a center of growth and economy, urban contributions to national economic growth are increasing. To overcome this problem, a portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system was designed. With the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the dryer will be easily moved and flexible to use. The advantage of portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is the drying process could be done continuously with a little human power. Therefore, this portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is designed to use renewable energy sources. To examine the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the foodstuff was used for a testing of ingredients. The portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system testing show that the amount of water content in the foodstuff reduced, the drying rate accelerate. In addition, the amount of heat energy needed for the drying process also reduced. Hence process of drying foodstuff more efficienct. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The frequency of tsunamis in Indonesia is smaller than other natural disasters. But its destructive power is quite large. Although this disaster has a low probability of occurring. The losses caused by these disaster equaled and even exceeded frequent disasters such as floods and landslides. More than 85% of tsunamis in Indonesia were caused by underwater earthquakes. Thus, mitigation efforts are needed to minimize the impact of the tsunami disaster. The source of the tsunami wave was generated on the Makassar Strait Thrust North Fault. In this study, tsunami was modelled by using Delft3D software. The model approach uses the principle of momentum and continuity. The area of the model was divided into 2 grids. The wave reached the bay mouth in 10 minutes and arrived at the coast of the study area in 20 minutes. The highest peak of water level on the coast occurred in the second wave with an amplitude of 2.45 m and a wave height of 5.19 m. The inundation map was compared to the recorded data from the 2018 tsunami. It was found that there is no significant difference between the two although the tsunami generation were different.

Coastal ecosystems are important destinations for natural and anthropogenic inputs, areas experiencing eutrophication from untreated sewage globally. However, the mechanistic link of how coastal waters and sediments can jointly respond to nutrient enrichment, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), remains relatively unknown. Here, we assessed the interdecadal variability in N and P contents, comparing four surface water sampling sites (∼40-year monthly concentrations) and three ²¹⁰Pb dated sediment cores (∼70-years) in an urban bay that has received increasingly high untreated sewage discharges over the past century (Guanabara Bay, Brazil). Major eutrophication was found, with differences between waters and sediments along sampling sites. The water concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) yielded on average ∼10–45 % and ∼40–190 % higher in 2005–2017 compared to 1980–2005 period in the sampling site most influenced by the denser urban than the conserved area, respectively. Furthermore, 6-year average water concentrations indicated both recent initial decreases in the most urban area, potentially associated with new sanitation facilities, and high increases in those relatively more conserved areas. Conversely, TP and TN sediment burial rates were less sensitive to recent changes as compared to the water concentrations, yielding ∼11 and 31 % between 1980–2005 and 2005–2017, respectively, of which also provided baselines data for earlier periods without direct pelagic measurements (i.e., 1950–1980). Thus, these findings offer new insights into substantial temporal and intra-ecosystem spatial variability of coastal eutrophication, indicating that an integrated analysis between water monitoring and sediment burial is needed to improve the diagnosis and prediction capabilities necessary for effective long-term mitigation of coastal aquatic eutrophication worldwide. © 2023

Shortage of irrigation water supply in dry season prevents many farmers from growing their crops, and the annual benefit from agricultural products will decrease as much as the area of irrigation fields which have lack of water. The objective of this study is to determine the maximum benefit from agricultural products based on water availability, by determining the appropriate cropping pattern and maximum planting areas through linear programming. The case-study location is at Leuwi Kuya Irrigation Region. Planting schedule is selected based on minimum water shortage from simulation of 6 alternative planting schedules. Then, the best pattern of cropping (planting method and the total area) is determined using linear programming. Optimization is carried out in 3 scenarios with various planting methods (conventional and SRI), minimum irrigation water demand (class-area system), and schedule for beginning of the 3-growing seasons annually. Result of this study is the optimal area of the irrigated region that can be planted based on the water availability. The maximum benefit is 89 billion rupiahs, using SRI planting method and distribution of three groups of irrigation fields in water supply schedule. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.

The environment is a combination of two things: resources and hazards. One of the hazards that is a result of environmental changes is the occurrence of natural disasters. Floods are one of the disasters that is feared by people in society. Negative impact of floods is the affected quality of raw water in the flooded area. Polluted water will certainly have a negative impact on the health of the human body. From the explanation above, this article analyzes changes in water quality that occur in flood-affected areas. The utilized method is the empirical legal method, by describing the state of the research subject based on existing conditions and in relation to existing legal regulations. The results obtained from this study showed that irresponsible individuals had committed many violations by building factories on the riverbanks. This causes the river water to overflow and damage buildings, dikes, settlements, and so on. The advice that can be given is to give strict sanctions to people who intentionally or unintentionally violate legal regulations, as well as to build cooperation between society and the government to conserve nature and foster self-awareness to preserve the environment.

Faunus ater is a favoritemollusca that is often found on the Bale River. Local people use these snails as food for consumption along with their main food. Bale River itself is located adjacent to the cement factory, used water washing machines distributed to the river is feared to support the presence of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) metals in the river. This study aims to analyze the relationship of Pb and Zn content in sediments to the content of Pb and Zn in Faunus ater. Data collection was carried out in Februari until April 2018. The relationship between Pb and Zn content in sediments with Pb and Zn content in the body of Faunus ater was analyzed by correlation analysis. The results of the data analysis showed that the metal content of Pb and Zn in sediment and Faunus aterwere found to vary. The highest Pb content in sediment was found at station 2 in March, amounting to 32.87 mg / kg. while the highest Zn content was found at station 1 in March amounting to 84 mg / kg. The relationship of heavy metals Pb and Zn in sediments to the content of Pb and Zn in the body of Faunus ater showed a negative correlation. The conclusion of this study is that there is no correlation between the content of Pb and Zn heavy metals in sediments on the content of lead Pb and Zn in the body of Faunus ater at the Bale Lhoknga River in Aceh Besar District. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In many cities along the Ohio River, levee systems were constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the 1940 to 1960 time frame following the devastating flood of 1937. Typically, gravity storm water drainage pipes penetrate the levees, with accompanying closure devices. Many of the drainage structures used corrugated metal pipe (CMP). In the 1960 to 1980 time frame, USACE constructed a series of new so-called "High Lift" lock and dam facilities, with the result that the original 50 dams on the Ohio River were reduced in number to only 19. In many locations the construction of the higher dams resulted in a permanent and significant raising of the water level of the river adjacent to the levees. Where there was a significant pool level increase, it altered the hydraulic conditions of the storm water drainage structures that penetrated the levees. At some levee locations, USACE modified the drainage structures by raising the pipe elevations and properly removing or abandoning the original pipes to accommodate the change in pool level. However in many cities such forward thinking remedial action was not a responsibility accepted by the Government. As these submerged pipes have aged in the decades after the pool raises, they are generally minimally maintained, and proper inspection becomes challenging. The impacts of the failure of some of these submerged pipes may be significant, depending on the project location, the pipe sizes, and the consequences for the communities involved. Thus levee owners and USACE are currently contending with some of these permanently submerged pipes. This paper will outline the extent of this issue, potential failure modes, the corrosion of submerged metal pipes, issues with underwater inspections, and possible remedial solutions to reduce the risk of potential failure. Several case histories will be presented which will demonstrate by example an important issue that may not be well understood by some levee owners. © Dam Safe

Indonesia is an archipelago that has a wealth of marine fish resources, and the country with the second-longest coastline in the world. The improvement witnessed in the economy of Indonesia in recent years, is as a result of the growth experienced in various sectors, among which is the fisheries and marine. To overcome this problem, a portable conveyor system of moving equipment for fishermen's catches was designed. It can be placed at the dock or port where the fishermen are anchored and unloading the fishermen's catches from the sea. It designed to have the ability to move up and down in the moving frame, making this conveyor system can be used both in high tides and low tides of seawater level conditions. The advantage of this portable conveyor system is could be done continuously with a little human power. Other than that, from the results of the calculations, known that with increasing motor rotation, the required traveling time will only become shorter. The resulting conveyor capacity shows an increase. Also, it can use drive motors that are available on the market with a power capacity of 0.37 kW. Therefore, the process of this portable conveyor system can be more efficient. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.
