The environmental problems related to construction and demolition waste involve their final dis-posal and the use of raw materials. The main goal of this research was to manage on site con-struction and demolition waste and generate concrete for structural purposes by processing concrete and mortar wastes. A Construction and Demolition Waste Management Plan (CDWMP) was developed for this study and applied by means of the implementation of recy-cling procedures. This plan included quantifying wastes and analyzing their generation. The concrete and mortar wastes were separated for recycling to produce concrete in which these wastes, respectively, replaced fractions of coarse aggregate (crushed stone) and fine aggre-gate (sand). Tests were carried out to characterize the resulting concrete and the aggregates used. The strength of the concrete generated varied from 6 MPa to 21.4 MPa, for the same mixture. It was observed that structural concretes can be produced using recycled aggregates, however this cost is higher compared to that of concrete produced with conventional aggre-gates. It was also concluded that despite the cost of concrete production, there were environmental and economic advantages to performing and applying the CDWMP to this specific con-struction site. Microplastics in wastewater and sludge from centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants: Effects of treatment systems and microplastic characteristics

Domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in limiting the release of microplastics (MP) into the environment. This study examined MP removal efficiency from five centralized and four decentralized domestic WWTPs in Bangkok, Thailand. MP concentrations in wastewater and sludge were comparable between centralized and decentralized WWTPs, despite these decentralized WWTPs serving smaller populations and having limited treatment capacity. The elimination of MPs ranged from 50 to 96.8% in centralized WWTPs and 14.2–53.6% in decentralized WWTPs. It is noted that the retained MPs concentrations in sludge ranged from 20,000 to 228,100 MP/kg dry weight. The prevalence of synthetic fibers and fragments could be attributed to their pathways from laundry or car tires, and the accidental release of a variety of plastic wastes ended up in investigated domestic WWTPs. Removal of MPs between the centralized and decentralized WWTPs was influenced by several impact factors including initial MP concentrations, longer retention times, MP fragmentation, and variations of MP concentrations in sludge leading to different activated sludge process configurations. Sewage sludge has become a primary location for the accumulation of incoming microplastics in WWTPs. The MPs entering and leaving each unit process were varied due to the unique characteristics of MPs, and their different treatment efficiencies. While the extended hydraulic retention period in decentralized WWTPs decreased the MP removal efficacy, the centralized WWTP with the two-stage activated sludge process achieved the highest MP removal efficiency. © 2024 The Authors

Faunus ater is a favoritemollusca that is often found on the Bale River. Local people use these snails as food for consumption along with their main food. Bale River itself is located adjacent to the cement factory, used water washing machines distributed to the river is feared to support the presence of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) metals in the river. This study aims to analyze the relationship of Pb and Zn content in sediments to the content of Pb and Zn in Faunus ater. Data collection was carried out in Februari until April 2018. The relationship between Pb and Zn content in sediments with Pb and Zn content in the body of Faunus ater was analyzed by correlation analysis. The results of the data analysis showed that the metal content of Pb and Zn in sediment and Faunus aterwere found to vary. The highest Pb content in sediment was found at station 2 in March, amounting to 32.87 mg / kg. while the highest Zn content was found at station 1 in March amounting to 84 mg / kg. The relationship of heavy metals Pb and Zn in sediments to the content of Pb and Zn in the body of Faunus ater showed a negative correlation. The conclusion of this study is that there is no correlation between the content of Pb and Zn heavy metals in sediments on the content of lead Pb and Zn in the body of Faunus ater at the Bale Lhoknga River in Aceh Besar District. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In full-scale units, the real application of nanoparticles photocatalytic degradation is still challenging due to the requirement of post separation for recovery of fine particles. This work investigated the removal efficiencies of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles coupling with graphene oxide (GO) sheets immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix via solution-casting and a heat-treatment process to achieve the TiO₂/GO/PVA nanocomposite film as a photocatalyst. The operative parameters were focused on initial solution pH value, GO concentration, and heat-treatment time, which subsequently determined the optimal indices for the catalyst film. The structure characterization of the Ti–O–C bond indicated that a strong interaction between GO and TiO₂ had been formed at the hydrolysis process while TiO₂/GO nanoparticles were chemically embedded in PVA matrix by the heat-treatment method. The photocatalytic degradation of PFOS and PFOA produced a nanocomposite film with 25 wt% TiO₂/GO that was treated at 120 °C for 3 h and exhibited a remarkable removal activity in acidic solution with a pH of 3. This condition efficiently degraded PFOS and PFOA by approximately 95.99 % and 96.89 %, respectively, through a photocatalytic reaction. This research presents a straightforward method to synthesize TiO₂/GO/PVA catalyst that influences persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under ultraviolet irradiation, which is of practical significance for environmental applications. © 2024 The Authors

Attracting high school students to college engineering programs has been recognized as a challenge by several engineering organizations. One of the reasons for the low percentage enrolment of high school graduates into engineering programs is that many math/science teachers and counselors lack understanding of engineering applications within the subjects they teach and prospects associated with engineering careers. The instruction at the school level is often criticized for not adequately emphasizing science and mathematics, especially connections with engineering applications. Many students have difficulty connecting math and science courses to common phenomena seen all around and to future careers. This problem is further aggravated on Indian reservations in North Dakota because of their isolated locations and distance from industries. The authors developed a weekend academic program, "Sunday Academy", carried out on four North Dakota Indian reservations, to stimulate Native American students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), to attract to engineering programs, and to engage high school teachers and tribal college instructors in the process of developing engineering and applied science lesson plans. The academy consisted of a series of one-day academic sessions presented monthly to junior and senior high school students. The lesson plans for the sessions were developed collaboratively by a group of university and community college faculty and high school teachers. This project provided unique opportunities for engineering professors to work with high school students directly, to familiarize high school teachers and tribal college instructors with engineering concepts and approaches, and to be knowledgeable about and sensitive to Indian culture. In many flood simulations,critical rainfall duration,defined as duration of rainfall which causes a critical flood,is assumed to be ***,in some area,the critical rainfall duration varies upon its magnitude and assuming the fixed critical rainfall duration may underestimate an extreme peak *** middle and lower Yom basin,Thailand,is one of the areas where a larger flood appears to coincide with longer critical rainfall *** this study,we have investigated the variation of critical rainfall duration in that *** conceptual model was developed from HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS *** upstream and downstream parts of the area were calibrated ***,uniform 2-,5-,and 10-year rainfalls with 24-,48-,and 72-hour durations were *** model successfully reproduced the variation of critical rainfall duration as 48 hours for 2-and 5-year rainfalls and 72 hours for 10-year *** variation is caused by a high percolation rate over the upstream *** this percolation,some portion of rainfall over the upstream part is ***,most of the flood water comes from the downstream part which has short travel ***,when the rainfall is larger,the influence of percolation is less.

Recently, long drought periods and the requirements of large water amounts for urban and agricultural uses have occasioned a high groundwater overexploitation, that is closely related to land subsidence in the Querétaro Metropolitan Zone (QMZ). The urbanized areas around QMZ have experienced a rapid growing period. In this paper we present the results of the spatial precipitation distribution in the QMZ and its potential influence on the processes of land subsidence. Some possible areas were identified where large rainfalls are concentrated. The spatial distribution analysis of precipitation showed that the highest rainfall is localized in the northwest zone of QMZ. The results shows the importance that climate changes can play and the role of anthropogenic conditions in highly urbanized zones for a better understanding of the land subsidence phenomena at the scale of hydrological basins and micro-basins. Irrigation networks play a crucial role in water distribution and food production in agricultural systems and contribute to the overall economy. While studies have examined the effects of organic chemical pollutants, including pesticides, on crop and soil health, there is a lack of research on the overall composition and occurrence of organic chemical contaminants in irrigation water. To this point, there are currently no standardized methods for monitoring contaminants and assessing the transformation and potential toxicity of these compounds in irrigation water distribution systems. In this study, we used liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry to analyze the organic chemical composition of water samples from an irrigation canal and a river that serves as the source of water for the canal. We estimated the relative evaporation rate in the canal as a proxy for residence time by measuring the isotopic ratio of hydrogen and oxygen in the canal water with cavity ring-down spectroscopy. We assessed adverse effects of chemical contaminants in our samples by evaluating the collected water with a high-throughput zebrafish embryonic platform. We evaluated the hazard of annotated chemicals with an assessment tool developed by the US EPA. The canal showed a greater decrease in the abundance of organic contaminants relative to the river as we moved further from the source. Evaporation, a proxy for residence time, was evaluated in the canal and increased after a holding reservoir due to its higher surface area relative to the rest of the canal. This study improves our understanding of the occurrence and degradation of organic chemicals in irrigation networks compared with rivers, and how they may correlate with evaporation and distance. The approach implemented in this study can help build a standardized methodology for monitoring water quality and assessing the potential toxicity of organic contaminants in agricultural irrigation systems. © 2023, The Authors.
