Realizing Generalized Zero-Shot Learning (GZSL) based on large models is emerging as a prevailing trend. However, most existing methods merely regard large models as black boxes, solely leveraging the features output by the final layer while disregarding potential performance enhancements from other layers. Indeed, numerous researchers have visually depicted variations in the features learned across different layers of neural networks. Motivated by this observation, we propose a Vision Transformer (ViT)-based GZSL method named Depth-Aware Multi-Modal ViT (DAM2ViT), which exploits multi-level features of ViT. DAM2ViT incorporates a multi-modal interaction block to align semantic information of categories across multiple layers, thereby augmenting the model’s capacity to learn associations between visual and semantic spaces. Extensive experiments conducted on three benchmark datasets (i.e., CUB, SUN, AWA2) have showcased that DAM2ViT achieves competitive results compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2024 IEEE.

High-resolution point clouds (HRPCD) anomaly detection (AD) plays a critical role in precision machining and high-end equipment manufacturing. Despite considerable 3D-AD methods that have been proposed recently, they still cannot meet the requirements of the HRPCD-AD task. There are several challenges: i) It is difficult to directly capture HRPCD information due to large amounts of points at the sample level;ii) The advanced transformer-based methods usually obtain anisotropic features, leading to degradation of the representation;iii) The proportion of abnormal areas is very small, which makes it difficult to characterize. To address these challenges, we propose a novel group-level feature-based network, called Group3AD, which has a significantly efficient representation ability. First, we design an Intercluster Uniformity Network (IUN) to present the mapping of different groups in the feature space as several clusters, and obtain a more uniform distribution between clusters representing different parts of the point clouds in the feature space. Then, an Intracluster Alignment Network (IAN) is designed to encourage groups within the cluster to be distributed tightly in the feature space. In addition, we propose an Adaptive Group-Center Selection (AGCS) based on geometric information to improve the pixel density of potential anomalous regions during inference. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of our proposed Group3AD, which surpasses Reg3D-AD by the margin of 5% in terms of object-level AUROC on Real3D-AD. Diabetes Mellitus has no permanent cure to date and is one of the leading causes of death globally. The alarming increase in diabetes calls for the need to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. This paper proposes HealthEdge, a machine learning-based smart healthcare framework for type 2 diabetes prediction in an integrated IoT-edge-cloud computing system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between the two most used machine learning algorithms in the literature, Random Forest (RF) and Logistic Regression (LR), using two real-life diabetes datasets. The results show that RF predicts diabetes with 6% more accuracy on average compared to LR. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Retrofitting XoM for Stripped Binaries without Embedded Data Relocation

System programs are frequently coded in memory-unsafe languages such as C/C++, rendering them susceptible to a variety of memory corruption attacks. Among these, just-in-time return-oriented programming (JIT-ROP) stands out as an advanced form of code-reuse attack designed to circumvent code randomization defenses. JIT-ROP leverages memory disclosure vulnerabilities to dynamically harvest reusable code gadgets and construct attack payloads in real-time. To counteract JIT-ROP threats, researchers have developed multiple execute-only memory (XoM) prototypes to prevent dynamic reading and disassembly of memory pages. XoM, akin to the widely deployed W⊕X protection, holds promise in enhancing security. However, existing XoM solutions may not be compatible with legacy and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) programs, or they may require patching the protected binary to separate code and data areas, leading to poor reliability. In addition, some XoM methods have to modify the underlying architectural mechanism, compromising compatibility and performance. In this paper, we present PXoM, a practical technique to seamlessly retrofit XoM into stripped binaries on the x86-64 platform. As handling the mixture of code and data is a well-known challenge for XoM, most existing methods require the strict separation of code and data areas via either compile-time transformation or binary patching, so that the unreadable permission can be safely enforced at the granularity of memory pages. In contrast to previous approaches, we provide a fine-grained memory permission control mechanism to restrict the read permission of code while allowing legitimate data reads within code pages. This novelty enables PXoM to harden stripped binaries but without resorting to error-prone embedded data relocation. We leverage Intel’s hardware feature, Memory Protection Keys, to offer an efficient fine-grained permission control. We measure PXoM’s performance with both micro- and macrobenchmarks, and it only

Communication efficiency is one of the key bottlenecks in Federated Learning (FL). Compression techniques, such as sparsification and quantization, are used to reduce communication overhead. However, joint designs of these techniques under communication constraints are not well-explored. This paper investigates the joint uplink compression problem in communication-constrained FL systems. We propose a Block-TopK sparsification scheme to reduce the proportion of bits used for locating entries of a sparsified vector. Considering the communication constraints, an optimization formulation is proposed to minimize the compression error. By solving the optimization problem, our joint compression method provides a better trade-off between sparsity budget and bit width. Numerical results demonstrate that our approach achieves 99.96% of baseline accuracy with only 1.56% of the baseline communication overhead when training ResNet-18 on CIFAR-10. © 2023 IEEE.

Emission forecasts can be an important way of creating awareness among the public and decision-makers on solving environmental problems. The main goal of this study is to forecast and compare the transport CO2 emissions of the Philippines using four different forecasting models. We use the models of Holt-Winters Exponential Smoothing, Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Vector Autoregressive (VAR), and the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The performance of the different forecasting methods was compared using the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root mean squared error (RMSE) values. Several economic variables from 1990 to 2019 and the transport Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions in the Philippines were utilized in this study. The result show that all four methods exhibit goodness of fit and accuracy results according to the statistical measures. In comparison, the multivariate methods (ANN & VAR) performed better than univariate methods (ARIMA & Holt-Winters).

A Stealthy Wrongdoer: Feature-Oriented Reconstruction Attack against Split Learning

Split Learning (SL) is a distributed learning framework renowned for its privacy-preserving features and minimal computational requirements. Previous research consistently highlights the potential privacy breaches in SL systems by server adversaries reconstructing training data. However, these studies often rely on strong assumptions or compromise system utility to enhance attack performance. This paper introduces a new semi-honest Data Reconstruction Attack on SL, named Feature-Oriented Reconstruction Attack (FORA). In contrast to prior works, FORA relies on limited prior knowledge, specifically that the server utilizes auxiliary samples from the public without knowing any client’s private information. This allows FORA to conduct the attack stealthily and achieve robust performance. The key vulnerability exploited by FORA is the revelation of the model representation preference in the smashed data output by victim client. FORA constructs a substitute client through feature-level transfer learning, aiming to closely mimic the victim client’s representation preference. Leveraging this substitute client, the server trains the attack model to effectively reconstruct private data. Extensive experiments showcase FORA’s superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the paper systematically evaluates the proposed method’s applicability across diverse settings and advanced defense strategies. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Emerging computing paradigms provide field-level service responses for users, for example, edge computing, fog computing, and MEC. Edge virtualization technologies represented by Docker can provide a platform-independent, low-resource-consumption operating environment for edge service. The image-pulling time of Docker is a crucial factor affecting the start-up speed of edge services. The layer reuse mechanism of native Docker cannot fully utilize the duplicate data of node local images. In this paper, we propose a chunk reuse mechanism (CRM), which effectively targets node-local duplicate data during container updates and reduces the volume of data transmission required for image building. We orchestrate the CRM process for cloud and remote-cloud nodes to ensure that the resource overhead from container update data preparation and image reconstruction is within an acceptable range. The experimental results show that the CRM proposed in this paper can effectively utilize the node local duplicate data in the synchronous update of containers in multiple nodes, reduce the volume of data transmission, and significantly improve container update efficiency. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
