In harsh operational conditions, machines lose components on a frequent basis, causing a significant footprint to the surrounding environment. This affects operational up-time, safety measures and cost effectiveness. This paper proposes the use of an integrated RFID-WSN architecture to reduce the footprint of mining equipment used in the Canadian Oil Sands industry. Sensors and RFID tags provide both identification and positioning data for detecting broken parts from Ground Engaging Tools (GETs), such as huge shovel teeth. A delay-tolerant delivery approach utilizes mobile couriers, placed on loading trucks available in the vicinity, to store and carry data from readers and relays to remote base-stations. Delivering data in such harsh mining environments poses several challenges including power scarcity, vast transmission distances and the lack of an accessible communication infrastructure. We provide a use case to demonstrate how this architecture successfully overcomes these challenges within the harsh industrial environment of the Oil Sands.

Biometrics is an effective technology for personnel identity recognition, but uni-modal biometric systems which use a single trait for recognition will suffer from problems like noisy sensor data, non-universality, lack of distinctiveness of the biometric trait, and spoof attacks. These problems can be tackled by using multi-biometrics in the system. Hand-based person recognition provides a reliable, low-cost and user-friendly viable solution for a range of access control applications. As one of the most popular biometric traits, fingerprints (FP) are widely used in personal recognition. However, a novel hand-based biometric feature, Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP), has attracted an increasing amount of attention. In this paper, FP and FKP are integrated in order to construct an efficient multi-biometric recognition system based on matching score level and image level fusion. In this study we use the minimum average correlation energy (MACE) and Unconstrained MACE (UMACE) filters in conjunction with two correlation plane performance measures, max peak value and peak-to-sidelobe ratio, to determine the effectiveness of this method. The experimental results showed that the designed system achieves an excellent recognition rate on the Hong Kong polytechnic university (PolyU) FKP and high resolution fingerprint database.

Photonic crystals realized in LiNbO 3 have a great potential to reduce the size and increase the functionality of integrated optical devices. In order to accomplish these aims, fabrication know-how must be mastered yet it remains relatively uncharted. In this work we report the fabrication and optical characterization of photonic crystal structures in annealed proton exchanged (APE) LiNbO 3 waveguides. In our work, channel waveguides were fabricated by photolithography patterning followed by immersing LiNbO 3 wafers in molten benzoic acid at 235°C for 5 h. The thickness and the composition profiles of the APE waveguides were measured using the secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) method. The experimental characterization of the photonic crystal waveguides was performed and a photonic stop band with good sharpness can be observed from the transmission spectra.

Fighting shots are the highlights of action movies and an effective approach to discriminating fighting shots is very useful for many applications, such as movie trailer construction, movie content filtering, and movie content retrieval. In this paper, we present a novel method for this task. Our approach first extracts the reliable motion information of local invariant features through a robust keypoint tracking computation; then foreground keypoints are distinguished from background keypoints by a sophisticated voting process; further, the parameters of the camera motion model is computed based on the motion information of background keypoints, and this model is then used as a reference to compute the actual motion of foreground keypoints; finally, the corresponding feature vectors are extracted to characterizing the motions of foreground keypoints, and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier is trained based on the extracted feature vectors to discriminate fighting shots. Experimental results on representative action movies show our approach is very effective.

We present a new concept of quantum cryptography using dark-bright soliton conversion behaviors within a nonlinear ring resonator, in which the orthogonal soliton is established among the soliton conversion. A new model of add/drop filters is modified which is known as a PANDA Ring resonator is proposed. The entangled soliton(photon) can work in the same way of the entangled photon, but in this case the entangle soliton is gained more power that give the advantage of long distance quantum communication. Most of the existing work about fairness verification was carried out by checking the fairness based on state, action, or process respectively. It is hard to resolve the fairness issue for complex software systems, especially in life-critical systems and safety-critical systems. In this paper, we verify the fairness based on both state and action, which is realized mainly by introducing an extended Kripke structure and four kinds of fairness (weak global/local fairness and strong global/local fairness). The experimental results show the superiority of our method by the savings in memory (2.08%) and time consumption (26.45%).

Biometrics technology has been attracting extensive attention from researchers of personal authentication due to the ever growing demand on access control, public security, forensics and e-banking. Diverse biometric systems have been now widely used in various applications. The palmprint is most popular modality that has the largest shares in the biometrics market. In this paper, an efficient online personal identification system based on palmprint is proposed. Firstly, the palmprint is filtered by the Gabor filter. The real and imaginary responses of the filtering are used to create three different feature vectors. Subsequently, the Hidden Markov Model (HMM), the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) are used for modeling and so for classifying the feature vectors. The results of the three classifiers are combined using matching score level fusion strategy. The proposed system is tested and evaluated using PolyU 2D and 3D palmprint database of 250 persons. The obtained experimental results show that the system yields the best performance for identifying palmprint and it is able to provide the highest degree of biometrics-based system security.
