Hybrid uniform distribution of particle swarm optimizer

Particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is a stochastic global optimization technique based on a social interaction metaphor. Because of the complexity, dynamics and randomness involved in PSO, it is hard to theoretically analyze the mechanism on which PSO depends. Statistical results have shown that the probability distribution of PSO is a truncated triangle, with uniform probability across the middle that decreases on the sides. The "truncated triangle" is also called the "Maya pyramid" by Kennedy. However, very little is known regarding the sampling distribution of PSO in itself. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the "Maya pyramid" without any assumption and derive its computational formula, which is actually a hybrid uniform distribution that looks like a trapezoid and conforms with the statistical results. Based on the derived density function of the hybrid uniform distribution, the search strategy of PSO is defined and quantified to characterize the mechanism of the search strategy in PSO. In order to show the significance of these definitions based, on the derived hybrid uniform distribution, the comparison between the defined search strategies of the classical, linear decreasing weight based PSO and the canonical constricted PSO suggested by Clerc is illustrated and elaborated. GPUs are many-core processors with tremendous computational power. However, as automatic parallelization has not been realized yet, developing high-performance parallel code for GPUs is still very challenging. The paper presents a novel translation framework designed for virtual execution environment based on CPU/GPU architecture. It addresses two major challenges of taking advantage of general purpose computation on graphics processing units (GPGPU) to improve performance: no rewriting the existing source code and resolving binary compatibility issues between different GPUs. The translation framework uses semi-automatic parallelization technology to port existing code to explicitly parallel programming models. It not only offers a mapping strategy from X86 platform to CUDA programming model, but also synchronizes the execution between the CPU and the GPUs. The input to our translation framework is parallelizable part of the program within binary code. With an additional information related to the parallelizable part, the translation framework transforms the sequential code into PTX code and execute it on GPUs. Experimental results on several programs from CUDA SDK Code Samples and Parboil Benchmark Suite show that our translation framework could achieve very high performance, even up to several tens of times speedup over the X86 native version.

Measurement based quantum computation, which requires only single particle measurements on a universal resource state to achieve the full power of quantum computing, has been recognized as one of the most promising models for the physical realization of quantum computers. Despite considerable progress in the past decade, it remains a great challenge to search for new universal resource states with naturally occurring Hamiltonians and to better understand the entanglement structure of these kinds of states. Here we show that most of the resource states currently known can be reduced to the cluster state, the first known universal resource state, via adaptive local measurements at a constant cost. This new quantum state reduction scheme provides simpler proofs of universality of resource states and opens up plenty of space to the search of new resource states.

Certificateless cryptography eliminates the key escrow problem in identity-based cryptography. Hierarchical cryptography exploits a practical security model to mirror the organizational hierarchy in the real world. In this paper, to incorporate the advantages of both types of cryptosystems, we instantiate hierarchical certificate less cryptography by formalizing the notion of hierarchical certificate less signatures. Furthermore, we propose an HCLS scheme which, under the hardness of the computational Diffie-Hellman (CDH) problem, is proven to be existentially unforgeable against adaptive chosen-message attacks in the random oracle model. As to efficiency, our scheme has constant complexity, regardless of the depth of the hierarchy. Hence, the proposal is secure and scalable for practical applications.

With the spread use of the computers, a new crime space and method are presented for criminals. Thus computer evidence plays a key part in criminal cases. Traditional computer evidence searches require that the computer specialists know what is stored in the given computer. Binary-based information flow tracking which concerns the changes of control flow is an effective way to analyze the behavior of a program. The existing systems ignore the modifications of the data flow, which may be also a malicious behavior. Thus the function recognition is introduced to improve the information flow tracking. Function recognition is a helpful technique recognizing the function body from the software binary to analyze the binary code. And that no false positive and no false negative in our experiments strongly proves that our approach is effective.

In the paper, we classify cancer with the Leukemia cancer of medical diagnostic data. information gain has been adapted for feature selections. A Leukemia cancer model that utilizes information Gain based on Support Vector Machines (IG-SVM) techniques and enhancements to evaluate, interpret the cancer classification. The experimental results indicate that the SVM model illustrates the highest accuracy of classifications for Leukemia cancer.

We construct new families of multi-error-correcting quantum codes for the amplitude damping channel. Our key observation is that, with proper encoding, two uses of the amplitude damping channel simulate a quantum erasure channel. This allows us to use concatenated codes with quantum erasure-correcting codes as outer codes for correcting multiple amplitude damping errors. Our new codes are degenerate stabilizer codes and have parameters which are better than the amplitude damping codes obtained by any previously known construction.

Using a performance-based skeleton to implement divisible load applications on grid computing environments

Applications with divisible loads have such a rich source of parallelism that their parallelization can significantly reduce their total completion time on grid computing environments. However, it is a challenge for grid users, probably scientists and engineers, to develop their applications which can exploit the computing power of the grid. We propose a performance-based skeleton algorithm for implementing divisible load applications on grids. Following this skeleton, novice grid programmers can easily develop a high performance grid application. To examine the performance of programs developed by this approach, we apply this skeleton to implement three kinds of applications and conduct experiments on our grid test-bed. Experimental results show that programs implemented by this approach run more rapidly than those using conventional scheduling schemes.

Background: It has been apparent in the last few years that small non coding RNAs (ncRNA) play a very significant role in biological regulation. Among these microRNAs (miRNAs), 22-23 nucleotide small regulatory RNAs, have been a major object of study as these have been found to be involved in some basic biological processes. So far about 706 miRNAs have been identified in humans alone. However, it is expected that there may be many more miRNAs encoded in the human genome. In this report, a "context-sensitive" Hidden Markov Model (CSHMM) to represent miRNA structures has been proposed and tested extensively. We also demonstrate how this model can be used in conjunction with filters as an ab initio method for miRNA identification. Results: The probabilities of the CSHMM model were estimated using known human miRNA sequences. A classifier for miRNAs based on the likelihood score of this "trained" CSHMM was evaluated by: (a) cross-validation estimates using known human sequences, (b) predictions on a dataset of known miRNAs, and (c) prediction on a dataset of non coding RNAs. The CSHMM is compared with two recently developed methods, miPred and CID-miRNA. The results suggest that the CSHMM performs better than these methods. In addition, the CSHMM was used in a pipeline that includes filters that check for the presence of EST matches and the presence of Drosha cutting sites. This pipeline was used to scan and identify potential miRNAs from the human chromosome 19. It was also used to identify novel miRNAs from small RNA sequences of human normal leukocytes obtained by the Deep sequencing (Solexa) methodology. A total of 49 and 308 novel miRNAs were predicted from chromosome 19 and from the small RNA sequences respectively Conclusion: The results suggest that the CSHMM is likely to be a useful tool for miRNA discovery either for analysis of individual sequences or for genome scan. The Aircraft Landing Scheduling (ALS) problem is a typical hard multi-constraint optimization problem. In real applications, it is not most important to find the best solution but to provide a feasible landing schedule in an acceptable time. We propose a novel approach which can effectively solve the ALS while satisfying the real-time need. It consists of two steps: (i) Use CA to simulate the landing process in the terminal airspace and to find a considerably good landing sequence;(ii) a simple Genetic Algorithm associated with a Relaxation Operator is used to obtain a better result based on the CA result. Experiments have shown that our method is much faster and suitable for real-time ALS problem compared with traditional optimization methods. For all the 13 data sets, the proposed approach can find satisfactory solutions in less than 2 seconds. Copyright 2009 ACM.
