The co-allocation architecture was developed in order to enable parallel downloading of datasets from multiple servers. Several co-allocation strategies have been coupled and used to exploit rate differences among various client-server links and to address dynamic rate fluctuations by dividing files into multiple blocks of equal sizes. However, a major obstacle, the idle time of faster servers having to wait for the slowest server to deliver the final block, makes it important to reduce differences in finishing time among replica servers. In this paper, we propose a dynamic coallocation scheme, namely Recursive-Adjustment Co-Allocation scheme, to improve the performance of data transfer in Data Grids. Our approach reduces the idle time spent waiting for the slowest server and decreases data transfer completion time. We also provide an effective scheme for reducing the cost of reassembling data blocks. Copyright 2006 ACM.

One of the features of the system is resident participation. The GIS layer structure proposed in this paper nicely supports this user participation. We present a novel approach to conserve power in networked mobile devices. Our approach exploits communication within a pervasive smart space as an opportunity to save power as opposed to the classic view of communication as a drain on resources. We outsource intensive computations to the network whenever a pervasive connection to the Internet exists and when it pays off to do so. At compile-time our approach generates two versions of the program being compiled, a client version and a server version, each containing the necessary code to handle the run-time decision of executing code locally on the mobile device or remotely to the server based on power efficiency. We utilize a technique from real-time systems to help the compiler generate highly accurate code by calculating the number of loop iterations for each candidate section of code. This approach has the advantage of analyzing applications at a finer granularity than other similar methodologies. This is because the candidate code sections are CPU blocks represented mostly by loops. Our experimental results performed on Intel's XScale architecture and the Wi-Fi wireless technology show significant savings in power consumption by the mobile device

As grid computing becomes a reality, a resource broker is needed to manage and monitor available resources. This work presents a workflow-based computational resource broker whose main function is to match available resources with user requests and consider network information status during matchmaking. The resource broker provides a uniform interface for accessing available and the appropriate resources via user credentials. We utilize the NWS tool to monitor the network-related information and resources status. Also, we constructed a grid platform using Globus Toolkit that integrates the distributed resources of five universities in Taichung, Taiwan, where the resource broker is developed. In this paper, we describe our research activity on the integration of technologies in the environment of aging people who would benefit from using adapted systems and accessible environment to compensate, even partly, problems of daily activities. The paper focuses on the concept of a smart house in the box, which is an idea of creating a smart house that needs a minimum engineering expertise, that does not require a significant system integration phase, and which reduce the cost of deployment. The paper describes our method that enables an easy integration and management of assistive space. It discusses the method of an automatic self-integration of devices in the house, including mechanisms of describing/identifying devices, mechanisms of sensing/detecting device and the mechanisms of installing devices.
