The Data Grid enables the sharing, selection, and connection of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational and storage resources for solving large-scale data intensive scientific applications. Such technology efficiently manage and transfer terabytes or even petabytes of data for data-intensive, high-performance computing applications in wide-area, distributed computing environments. Replica selection process allows an application to choose a replica from replica catalog, based on its performance and data access features. In this paper, we build a Grid environment based on three existing PC Cluster environments and perform performance analysis of data transfers using GridFTP protocol over these systems. In addition, based on experimental results, it is proposed a cost model to pick the best replica, in real and dynamic network situations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In order to identify and schedule jobs that are suitable for determined resources, an execution time estimation model is required. In this paper, it is described a Chronological history-based execution time estimation model to predict current execution time, according to the previous execution results. We built a heterogeneous computational Grid environment using Globus Toolkit, and our research is focused in Grid computing environments and to execute parallel jobs on multiple resources by measuring its accuracy. The experimental results shown that our model can accurately predict the execution time of embarrassingly parallel applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In this paper, we investigate the recent popular computing technique called Grid computing, and use video conversion and 3D rendering applications to demonstrate this technology's effectiveness and high performance. We also report on developing a resource broker called Phantom that runs on our grid computing testbed and whose main function is querying nodes in grid computing environments and showing their system information to aid in selecting the best nodes for job assignments to have the jobs executed in the least amount of time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The computing power provided by high performance low-cost PC-based Cluster and Grid platforms are attractive, and they are equal or superior to supercomputers and mainframes widely available. In this research paper, we present the design rationale and implementation of Visuel, a toolkit for performance measurement and analysis of MPI parallel programs and real time resources monitoring in cluster and grid computing environments. The proposed toolkit is web-based interface to show performance activities of all computing nodes involved in the execution of a MPI parallel program, such as CPU and memory usage levels of each computing node, and monitors all computing nodes of a computing platform by displaying real time performance data. In addition, this toolkit is able to display comparative performance data charts of multiple executions of MPI parallel application under investigation, which facilitates the "what-if" analysis. The usage of this toolkit shows that it outperforms in easing the process of investigation of parallel applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Efficient loop scheduling on parallel and distributed systems depends mostly on load balancing, especially on heterogeneous PC-based cluster and grid computing environments, In this paper, a general approach, named Performance-Based Parallel Loop Self-Scheduling (PPLSS), was given to partition workload according to performance of grid nodes. This approach was applied to three types of application programs, which were executed on a testbed grid. Experimental results showed that our approach could execute efficiently for most scheduling parameters when estimation of node performance was accurate. © IFIP International Federation for information Processing 2005.

Effective loop-scheduling can significantly reduce the total execution time of a program on grid environments, especially for loop-intensive applications. This paper describes a two-phased method, named HPLS (Hybrid Parallel Loop Scheduling), to dynamically schedule loop iterations of a program on grid environments. In the first phase, most of the workload is dispatched to each node for execution according to its performance. Then, some well-known self-scheduling scheme is utilized to schedule the remaining workload. Experimental results showed that in most cases our approach could produce more efficient scheduling than previous schemes on our testbed grid. In addition, the results suggest that our approach is suitable for loop scheduling on grid environments. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, knowledge has been accumulating at a tremendous speed. The amount of global books, literature, and data available has increased in astounding quantities. The traditional library service system is no longer able to meet the requirements of the present reality. With the development of Internet and rapid advancement of information technology, a totally new knowledge transfer model has been developed: Books and other forms of data (including text, voice and images) are digitized and then provided to readers by way of a more convenient method, in order to search for and obtain the exact content they need from libraries. We propose a concept for a Global Digital Library Grid. This digital library organization would not only include new members (new libraries or new museums) but be flexible enough not to affect the systems and framework of the original Grid member. As the organization grows, it will form an enormous Virtual Grid Digital Library to provide readers with speedy Knowledge Service that meets their requirements.

In this paper, we present our Grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, we show that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the Grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, Grid roles can be categorized into three types. It is our goal, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To, fulfill our architecture, we first apply an existing parallel decision tree algorithm (the SPRINT algorithm) to the Grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development. © 2005 IEEE.

Internet computing and grid technologies promise to change the way we tackle complex problems. They will enable large-scale aggregation and sharing of computational, data and other resources across institutional boundaries. As Grid computing is becoming a reality, there is a need for managing and monitoring the available resources worldwide, ax well as the need for conveying these resources to the everyday user. This paper describes a resource broker with its main function as to match the available resources to the user's needs. The use of the resource broker provides a uniform interface to access any of the available and appropriate resources using user's credentials. The resource broker runs on top of the Globus Toolkit. Therefore, it provides security and current information about the available resources and serves as a link to the diverse systems available in the Grid. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance. © 2005 IEEE.
