Over the past decade, speed in the transmission of knowledge is no longer the way it used to be. Due to this influence, conventional educational methodology has also followed this trend and has gone through a momentous transformation. An excellent example is e-learning which has achieved and broken through the restrictions of time and space. In recent years it has become one of the most popular teaching methods. SCORM (Sharable Course Object Reference Model) the most popular e-learning standard has been adapted from many differing e-learning platforms. Normally, courseware meeting SCORM standards is sharable with other e-learning platforms. Most e-learning platforms however are unable to share courseware directly on the Internet. With this in mind, we have employed one type of grid computing technology called "data grid" in order to achieve this. This technology allows the integration of different SCORM platforms into a huge e-learning environment.

In this paper, we introduce our experiments on SLIM and DRBL diskless PC clusters. We constructed them by using 16 machines and only one disk. We run the matrix multiplication and bioinformatics software to evaluate their performance. We find that the performance of SLIM has a great improvement, and the system setup time is much less than before. The network loading of DRBL is also very high. The system boot-up time is no difference between these two systems. The best way to construct the diskless Linux cluster is to eliminate the image size. It can make the nodes have more memory space to handle the program and ease the network loading.

In this paper, we present a novel approach to solving the supervised dimensionality reduction problem by encoding an image object as a general tensor of 2nd or higher order. First, we propose a Discriminant Tensor Criterion (DTC), whereby multiple interrelated lower-dimensional discriminative subspaces are derived for feature selection. Then, a novel approach called k-mode Cluster-based Discriminant Analysis is presented to iteratively learn these subspaces by unfolding the tensor along different tensor dimensions. We call this algorithm Discriminant Analysis with Tensor Representation (DATER), which has the following characteristics: 1) multiple interrelated subspaces can collaborate to discriminate different classes;2) for classification problems involving higher-order tensors, the DATER algorithm can avoid the curse of dimensionality dilemma and overcome the small sample size problem;and 3) the computational cost in the learning stage is reduced to a large extent owing to the reduced data dimensions in generalized eigenvalue decomposition. We provide extensive experiments by encoding face images as 2nd or 3rd order tensors to demonstrate that the proposed DATER algorithm based on higher order tensors has the potential to outperform the traditional subspace learning algorithms, especially in the small sample size cases. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance.

Cluster and grid computing is a relatively new interdisciplinary field, where computer science, engineering and computational biology are its core supporting disciplines. The rise of cluster and grid computing discipline brings to computer science faculty members new opportunities and challenges, both in education and in research. In this paper, we explore issues in teaching cluster and grid computing, the developing of curricula, and thoughts to foster student to work on research projects in cluster and grid computing.

In this paper, the authors presented the grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, it is shown that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, grid roles can be categorized into three types. It was aimed, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To fulfill the architecture, an existing parallel decision tree algorithm was first applied (the SPRINT algorithm) to the grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development.

The computing power provided by high performance and low cost PC-based clusters and grid computing platforms are attractive and they are equal or superior to supercomputers and mainframes. In parallel, discussions on how to obtain more computing power from these computing platforms become an interesting issue. The development of applications for these high-performance computing platforms is complicated for several reasons: the complexity of applications themselves, which combines aspects of super computing and distributed computing, and by the need to achieve higher performance. This paper describes the design rationale and implementation of a parallel programming web-based toolkit, to ease the parallel programming learning process, with the use of web-based interface. The toolkit has widely been used in MPI parallel programming courses (both in graduate and undergraduate levels) and industry trainings.

Novel video caption detection approach using multi-frame integration

Captions in videos often play an important role in video information indexing and retrieval. In this paper, a novel video caption detection approach is presented. This approach first applies a new multiple frames integration (MFI) method to reduce the complexity of the background of the image. A time-based minimum (or maximum) pixel value search is employed and a Sobel edge map is used to determine the mode of search. Then block-based text detection is performed, i.e. a small window is used to scan the image and classified as text or non-text, using Sobel edges as features. A two-level pyramid is applied to detect various text sizes. Finally, the approach presents a new iterative text line decomposition method, and accurate text bounding boxes are extracted from the candidate text areas. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves a high precision and recall.

On the field of battle, a continual flow of information is necessary to achieve information superiority. The required information potentially originates from numerous information producers. Unfortunately, due to dynamic and often dangerous conditions, these information producers can be incapacitated or destroyed. To be successful, a battlefield information system must provide a continuous flow of information and thus adaptability and fault tolerance are key features. In this paper, we show how we build adaptive and fault tolerance information systems using an organizational model. We introduce our organizational model and provide details pertaining to its use in the development of a battlefield information system.
