HealthEdge: A Machine Learning-Based Smart Healthcare Framework for Prediction of Type 2 Diabetes in an Integrated IoT, Edge, and Cloud computing System

Diabetes Mellitus has no permanent cure to date and is one of the leading causes of death globally. The alarming increase in diabetes calls for the need to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. This paper proposes HealthEdge, a machine learning-based smart healthcare framework for type 2 diabetes prediction in an integrated IoT-edge-cloud computing system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between the two most used machine learning algorithms in the literature, Random Forest (RF) and Logistic Regression (LR), using two real-life diabetes datasets. The results show that RF predicts diabetes with 6% more accuracy on average compared to LR.

In this paper, we explore the low-complexity optimal bilinear equalizer (OBE) combining scheme design for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output networks with spatially correlated Rician fading *** provide a spectral efficiency (SE) performance analysis framework for both the centralized and distributed processing schemes with bilinear equalizer (BE)-structure combining schemes applied. The BE-structured combining is a set of schemes that are constructed by the multiplications of channel statistics-based BE matrices and instantaneous channel estimates. Notably, we derive closed-form achievable SE expressions for centralized and distributed BE-structured combining schemes. We propose one centralized and two distributed OBE schemes: Centralized OBE (C-OBE), Distributed OBE based on Global channel statistics (DG-OBE), and Distributed OBE based on Local channel statistics (DL-OBE), which maximize their respective SE expressions. OBE matrices in these schemes are tailored based on varying levels of channel statistics. Notably, we obtain new and insightful closed-form results for the C-OBE, DG-OBE, and DL-OBE combining schemes. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed OBE schemes can achieve excellent SE, even in scenarios with severe pilot contamination. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.

Active legibility in multiagent reinforcement learning

A multiagent sequential decision problem has been seen in many critical applications including urban transportation, autonomous driving cars, military operations, etc. Its widely known solution, namely multiagent reinforcement learning, has evolved tremendously in recent years. Among them, the solution paradigm of modeling other agents attracts our interest, which is different from traditional value decomposition or communication mechanisms. It enables agents to understand and anticipate others' behaviors and facilitates their collaboration. Inspired by recent research on the legibility that allows agents to reveal their intentions through their behavior, we propose a multiagent active legibility framework to improve their performance. The legibility-oriented framework drives agents to conduct legible actions so as to help others optimize their behaviors. In addition, we design a series of problem domains that emulate a common legibility-needed scenario and effectively characterize the legibility in multiagent reinforcement learning. The experimental results demonstrate that the new framework is more efficient and requires less training time compared to several multiagent reinforcement learning algorithms. © 2025 The Author(s)

The collaborative inference systems are designed to speed up the prediction processes in edge-cloud scenarios, where the local devices and the cloud system work together to run a complex deep-learning model. However, those edge-cloud collaborative inference systems are vulnerable to emerging reconstruction attacks, where malicious cloud service providers are able to recover the edge-side users' private data. To defend against such attacks, several defense countermeasures have been recently introduced. Unfortunately, little is known about the robustness of those defense countermeasures. In this paper, we take the first step towards measuring the robustness of those state-of-the-art defenses with respect to reconstruction attacks. Specifically, we show that the latent privacy features are still retained in the obfuscated representations. Motivated by such an observation, we design a technology called Sensitive Feature Distillation (SFD) to restore sensitive information from the protected feature representations. Our experiments show that SFD can break through defense mechanisms in model partitioning scenarios, demonstrating the inadequacy of existing defense mechanisms as a privacy-preserving technique against reconstruction attacks. We hope our findings inspire further work in improving the robustness of defense mechanisms against reconstruction attacks for collaborative inference systems.

SCR-Auth: Secure Call Receiver Authentication on Smartphones Using Outer Ear Echoes

Receiving calls is one of the most universal functions of smartphones, involving sensitive information and critical operations. Unfortunately, to prioritize convenience, the current call receiving process bypasses smartphone authentication mechanisms (e.g., passwords, fingerprint recognition, and face recognition), leaving a significant security gap. To address this issue, we propose SCR-Auth, a secure call receiver authentication scheme for smartphones that leverages outer ear echoes. It sends inaudible acoustic signals through the earpiece speaker to actively sense the call receiver’s outer ear structure and records the resulting echoes using the top microphone. These echoes are then analyzed to extract unique outer ear biometric information for authentication. It operates implicitly, without requiring extra hardware or imposing additional burden. Comprehensive experiments conducted under diverse conditions demonstrate SCR-Auth’s effectiveness and security, showing an average balanced accuracy of 96.95% and resilience against potential attacks. In this paper, the problem of using several controlled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to localize a target UAV in real time is investigated. In the considered model, the controlled UAV consists of one active UAV and four passive UAVs. Each passive UAV receives signals transmitted from the active UAV and reflected by the target UAV, and then estimates the distance from the active UAV to the target UAV and then from the target UAV to the passive UAV. Each passive UAV then transmits this distance information to a base station (BS), which estimates the location of the target UAV. Since the target UAV will change its location according to its performed task, each controlled UAV must optimize its trajectory to continuously localize the target UAV. This trajectory design problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to jointly optimize the trajectories of active and passive UAVs so as to maximize the target UAV positioning accuracy. To solve this problem, a Z function decomposition based reinforcement learning (ZD-RL) method is proposed. Compared to value function decomposition based RL (VD-RL), the proposed method can find the probability distribution of the sum of future rewards to accurately estimate the expected value of the sum of future rewards, thus finding better trajectories for controlled UAVs and improving target UAV positioning accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed ZD-RL method can reduce the positioning errors by up to 58.3% and 84.8%, compared to VD-RL and independent DRL methods, respectively.

With the rising demand for intelligent services and privacy protection in consumer artificial intelligence (AI), federated edge learning has emerged as a beacon for privacy-preserving distributed machine learning. This non-centralized approach offers distinct data privacy advantages, making it especially suitable for applications with strict privacy policies, such as consumer-centric healthcare systems. However, consumer electronics/devices in federated edge learning might unlawfully violate model ownership by duplicating or distributing models. Another concern is that a central server, if compromised, can become a conduit for model leakage, whether for profit motives or due to external intrusions, thus exacerbating the model ownership violation. To our knowledge, few works have focused on model ownership protection for federated edge learning in the consumer-centric healthcare domain. In this paper, we introduce a federated model ownership protection (FedMOP) approach. FedMOP is a model ownership safeguard and a formidable fortress built upon two core innovations. First, FedMOP can swiftly embed and replace watermarks during local training, allowing for the accurate identification and subsequent flagging of deceitful consumer devices. Second, FedMOP ensures that the server only accesses encrypted versions of the federated model, keeping the model a secret. Extensive evaluations demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of FedMOP. We hope that FedMOP can light the way for surmounting similar ethical challenges in the broader realm of consumer-edge AI. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has become an ideal medium for long-term storage and retrieval due to its extremely high storage density and long-term stability. But access efficiency is an existing bottleneck in DNA storage, especially the lack of high-quality random access address sequences. Therefore, in this paper, we report a series of approaches based on k-weakly mutually uncorrelated (k-WMU) codes to design the address sequence to improve the access efficiency of DNA storage. To address the problem of DNA sequences that are poorly scalable at the base level, we propose a 0-m-ruling coding scheme combined with k-WMU codes that can make address sequences avoid generating secondary structure with stem lengths ranging from 3 to 9. Based on the decoupled structure, We further extend the k-WMU codes with error correction function while satisfying combinatorial biological constraints. In order to investigate the performance of the designed address sequences for real-world applications, we perform simulation experiments based on thermodynamic properties and error correction capability as well as compared the minimum free energy (MFE), melting temperature (TM), and average decoding success rate (ADSR) with previous work. The results show that designed address sequences have a high MFE value and ADSR and a substantial reduction in TM-variance while satisfying the combinatorial biological constraints. As the quality of address sequences improves, this will help to achieve accurate random access as well as enhance the robustness of the DNA storage system. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

In this paper, the problem of joint sensing and communications is studied over terahertz (THz) vehicular networks. In the studied model, a set of service provider vehicles provide either communication service or sensing service to communication target vehicles or sensing target vehicles, respectively. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the service mode (i.e., providing sensing or communication service) for each service provider vehicle and the subset of target vehicles that each service provider vehicle will serve. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem aiming to maximize the sum of the data rates of all communication target vehicles while satisfying the sensing service requirements of all sensing target vehicles by determining the service mode and the user association for each service provider vehicle. To solve this problem, a graph neural network (GNN) based algorithm with a heterogeneous graph representation is proposed. The proposed algorithm enables the central controller to extract each vehicle's graph information related to its location, connection, and communication interference. Using the extracted graph information, the joint service mode selection and user association strategy will be determined. Simulation results show that the proposed GNN-based scheme can achieve 94% of the sum rate produced by the optimal solution, and yield up to 3.95% and 36.16% improvements in sum rate, respectively, compared to a homogeneous GNN-based algorithm and the conventional optimization algorithm without using GNNs.

The mission of cloth-changing person re-identification (CC-ReID) is to discover cloth-invariant and identity-related cues, while traditional person ReID methods rely on appearance features that are biased to cloth-related cues. To tackle this cloth-biased problem, many CC-ReID methods introduced auxiliary body shape information to extract cloth-invariant features, such as 2D sketch images or the 3D Skinned Multi-Person Linear (SMPL) model. However, 2D auxiliary information lacks 3D spatial features, while the 3D SMPL model encounters challenges in capturing features at a finer granularity due to manually defined parameters. To extract fine-grained 3D shape features, we estimate depth maps that contain richer shape information and propose a Fine-grained Depth feature Mining and Distillation (FDMD) framework. We introduce a depth branch and design a fine-grained local feature interaction module to mine fine-grained 3D body shape knowledge from estimated depth maps by exploring the context of semantic-aware local body-part features. To integrate cloth-invariant depth knowledge into the appearance features, the fine-grained 3D shape features are transferred to an appearance branch by feature-space-aligned distillation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FDMD can achieve state-of-the-art performance on three widely used CC-ReID benchmarks PRCC, Celeb-reID and LaST.
