software cost estimation process is frequently debated by software development community for decades. In order to estimate the cost, numerous methods can be used such as an expert judgment, algorithmic model or parametric, top-down approach, price-to-win, bottom-up and many more. Questionnaire and literature survey were carried out in this study. The result from the survey shows that the expert judgment method, which is based on experience and past estimation histories, is commonly use to estimate cost in software development project while the result from the literature shows that COCOMO II provides accurate result because many variables are being considered including the reuse of parameter besides the expert judgment. As a conclusion, expert judgment and algorithmic model are widely used as methods in software cost estimation process and the process was done manually. The integration of these two methods helps in producing accurate result for cost estimation process. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Lack of hearing ability hinders deaf children from mastering grammar in language studies. Unfortunately, such software targeting Malay language is limited. This paper attempts to generate new approach in handling such software. These include detection of defects when switching into local languages, date format and accommodating the local laws. The acceptance of international software for local use goes beyond just these aspects. For this purpose, software that supports the multi-languages is evaluated. The main research question of this paper: The lack of cultural dimensions in localisation testing of assistive technology decreases the effectiveness of localisation testing of the localised software. On the account of cultural dimensions, Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions will be experimented to study which cultural dimensions are most suited for such software. From our empirical results, the failure rate of the testing is higher compared to incorporating culture dimensions.

Wireless IP-based video broadcast suffers from heavy packet losses caused by multipath fading and interference variations in the wireless channels. This paper addresses this issue by proposing an application-layer error-resilience scheme, called the replicate multiple descriptor coding scheme (RMD). In principle, RMD extends the conventional multiple descriptor transmission strategy with two new features, the selective-frame-based replication and a time-shifted descriptor transmission. We show that with these two features, we are able to exploit the time diversity in a time-sharing channel to mitigate the damage impact and provide more efficient protection for the video. The simulation results confirm that when the packet loss rate is heavy (e.g., 15%–35%), RMD outperforms other schemes in terms of PSNR improved, while only requiring moderate data overheads.

Visual codebook based texture analysis and image recognition is popular for its robustness to affine transformation and illumination variation. It is based on the affine invariable descriptors of local patches extracted by region detector, and then represents the image by histogram of the codebook constructed by the feature vector quantization. The most commonly used vector quantization method is k-means. But due to the limitations of predefined number of clusters and local minimum update rule, we show that k-means would fail to code the most discriminable descriptors. Another defect of k-means is that the computational complexity is extremely high. In this paper, we proposed a nonparametric vector quantization method based on mean shift, and use locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) to reduce the cost of the nearest neighborhood query in the mean-shift iterations. The performance of proposed method is demonstrated in several image classification tasks. We also show that the information Gain or Mutual information based feature selection based on our codebook further improves the performance.

This paper presents an alternative feature ranking technique for Traditional Malay musical instruments sounds dataset using rough-set theory based on the maximum degree of dependency of attributes. The modeling process comprises seven phases: data acquisition, sound editing, data representation, feature extraction, data discretization, data cleansing, and finally feature ranking using the proposed technique. The results show that the selected features generated from the proposed technique able to reduce the complexity process. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Communication networks are now facing more and more potential large scale region threats such as natural disaster and physical attack. Under such region failure scenarios, numerous network elements within a geographically correlated region may be simultaneously destroyed, resulting a dramatical compromise or even breakdown of overall network connectivity. In this paper, we study the network survivability against a random region failure, which is modeled as a circular cut residing on the network. For a network adopting the cost effective multiple path routing mechanism, we examine how the network throughput performance degrades with region failure under the region-disjoint and node-disjoint routing constraints. The corresponding traffic throughput optimization problem and linear programming formulation are also addressed. We further discuss the problem of upgrading network with the minimal cost when the link capacity is not sufficient to protect the network against region failure.

Fault analysis study of the block cipher FOX64

FOX is a family of symmetric block ciphers from MediaCrypt AG that helps to secure digital media, communications, and storage. The high-level structure of FOX is the so-called (extended) Lai–Massey scheme. This paper presents a detailed fault analysis of the block cipher FOX64, the 64-bit version of FOX, based on a differential property of two-round Lai–Massey scheme in a fault model. Previous fault attack on FOX64 shows that each round-key (resp. whole round-keys) could be recovered through 11.45 (resp. 183.20) faults on average. Our proposed fault attack, however, can deduce any round-key (except the first one) through 4.25 faults on average (4 in the best case), and retrieve the whole round-keys through 43.31 faults on average (38 in the best case). This implies that the number of needed faults in the fault attack on FOX64 can be significantly reduced. Furthermore, the technique introduced in this paper can be extended to other series of the block cipher family FOX.

Color mapping plays a critical role in visualization of time-varying data and also sets a challenge for researchers due to the consistency of mapping and great changes in time-varying data. In order to solve this problem and generate feature-prominent animation, we present a two phase optimization technique using bilateral filtering and global energy functions. In the first phase, for each time step, we use a weighted mapping function which combines linear mapping and feature histogram. In the second phase, an optimization function taking global color mapping and minimum color difference into consideration is designed. So users can clearly distinguish between data in variable time steps and easily understand the corresponding relationships between different structures. The experiments' results show that our method can achieve high quality visualization for both static and time-varying data.

Selecting the best views for 3D objects is useful for many applications. However, with the existing methods applied in CAD models, the results neither exhibit the 3D structures of the models fairly nor conform to human's browsing habits. In this paper, we present a robust method to generate the canonical views of CAD models, and the above problem is solved by considering the geometry and visual salient features simultaneously. We first demonstrate that for a CAD model, the three coordinate axes can be approximately determined by the scaled normals of its faces, such that the pose can be robustly normalized. A graph-based algorithm is also designed to accelerate the searching process. Then, a convex hull based method is applied to infer the upright orientation. Finally, four isometric views are selected as candidates, and the one whose depth image owns the most visual features is selected. Experiments on the Engineering Shape Benchmark (ESB) show that the views generated by our method are pleasant, informative and representative. We also apply our method in the calculation of model rectilinearity, and the results demonstrate its high performance.

Learning Object (LO) is one of the main research topics in the e-learning community in the recent years, and most researchers pay attention to the issue of Learning Object Reusability. The most obvious motivation is the economic interest of reusing learning material instead of repeatedly authoring it. In this paper we present the process of creating granular learning object for enabling the reusing of LO in e-Learning context. Reusability requires the LO to be in a fine-grain form because raw media elements are often much easier to reuse then aggregate assemblies. In other words, as the LO size decreases (lower granularity), its potential for reuse increases. A prototype of learning objects repository that contain granular LO has been developed to show the process of granularizing LO. Each of existing LO will be extracted into granular element with the metadata and the system generated unique id for each LO based on its identifier (URL of LO) and save automatically the metadata contain in the LO. These metadata will be used for searching and retrieval process of the granule LO.
