A schema-based P2P network to enable publish-subscribe for multimedia content in open hypermedia systems

Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS) aim to provide efficient dissemination, adaptation and integration of hyperlinked multimedia resources. Content available in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks could add significant value to OHS provided that challenges for efficient discovery and prompt delivery of rich and up-to-date content are successfully addressed. This paper proposes an architecture that enables the operation of OHS over a P2P overlay network of OHS servers based on semantic annotation of (a) peer OHS servers and of (b) multimedia resources that can be obtained through the link services of the OHS. The architecture provides efficient resource discovery. Semantic query-based subscriptions over this P2P network can enable access to up-to-date content, while caching at certain peers enables prompt delivery of multimedia content. Advanced query resolution techniques are employed to match different parts of subscription queries (subqueries). These subscriptions can be shared among different interested peers, thus increasing the efficiency of multimedia content dissemination. Copyright © 2008 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Quality of web service, especially the reputation, has become a benchmark to differentiate the services and providers. Unfortunately, the current reputation research in the field of web services don't reasonably and correctly think about the randomicity and fuzziness which has been the basic issue in the relative research area about trust. We proposed two novel metrics to qualify the reputation of web services and providers. We designed two kinds of trust model based on cloud model theory to describe the randomicity and fuzziness of the two metrics. Furthermore, a formalized calculation was provided to obtain the trust degree of services requestors to web services and providers.

Internet migration from IPv4 to IPv6 has introduced more challenge to IP address lookup problem. Nowadays, some existing address lookup algorithms work well for IPv4 addresses, however, few of them can scale well to IPv6 both in lookup and update speed. As IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, schemes whose lookup time grows with address length become less attractive. In this paper, a novel level based IPv6 routing lookup algorithm, called level-based routing lookup (LRL) algorithm, is proposed. This proposed algorithm is specially designed based on the extensive research on the characteristics of IPv6 prefix length distribution, which is composed of four levels. Different structures are used for different levels. Intensive experiments have been done to evaluate the algorithm. The results show that the new algorithm excels in following aspects: good support of IPv6, extremely excellent fast lookup speed, stable memory consumption and competitive update speed.

Personalized Service System Based on Hybrid Filtering for Digital Library

Personalized service systems are an effective way to help users obtain recommendations for unseen items, within the enormous volume of information available based on their preferences. The most commonly used personalized service system methods are collaborative filtering, content-based filtering, and hybrid filtering. Unfortunately, each method has its drawbacks. This paper proposes a new method which unified partition-based collaborative filtering and meta-information filtering. In partition-based collaborative filtering the user-item rating matrix can be partitioned into low-dimensional dense matrices using a matrix clustering algorithm. Recommendations are generated based on these low-dimensional matrices. Additionally, the very low ratings problem can be solved using meta-information filtering. The unified method is applied to a digital resource management system. The experimental results show the high efficiency and good performance of the new approach.

Collaborative filtering is one of the most successful technologies for building recommender systems, and is extensively used in many personalized systems. However, existing collaborative filtering algorithms do not consider the change of user interests. For this reason, the systems may recommend unsatisfactory items when user's interest has changed. To solve this problem, two new data weighting methods: time-based data weight and item similarity-based data weight are proposed, to adaptively track the change of user interests. Based on the analysis, the advantages of both weighting methods are combined efficiently and applied to the recommendation generation process. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional item-based collaborative filtering algorithm.

The subject of self-tuning statistics management for database management system was studied using a query feedback (QF)-driven method. A self-tuning statistics management system model was designed, and a mechanism of automatic statistics creation was explored. A method of automatically updating statistics on top of perceiving data modification was presented, and the heuristic rules of statistics updating were designed. By using the feedback of executor to update statistics, this method avoids scanning data and reduces the cost of computing. Finally, the effectivity of this method was testified that it could improve the performance of updating statistics without losing the accuracy of statistics.

The widespread use of portable devices has led to the resurgence of speech interfaces. There is a crucial difference between the visual and auditory presentation of text. If text is presented visually, the user can skim and scroll through the content to locate relevant information. Audio output is usually presented sequentially with media player controls. For synthesized text a much more precise control is required. Actually the ability to skim and scroll through speech or auditory output will be crucial to the deployment speech output. Speakr is a speech synthesis system which permits different levels of skimming in speech outputs produced using speech synthesis. Speakr exploits the availability of the underlying text representation. Different aspects of the text representation - typographic conventions, markups, syntax, semantics, etc. - are used to achieve skim and scroll effects.

NAREGI is a 5-year Japanese National Grid Project during 2003--2007, whose chief aim is to develop a set of grid middleware to serve as a basis for future e-Science. NAREGI also aims to lead the way in standardization of grid middleware, based on the OGSA architecture. Its super-scheduler is based on the proposed OGSA-EMS Architecture, in that it becomes the first working implementation that implements the documented component relationships within the OGSA-EMS architecture document v.l.0. Through the efforts and experience in the design and implementation, it has been confirmed that the documented OGSA-EMS architecture is quite feasible, but will require significant amount of refinement and speed improvements to finalize its detailed specifications. The super-scheduler also supports co-allocation across multiple sites to support automated execution of grid-based MPIs that execute across machines. Such a resource allocation requires sophisticated interactions between the OGSA-EMS components not covered in the current OGSA-EMS architecture, some of which are non-trivial. Overall, job scheduling with OGSA-EMS has proven to not only work, but also that its job allocation and execution time is within reasonable bounds.

This paper describes a new data mining algorithm to learn Bayesian networks structures based on memory binary particle swarm optimization method and the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle. An memory binary particle swarm optimization (MBPSO) is proposed. A memory influence is added to a binary particle swarm optimization. The purpose of the added memory feature is to prevent and overcome premature convergence by providing particle specific alternate target points to be used at times instead of the best current position of the particle. In addition, our algorithm, like some previous work, does not need to have a complete variable ordering as input. The experimental results illustrate that our algorithm not only improves the quality of the solutions, but also reduces the time cost. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
