Nowadays there is a growing trend in many scientific disciplines to support researchers by providing enhanced information access through linking of publications and underlying datasets, so as to support research with infrastructure to enhance reproducibility and reusability of research results. In this research note, we present an overview of an ongoing research project, named VADIS (VAriable Detection, Interlinking and Summarization), that aims at developing technology and infrastructure for enhanced information access in the Social Sciences via search and summarization of publications on the basis of automatic identification and indexing of survey variables in text. We provide an overview of the overarching vision underlying our project, its main components, and related challenges, as well as a thorough discussion of how these are meant to address the limitations of current information access systems for publications in the Social Sciences. We show how this goal can be concretely implemented in an end-user system by presenting a search prototype, which is based on user requirements collected from qualitative interviews with empirical Social Science researchers. Argumentation is arguably one of the central features of scientific language. We present ArguminSci, an easy-to-use tool that analyzes argumentation and other rhetorical aspects of scientific writing, which we collectively dub scitorics. The main aspect we focus on is the fine-grained argumentative analysis of scientific text through identification of argument components. The functionality of ArguminSci is accessible via three interfaces: as a command line tool, via a RESTful application programming interface, and as a web application. © 2018 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Argumentation is an essential feature of scientific language. We present an annotation study resulting in a corpus of scientific publications annotated with argumentative components and relations. The argumentative annotations have been added to the existing Dr. Inventor Corpus, already annotated for four other rhetorical aspects. We analyze the annotated argumentative structures and investigate the relations between argumentation and other rhetorical aspects of scientific writing, such as discourse roles and citation contexts. © 2018 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The number of publications is rapidly growing and it is essential to enable fast access and analysis of relevant articles. In this paper, we describe a set of methods based on measuring semantic textual similarity, which we use to semantically analyze and summarize publications through other publications that cite them. We report the performance of our approach in the context of the third CL-SciSumm shared task and show that our system performs favorably to competing systems in terms of produced summaries.

An intelligent agent (IA) is a self-contained, autonomous software module that could perform certain tasks on behalf of its users. It could also interact with other intelligent agents and/or human in performing its task(s). There is now growing interest in using intelligent software agents for a variety of tasks in a diverse range of applications: personal assistants, intelligent user interfaces, managing electronic mail, navigating and retrieving information from the Internet and databases, scheduling meetings and manufacturing operations, electronic business, online shopping, negotiating for resources, decision making, design and telecommunications. The paper gives a brief introduction to intelligent agents and their classification, outlines applications of intelligent agents on the Internet and web and highlights their prospects.

Summary form only given. An intelligent agent is a self-contained, autonomous software package with enough smartness to act as your personal assistant and to accomplish tasks on your behalf autonomously. It is a new paradigm in artificial intelligence and software, and is better suited for a wide range of web-based and distributed computing applications. The emergence of intelligent agent technology is an important step forward in efficiently managing and making effective use of vast amount of information now available on-line. Intelligent software agents on the Internet and the web are poised to revolutionise the way in which we search, filter and retrieve information, do on-line shopping, get advise and use computers. They pervade the Internet environment and networked computing systems offering a whole range of new features and greatly impacting the use of the Internet and computer-based systems. Intelligent software agents can work in the background, roam the Internet, move from one computer to another, search for information you need, filter and manage your mail, do shopping for you finding competitive products and services and personalise your web-based applications. Also an agent can meet other agents on the net and collaborate with them to accomplish its tasks. This article presents an overview of the way in which intelligent software agents are used in a range of Internet and web-based applications. It also discusses how they might affect and influence future applications.
