A hybrid system of cellular mode and the peer-to-peer (P2P) mode is considered in this paper, where the cellular uplink resource is reused by the P2P transmission. In the objective of overall system throughput maximization, we addresses the problem of distributed power control of P2P transmission in the hybrid system model. Some preliminary results of the problem are presented first to investigate the optimal solution of the problem. Based on these results, by applying the game theory approach, that is, potential game, an asynchronously distributed power control scheme is devised. The associated properties of the proposed scheme are analyzed, including the global convergence, the conditional optimality and the Lyapunov stability. In the end, simulation is conducted to study the performance of the proposed scheme, which shows satisfying results.

In this paper, a novel channel allocation method is proposed to reduce the time-varying effects in downlink OFDMA systems. This method makes use of a Kalman filter in order to predict the user SINR and rate in the next time slot. Based on this estimated rate, the available subcarriers are assigned according to a rate greeding algorithm. Compared with the rate-craving greedy (RCG) algorithm and the rate allocation with fixed increase (RAFI) algorithm, the numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the throughput for a single user, averagely 3 to 7 % more than the RCG algorithm and 1 to 3 % more than the RAFI algorithm. Moreover, the total outage probability is also reduced as the number of users increases, averagely 8 to 11% more than the RCG algorithm and 3 to 7% more than the RAFI algorithm.

In hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) process, a retransmission occurs on the condition that the first transmission failed. Multiple received packets are combined for detection at the receiver. Equivalent noise after combining is not additive Gaussian white noise and not independent on the transmitted signal. Unfortunately, the assumption of zero-mean-Gaussian and independent noise after combining is widely used in the analysis of HARQ, as well as other similar techniques. In this paper, conditional error ratio of the retransmission is accurately analyzed by taking the failure of the first transmission into account. Furthermore, approximate expressions of conditional error ratio are also presented for flexibility of analysis and application. Numerical results demonstrate that estimation error of the traditional estimation is much visible when channel quality of retransmission is worse than that of the first transmission.

In this paper, a distributed power control algorithm is proposed to perform adaptive spatial multiplexing for the relay enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular systems. As the optimal spatial multiplexing problem is non-convex, we utilize the distributed iteration method to achieve its near-optimal solution. By determining the restriction on the transmit power for each subcarrier, the individual power allocation at the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS) can always converge to some desirable Nash Equilibriums with satisfying performance. Simulation results show that the proposed distributed power control algorithm provides significant gain in system transmit rate over the traditional iterative water-filling scheme.

In MIMO multi-relay systems, close-loop precoding at relay nodes is not necessary if unicast modes are carried out. However, in unicast modes, the inter-stream interference at relay nodes may degrade the system capacity. In this paper, two unicast modes are proposed to reduce the negative impact of the residual interference. The first one suppresses the interference by applying orthogonal precoding at the source node and the second one suppresses the residual interference through receiving filters at relay nodes. Analysis of the system capacity performance are given and simulation results will demonstrate the superiority of proposed modes.

A fairness adjustable grouping (FAG) multiuser scheduling algorithm based on MMSE-SIC (Minimum Mean Square Error-Successive Interference Cancel) receiver is proposed for MIMO MAC (Multiple Access Channel). The implementation in the 3GPP LTE VMIMO (Virtual Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems as pairing scheduling (PS) is discussed. This algorithm makes use of the proportional fair (PF) scheduling to select the primary user, and applies of grouping method as well as a designed fairness adjustable pairing criterion to select the paring user which takes account of both the channel orthogonality and system capacity . The comparison simulation results show that the FAGPS scheme exploits the multiplexing gain and the multiuser diversity gain, while at the same time improves the service quality of the users at the cell edge. Furthermore, the tradeoff between the system throughput and user fairness can be achieved by varying an adjustable coefficient of the algorithm. © 2008 IEEE.

In current wireless system performance evaluation, separate link and system level simulators are needed due to less computation complexity. The link-to-system (L2S) interface method to interconnect two simulators is essential and need careful definition. Exponential effective signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio mapping (EESM) is a typical L2S interface method suitable for evaluation of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. When it's used in simulation, all the sub-carriers for one user have to use the same modulation and coding scheme. In this paper, two modified L2S interface EESM methods are presented based on the idea that a high-level modulation symbol could be equivalently converted to several low-level modulation symbols with different reliability. As a result, usage of EESM can be extended to the situation that sub-carriers for one user use different modulation schemes. © 2008 IEEE.

Streaming service becomes an essential service in the third-generation cellular mobile network and its evolutions. Packet scheduling plays an important role in radio resource management to guarantee QoS of streaming service. In this paper, a novel fast packet scheduling algorithm called MAF (Minimum Ahead First) is proposed for HS-DSCH (High Speed Downlink shared channel) in HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access). In the proposed algorithm, the streaming users which intend to transmit data exigently are scheduled with high priorities. Both the delay of packets in NodeB buffer and the data size in UE buffer are considered together as a parameter to indicate the exigent degrees of transmission. The performance of MAF algorithm combined with Max C/I and PF algorithms is analyzed. The simulation results show that the proposed MAF algorithm achieves an improvement in term of providing QoS for streaming service. The different priority provided by the MAF algorithm with different thresholds for streaming service is also indicated by numeral results in several multi-service scenarios.

This paper investigates the spatial multiuser scheduling strategies that apply different pairing criteria to select a pair of users carrying out transmission simultaneously in virtual MIMO (VMIMO) systems. Five kinds of criteria are described and compared, which are categorized as channel correlation minimization, bit error rate (BER) minimization and capacity maximization depending on their diverse starting points. The system throughput and user fairness are simulated and analyzed. As the results show, the proposed criteria can make full use of channel state information provided by the physical layer and can be compatible with different antenna deployments, and in addition, through obtaining more spatial diversity gain and multiuser diversity gain, the VMIMO system with spatial pairing scheduling approaches remarkably improve the system performance comparing to the MIMO system with single user scheduling.

This paper investigates a simple and effective power allocation method to maximize the Effective Configuration Duration (ECD) in wireless sensor networks, which aims to minimize the signaling overhead needed to perform relay nodes selection, Cooperative Set update and power allocation, resulting in obvious power saving and lifetime extension. Compared with traditional allocation schemes, this method jointly considers the residual energy of sensors and the mean of channel power gains, thus limits the feedback burden and increases the topology stability. Two classical power allocation methods are evaluated for comparison, and numerical results show that the proposed scheme can significantly extend ECD over a wide range of parameter values.
