The concept of intraepithelial neoplasm (IEN) as a near-obligate precursor of cancers has generated opportunities to examine drug or device intervention strategies that may reverse or retard the sometimes lengthy process of carcinogenesis. Chemopreventive agents with high therapeutic indices, well-monitored for efficacy and safety, are greatly needed, as is development of less invasive or minimally disruptive visualization and assessment methods to safely screen nominally healthy but at-risk patients, often for extended periods of time and at repeated intervals. Imaging devices, alone or in combination with anticancer drugs, may also provide novel interventions to treat or prevent precancer.

Many universities and colleges are faced with declining numbers of potential engineering students. In Wyoming, this is due to a declining number of high school graduates as well as potential students not being aware of the engineering career field. We have met this challenge with a variety of awareness and recruiting programs. A common thread in these efforts is a hands-on laboratory program in digital design fundamentals. This program exposes students to the exciting world of engineering, Boolean logic, and fundamental design principles. This low cost program consists of a series of theory modules coupled with a hands-on laboratory component. We have purposely developed laboratory modules using low cost, readily available components and test equipment. This approach has been used for the past five years with a middle school girls program, science and engineering summer programs for high school juniors and seniors, K-12 teacher enrichment programs, and also freshmen orientation to electrical and computer engineering programs. In this paper we will describe the modular approach, the low cost laboratory exercises, and also the success of using this approach to attract students to careers in the engineering and science. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Two research questions motivated this study: "What important concepts in electric circuits and engineering mechanics do students find difficult to learn?" and "How can we describe students' mental models of the concepts identified in question 1?" This paper discusses the process used to identify difficult concepts in engineering mechanics and electric circuits, the results ofthat identification process, and the results of interviews to uncover the mental models engineering students use to explain these concepts. This study, part of the Center for the Advancement in engineering Education's "Scholarship of Learning engineering" element, builds on previous work in thermal and transport science and allows comparisons among difficult concepts in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

In 2000, University of Rhode Island (URI) President Carothers acknowledged, following an extended and sometimes acrimonious AAUP faculty union grievance process, that there had been a climate hostile to women faculty in the College of engineering. The purpose of this paper is to describe the positive steps that were taken at URI subsequent to that grievance to improve the climate for women faculty in STEM (science, Technology, engineering and Math) fields, and to place these steps within a framework for climate change. The paper starts with an overview of the percentages of women nationally in engineering, followed by a description of the hostile grievance process that took place at URI. Next is a discussion of pro-active measures that were taken by many communities of faculty on the URI campus, including most recently, those of the ADVANCE grant funded by the National science Foundation. These measures have been guided by a grounded theory approach to climate change that posits simultaneous change in individuals, interactional contexts, and institutional practices. As a result, URI has recruited a significant percentage of new women faculty in STEM fields in a relatively short time, and is working hard to ensure that they are retained. There have been many recent national initiatives to address the problem of the under representation of women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. It is well recognized that, beyond workplace equity, diversifying the practitioners in engineering and other STEM fields will enrich these disciplines by bringing different perspectives, skills, and values to the fore, will help America remain globally competitive, and will more responsibly integrate engineering practice with societal needs. Importantly, women and minority faculty also provide critically needed role models needed to attract and retain a more diverse student population. The study of the effects of GK-12 programs on teaching fellows is presented. The GK-12 grants are awarded to universities to have graduate students and faculty in STEM fields work with teachers, schools, and students to improve STEM education. The model of GK-12 at Tufts University as one of small team work in which one fellow works with 1-3 teachers and serves as a technical resource for the teacher and classroom and the teacher serves as an expert about pedagogy and classroom teaching. Evaluation data collected throughout both Tufts GK-12 projects have suggested an apparent trend in how the Fellows' understanding of teaching and schools changes over the course of their Fellowship.

The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The results are reported in this paper. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odor, ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide and other gases can be emitted from poultry manure. Little is known about the chemical makeup of poultry odor and the emissions of the specific malodorants from poultry manure. Currently, NH3 emissions drive research efforts to evaluate feasible abatement technologies. However, little is known how treatments targeting NH3 affect the potential for emissions of VOCs and odor. The objective of this study was to (1) identify and prioritize malodorants in poultry manure and (2) develop methodology for evaluating the effects of NH3 control treatments on VOCs and odor associated with poultry manure. Poultry manure was placed in special laboratory chambers designed and built to conduct measurements of gaseous emissions. Headspace samples were collected with SPME and analyzed on the GC-MS-O system for the identification and prioritization of poultry manure odorants. The GC-MS-Olfactometry enabled simultaneous chemical and olfactometry analysis and correlations of specific VOCs to specific odor. Special software was used to record odor/aroma characteristics and odor intensity. To date, the total of 91 compounds emitted from poultry manure were tentatively identified. Fifty seven out of 91 were reported for the first time. Olfactometry evaluations allowed for a preliminary identification of key malodorants emitted from poultry manure including H2S, methyl mercaptan, trimethyl amine, dimethyl trisulfide, butyric and isovaleric acids, p-cresol, indole and skatole. The system for evaluation of VOC and odor emissions from poultry manure worked well and the replications were reasonable. Treatments targeting emissions of ammonia from poultry manure have a mixed effect on VOCs and odor. Several key odorants were generated when the zeolite in feed was used to suppress ammonia emissions.

The use of demographic data to establish baseline characteristics of first-year female engineering students is discussed. A series of three surveys conducted during the two-course sequence has provided a wealth of information that further informs the significance of the demographic and results-oriented data. Longitudinal comparison of the data helps to identify the different key differences from one year to another. Knowledge of the differences among groups of female engineering students has proven crucial to improve the retention of women.

The paper proposes a layered scripting language technique for representation and control of avatar behavior for simpler avatar control in various domain environments. We suggest three layered architecture which is consisted of task-level behavior, high-level motion, and primitive motion script language. These layers brides gap between application domain and implementation environments, so that end user can control the avatar through easy and simple task-level scripting language without concerning low-level animation and the script can be applied various implementations regardless of application domain types. Our goal is to support flexible and extensible representation and control of avatar behavior by layered approach separating application domains and implementation tools. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
