Electric, water, gas and transportation utilities face severe challenges associated with security, quality, availability, reliability and profitability issues. They must solve interrelated system problems with respect to generation of electricity, transportation of fuel, and potable as well as waste water. In the future, engineers and managers of utilities must be well versed in the different disciplines of engineering including electrical civil, mechanical and information technology. The University of Colorado at Boulder addresses this educational opportunity by proposing a novel Integrated Utilities Management program for M.S. candidates who have a solid B.S. background or equivalent in a related discipline. The M.S. program will consist of four interdisciplinary paths dealing with business management and legal topics as they relate to federal and state regulatory issues, as well as agency and people-related leadership issues. The electric utilities option of this program will be centered on three core courses related to electric power generation/transmission and distribution, security and availability, quality and reliability, economics and environmental policy, and utility finance;two elective courses from a group of courses that address nuclear power, waste water, solid waste, telecommunications, renewable energies, data communication, fuels and case studies;and one capstone course consisting of either operations research or the investigation and resolution of a pending utility project such as the right-of-way of transmission lines, specification of new power plants, retrofitting of power plants or their impact on the environment. It is expected that candidates for this MS program will come from universities, from utilities, and from private and public agencies. The MS program can be completed by full- or part time students within one or two years of intensive study, respectively. This paper extends our prior work on multi-modal image registration based on the a priori knowledge of the joint intensity distribution that we expect to obtain, and Kullback-Leibler distance. This expected joint distribution can be estimated from pre-aligned training images. Experimental results show that, as compared with the Mutual Information and Approximate Maximum Likelihood based registration methods, the new method has longer capture range at different image resolutions, which can lead to a more robust image registration method. Moreover, with a simple interpolation algorithm based on non-grid point random sampling, the proposed method can avoid interpolation artifacts at the low resolution registration. Finally, it is experimentally demonstrated that our method is applicable to a variety of imaging modalities. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Interviews of twenty-six Industrial engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

High school girls explore their potential for a career in engineering and technology through developing educational interactive multimedia software during a six-week summer internship. "Techno-neutral" girls - those who do not envision themselves pursuing a career in high-tech, yet have the academic preparedness, curiosity and commitment to complete the internship and produce a successful multimedia product - are recruited. The internship experience makes information technology accessible and attractive to the girls via developing creative, hands-on educational software for younger children. The girls develop technical skills in graphic design, user interface development, visual programming, digital image manipulation, multimedia authoring and user testing. The girls were as impacted by the environmental and cultural conditions of the internship - including working in teams - as they were by the opportunity to learn new technological tools. The internship helped the girls become aware that a technology-based career can be creative and fun while serving the needs of society.

This project used Eberhardt's team functions as an observational protocol to examine the team process as it occurred in the engineering Practices Introductory Course Sequence (EPICS) at the Colorado School of Mines. A design report scoring rubric was used to evaluate the quality of the team-produced final report. The results of this study suggest that the gender composition of the teams impacted both the interactions that took place during the team process and the quality of the team's final report. Members of majority male teams were more likely to be witnessed clarifying and standard setting during team interactions than were members of majority female teams. During the first course, the final reports that were produced by majority male teams on average were judged to be of higher quality than were those that were produced by majority female teams. The reverse was found to be true in the second course.

The women in Applied science and engineering (WISE) Summer Bridge program is designed to prepare incoming female students for the transition from high school to the College of engineering and Applied sciences (CEAS) at Arizona State University (ASU). This program offers academic reviews in courses such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Computer programming tutorials are also offered in Excel and HTML to better prepare students for their freshman introductory engineering course. Participants acclimate to the campus by receiving general information concerning the university, financial aid, and departmental advising. Students attending the program become familiar with the campus, have a head start on their freshman engineering classes, and have a chance to meet other female students. An overview of the WISE Summer Bridge program is presented as well as retention data for 1998 and 1999 program participants. In addition, the paper discusses the need for and impact of bridge programs specifically geared toward female students. Further, the paper investigates other life circumstances, such as level of involvement in student activities, living situation, and employment that impact retention of these students. Finally, future projections of implementation and direction of student retention programs are explored.
