The women in Applied science and engineering (WISE) program at Arizona State University provides summer recruiting programs that serve to bridge elementary, secondary, and college level education. In addition to introducing students to career options, these programs spark individual interest and allow students to preview types of courses associated with engineering academics. Attrition studies have reported that women often enter into science, mathematics, and engineering with little information on their discipline and consequently decide to transfer to other majors or forgo receiving their education altogether. Therefore, it is necessary that recruitment programs create curricula that introduce the student to basic engineering concepts and directly expose them to the expectations of the college level curriculum. The WISE summer program curriculum includes several projects designed to allow the student to experience engineering in both social and academic settings. These projects center on understanding concepts of teamwork, problem solving, and analytical evaluation. Specific projects introduce students to several different engineering disciplines and allow them to draw conclusions concerning their similarities and how these disciplines interact with each other. An overview of WISE summer program projects geared toward the college level engineering curriculum is presented and a discussion of methods used to design and implement these projects is included. Specific factors that influence implementation, as well as benefits and shortcomings of the projects, is also discussed.

Industry has recognized that the employment of women and minorities is critical in maintaining a diverse and progressive engineering environment. It has played a significant role in the women in Applied science and engineering (WISE) recruitment programs. For example, industry has offered financial support, sponsored company tours and initiated the participation of engineers to serve as educators and speakers for both middle school and high school summer programs. In addition, industry has played a significant role in WISE retention programs including the multi-tiered mentor program and onsite shadow program. These programs foster relationships between students and engineers and help bridge the gap between education and employment. Finally, industry members have further strengthened collaborative efforts by serving on the WISE industry advisory committee and participating as industry panel members at various events. An overview of WISE programs that involve industry support are presented as well as a discussion of the impact industry has made on these particular programs. In addition, the mutual benefits of industry supported pre-college recruitment and college retention programs are discussed.

There is an ever-increasing emphasis on teamwork both in the engineering classroom and the workplace. As a result, engineering students need to be aware of how diversity issues play a role in group dynamics. Understanding diversity allows student teams to work more effectively, and provides students with particularly marketable skills for today's corporate environment. With this in mind, the Foundation Coalition commissioned a project to develop a multimedia training for engineering student-related diversity issues in the form of an interactive CD ROM. Designing a fully functional training in a form of a computer program is a lengthy process. The steps include doing a review of the relevant research, designing the framework, designing a storyboard, writing a script, soliciting feedback, recruiting a cast, shooting video, creating animation, programming, testing and debugging. This paper discusses this process and the program content.

UNDERWATER INSPECTION FOR WELDING AND OVERHAUL

作者： MITTLEMAN, J SWAN, L John Mittleman:is a mechanical engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Coastal Systems Station in Panama City Florida. His Primary Responsibilities are in the development of underwater nondestructive testing equipment for use by fleet divers and inspectors. He also performs research in the characterization of metal microstructure through ultrasonic scattering measurements. Mr. Mittleman received his BS from Cornell University in 1969 and science master's in ocean engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970. His research currently supports doctoral studies with Iowa State University. Mr. Mittleman received the American Society of Naval Engineer's Solberg Award in 1981 for his contributions to underwater ship hull inspection. Mr. Mittleman is a member of ASNE ASNT ASTM IoD Sigma Xi Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. Lisa Swan:is a mechanical engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City Florida. She is involved in nondestructive testing engineering primarily in the underwater arena. Ms. Swan holds a bachelor of science in materials engineering from North Carolina State University. She is a graduate of the Federal Women's Executive Leadership Program. Ms. Swan is a member of ASNT.

Significant progress has been made in making underwater ultrasonic thickness gauging and magnetic particle inspections available to the fleet. Under sponsorship from the Naval Sea Systems Command, Director of Ocean engineering, Underwater Ship Husbandry Division (NavSea 00C5), the Coastal Systems Station has developed complete hardware packages supporting these two nondestructive test methods, and has introduced them to military inspectors at a shore intermediate maintenance activity, a destroyer tender, and a naval shipyard. Performance trials conducted prior to taking the systems to the field have been accepted by NavSea, Ships' Concepts Group, Materials Subgroup, Metals Division (NavSea 5142) as evidence that these inspections can reliably be performed underwater. Avenues for certifying specially trained divers and inspectors are being developed;for the first time the Navy will have all of the elements in place for underwater inspections satisfying the requirements of Mil-Std-271 (Requirements for Nondestructive Testing Methods) and the Naval Ships' Technical Manual Chapter 074. Underwater ultrasonic thickness gauging has also been slated for use in the fleet, as data from laboratory and field trials have consistently shown that reliable results can be obtained by a team comprising a certified topside inspector and a diver. In tests performed at the Ship Repair Facility (SRF), Yokosuka, underwater readings were compared to those taken in dry dock by SRF inspectors, and independently by contract inspectors. On the basis of approximately 800 locations, differences between the data sets were found to be randomly distributed, with a standard deviation on the order of 0.02''. This level of accuracy is largely sufficient to distinguish plate which will need replacement during overhaul, or plate which is thick enough to weld on.
