Hierarchical clustering, a traditional clustering method, has been getting attention again. Among several reasons, a credit goes to a recent paper by Dasgupta in 2016 that proposed a cost function that quantitatively evaluates hierarchical clustering trees. An important question is how to combine this recent advance with existing successful clustering methods. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical clustering method to minimize the cost function of clustering tree by incorporating existing clustering techniques. First, we developed an ensemble tree-search method that finds an integrated tree with reduced cost by integrating multiple existing hierarchical clustering methods. Second, to operate on large and arbitrary shape data, we designed an efficient hierarchical clustering framework, called integrating divisive and ensemble-agglomerate (IDEA) by combining it with advanced clustering techniques such as nearest neighbor graph construction, divisive-agglomerate hybridization, and dynamic cut tree. The IDEA clustering method showed better performance in minimizing Dasgupta's cost and improving accuracy (adjusted rand index) over existing cost-minimization-based, and density-based hierarchical clustering methods in experiments using arbitrary shape datasets and complex biology-domain datasets.

Dear Editor,The occurrence of concentrated pneumonia cases in Wuhan city,Hubei province of China was first reported on December 30,2019 by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission(WHO,2020).The pneumonia cases were found to be linked to a large seafood and animal market in Wuhan,and measures for sanitation and disinfection were taken swiftly by the local government *** Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)and Chinese health authorities later determined and announced that a novel coronavirus(CoV),denoted as 2019-nCoV,had caused the pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan city(CDC,2020).Scientists from multiple groups had obtained the virus samples from hospitalized patients(Normile,2020).The isolated viruses were morphologically identical when observed under electron microscopy.

The external anatomy of the tree leaves of the monocotyledon plant, Asian palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer), differs from that of other plants in the scaly secretions on their surfaces. These secretions are used by traditional palmyra tree climbers to treat cuts or wounds inflicted by their tools during palm juice tapping. We performed a study to scientifically validate this traditional application and determine the pharmacological significance of palmyra secretion. Light microscopy, ultraviolet (UV) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to characterize the scaly secretions of palmyra palm. Phytochemical investigation and biological properties like antimicrobial and wound healing studies were conducted using standard procedures. Phytochemical investigation confirmed the presence of tannins, carbohydrates, protein, terpenoids, and reducing sugar. SEM results revealed the presence of hair-like structure on the leaf secretions. Leaf secretions also exhibited enhanced antibacterial and wound healing property. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has emerged as a potent catalyst for transformation across many industries as a part of Industry 4.0. This review thoroughly examines IIoT applications, demonstrating how it enhances operational efficiency, informed decision-making, cost optimization, innovation, and workplace safety. While prior research has often concentrated on technical dimensions such as fog and edge computing, network protocols, or big data integration, several emerging and high-impact application areas remain underexplored. This study addresses that gap by systematically reviewing IIoT implementations in critical yet often overlooked domains, including environmental monitoring, agriculture, construction, healthcare, robotics, smart grids, and predictive maintenance. It offers fresh insights into how IIoT is being adapted to meet real-world challenges in these sectors. In addition to outlining the current landscape, the review identifies core barriers such as data security, interoperability, and system scalability. It underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration and strategic alignment to fully leverage the transformative potential of IIoT. The paper concludes by outlining key research gaps and future opportunities to guide continued innovation and scholarly investigation.

Phosphorylation-inducing chimeric small molecules (PHICS) can enable a kinase to act at a new cellular location or phosphorylate non-native substrates (neo-substrates)/ sites (neo-phosphorylations). [1, 2] We report a modular design and high-yielding synthesis of such PHICS that endowed multiple new activities to protein kinase C (PKC). For example, while PKC is unable to downregulate the activity of a gain-of-function variant (S180A) of Bruton's tyrosine kinase that evokes B cell malignancy phenotype, PHICS enabled PKC to induce inhibitory neo-phosphorylations on this variant. Furthermore, while PKC typically phosphorylates its membrane-associated substrates, PKC with PHICS phosphorylated multiple cytosol-based neo-substrates (e.g., BCR-ABL). Finally, a PHICS for BCR-ABL induced death of chronic myeloid leukemia cell lines. These studies show the power of synthetic chemistry to expand the chemical and functional diversity of proteins in cells using bifunctional molecules.

The aviation sector has been one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;there is an urgent need to transition from traditional fossil-based jet fuel to sustainable aviation fuel to meet net-zero targets by 2030. The use of renewable aviation fuel may be regarded as the most effective option for reducing GHG emissions in the aviation sector while allowing for long-term growth. In this study, the microalgae oil was transformed to develop hydrocarbons with the boiling point range of jet fuel. Following the transesterification of algal oil fatty acids to algal oil methyl ester, fractional distillation was carried out. The Box-Behnken technique was used to design experiments for efficient resource utilization by minimizing the number of tests during transesterification. The quantitative relationship function between input (molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst concentration, and temperature) and % yield of methyl ester as an output of the process was developed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) was utilized to develop a prognostic model with good prediction effectiveness. MORSM (multi-objective response surface methodology) was also used to build a prediction model using correlations. A set of statistical indicators and Theil's U2 were used to examine the prediction efficacy and model uncertainty of ANFIS and MORSM. On both statistical indices and Theil's U2, the ANFIS-based model outperformed. To get the best results, the desirability approach was used to improve operating parameters. According to the desirability approach, the best operating parameters were catalyst concentration at 2.09%, methanol to oil ratio at 9.17%, and temperature at 60.49 °C, which resulted in the greatest yield of 91%. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

This Innovative Practice Full Paper presents a student experience model being implemented in the Electrical and Computer engineering (ECE) Department at Iowa State University. The department has been implementing, adapting and enhancing a student experience model as part of a scholarship program designed to support and increase the success of students from underrepresented groups in the fields of electrical, computer, software, and cyber security engineering, including community college transfer students. The student experience model uses evidence-based practices focused on professional and leadership development. Interventions include a weekly seminar; group activities such as outreach projects and volunteering; conference participation; faculty and peer mentoring; academic and social support; and collaborative activities with diversity programs, learning communities, student organizations, and companies. Feedback from students and input from peer mentors have been used to improve programming with an emphasis on sense of belonging, professional development, supportive community, leadership, and holistic well-being. In addition, due in part to various entry points into the model, the wide variety of student backgrounds, needs and experiences has been illuminated. This has helped the department and faculty become more aware of issues and consider new models and structures. This paper provides an overview of the student experience model and outcomes, including a summary of research results.

Meditation is a family of ancient and contemporary contemplative mind-body practices that can modulate psychological processes, awareness, and mental states. Over the last 40 years, clinical science has manualized meditation practices and designed various meditation interventions that have shown therapeutic efficacy for disorders including depression, pain, addiction, and anxiety. Over the past decade, neuroimaging has been used to examine the neuroscientific basis of meditation practices, effects, states, and outcomes for clinical and nonclinical populations. However, the generalizability and replicability of current neuroscientific models of meditation have not yet been established, because they are largely based on small datasets entrenched with heterogeneity along several domains of meditation (e.g., practice types, meditation experience, clinical disorder targeted), experimental design, and neuroimaging methods (e.g., preprocessing, analysis, task-based, resting-state, structural magnetic resonance imaging). These limitations have precluded a nuanced and rigorous neuroscientific phenotyping of meditation practices and their potential benefits. Here, we present ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis)–Meditation, the first worldwide collaborative consortium for neuroscientific investigations of meditation practices. ENIGMA-Meditation will enable systematic meta- and mega-analyses of globally distributed neuroimaging datasets of meditation using shared, standardized neuroimaging methods and tools to improve statistical power and generalizability. Through this powerful collaborative framework, existing neuroscientific accounts of meditation practices can be extended to generate novel and rigorous neuroscientific insights that account for multidomain heterogeneity.
