A PSO with increasing inertia weight, distinct from a widely used PSO with decreasing inertia weight, is proposed in this paper. Far from drawing conclusions from sole empirical study or rule of thumb, this algorithm is derived from particle trajectory study and convergence analysis. Four standard test functions are used to confirm its validity finally. From the experiments, it is clear that a PSO with increasing inertia weight outperforms the one with decreasing inertia weight, both in convergent speed and solution precision, with no additional computing load.

A simple but feasible Robust PID (RPID) tuning methodology is proposed in this paper. Most robust controllers that have been developed in literature by now have complex structures. They are either hard to be implemented or easily broken down. The simplest controller, PID, is chosen to be the prototype of robust controller. Through parameter selection, robust performance is achieved. Minimax criterion guarantees a set of controller parameters to be most optimal to the worst operating condition that may occur within the uncertainty ranges of model parameters. To execute the minimax search, a co-evolutionary algorithm based on Particle Swarm Optimization is advanced. Simulations are presented to demonstrate the advantages of RPID compared with other PIDs.

Fouling is one of key problems to design and operate heat exchanger. To many batch heat exchangers (BHE), their fouling resistance changed periodically because of the alternation of batch washing and CIP washing. For on-line measuring the BHE fouling resistance, a novel soft-sensing approach based on FNN (fuzzy neural network) and OED (orthogonal experimental design) was investigated. The BHE fouling resistance is modeled by two parts: the increase of short-term fouling in one batch and the long-term irreversible fouling at the beginning of the batch. A brewery wort evaporator in multi-phase flow was taken as the case. OED were designed to select out the key parameters influencing the long-term fouling and the short-term fouling respectively. Two FNN networks are trained to learn the formation trends of the short-term fouling and the long-term fouling respectively. The experimental results and the comparison to experimental formula show the soft-sensing approach is effective.

This paper presents a method of on-line measurement of the amount of steel rods with the real-time image acquired from the production line site. The information fusion is used in this study, which includes preliminary knowledge about the shape and site of the objects, data and information about edges of objects detected using different operators, and the distributed features of the rod from "edge to center" abstracted with artificial neural networks. Fuzzy classifier, artificial neural network and fuzzy logic methods have been used as the algorithms of the fusion in different levels. Experiments indicated that fusion with appropriate information deliberatively chosen is able to achieve excellent performance with only very small set of data and features being used.

Conventional mass flow rate is derived from volumetric flow rate multiplied by fluid density. However the measurement accuracy is not satisfying because of density variation. Mass flowmeters that can directly measure mass flow rate have been studied and developed recently. But these flowmeters still have limits in practical application. Mass flow rate directly measured by a vortex flowmeter has been proposed to overcome these disadvantages. But the piezoelectric sensor widely used in vortex flowmeter is subjected to noise disturbances caused by pipe vibrations and fluid turbulence. Many efforts on the sensor structure and signal processing have been made to improve the anti-noise ability. However the results are not so satisfactory. A new method using differential pressure between upstream and downstream sides of the vortex shedder to detect the vortex shedding is presented, from which vortex frequency and pressure drop are measured simultaneously. With this method mass flow rate is obtained directly and noise disturbance is reduced.

Multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) has been applied to performance monitoring for chemical processes. However, traditional methods of MSPC are based on the noise-corrupted data, which will make the performance of MSPC become worse. In this paper, a novel multivariate statistical projection analysis based on data de-noised with blind signal analysis and wavelet transform is presented, which can detect fault more quickly, so improves monitoring performance of the process. Through a simulation with a binary distillation column for benzene-toluene, we verify the more effectiveness and better performance of the new method than conventional MSPC.

The fault detection and identification based upon multivariate statistical projection methods (such as principal component analysis, PCA) have attracted more and more interest in academic research and engineering practice. In this paper, PCA and statistical control chart (SCC) have been used to detect and isolate process operating faults on an industrial rolling mill reheating furnace. The Q statistic (also referred as squared prediction error, SPE) and Hotelling T/sup 2/ statistic are used calculating the control limits of SCC. The diagnosing results to single fault (fuel-gas pipe control valve failure or furnace temperature sensor failure alone) and multiple faults (control valve failure and temperature sensor failure simultaneously) are presented after establishing the operating PCA model. The simulation results indicate that the method is effective and available.

By investigating the transmission of information and uncertainty in multivariable LTI systems disturbed by stationary random processes, the present paper discussed the connections within information rates, Bode integral and H/sub /spl infin// entropy. For the regulation problem, performance limits of disturbance rejection are formulated in the framework of information theory, by connecting entropy rate to Bode integral formula. The "conservation law of variety" is revised. For the tracking problem, an upper bound of disturbance rejection performance is derived based on a proved relation between information rates and H/sub /spl infin// entropy. The present results demonstrate that information rates are useful in control system analysis.
