Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are extensively used as flame retardants and plasticizers and have drawn concern due to their endocrine disruptive potentials. However, the impacts of OPFR exposure on reproductive and thyroid hormones have not been well clarified for females. In this study, serum concentrations of OPFRs were investigated, and levels of reproductive and thyroid hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone, estradiol, anti-Müllerian hormone, prolactin (PRL), testosterone (T), and thyroid stimulating hormone, were analyzed in childbearing-age females from Tianjin, a coastal city in China (n=319). Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) was the predominant OPFR and the median concentration was 0.33 ng/mL with a detection frequency of 96.6%. In the whole population, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were positively associated with T (p30, p © 2023, The Authors. In recent years, owing to the development of mobile devices, people can use social media more conveniently. This new trend of media drastically changes people’s lives, especially among adolescents. Earlier researches suggested it benefits their learning performance but also contains the risk of addiction. This research thus investigated the relationship between the usage of social media and the academic achievement of college students, and whether this would be different among students with the various locus of control. There was a total of 298 students participated in this research. The results are as follows: (1) External locus of control on expanding one’s conduct grade has several significant positive effects. (2) External locus of control on expressing the usage of social media has several significant positive effects. (3) Conduct grade was directly affected by External locus of control, this connection was the full mediation by the use time of social media. Last but not least, we have some suggestions for teachers, parents, and schools. Since using social media is essential for modern life, the following rise and problems from using social media applications or websites exist too. However, social media should not take the blame entirely. It all depends on how you use it. We should teach students to control themselves and use the right way to get better academic results, rather than getting rid of mobile phones and removing social media applications from their mobile phones. We hope that we can find the proper solutions in the future by having more in-depth research and avoid students’ abuse of social media and improve academic achievement. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Due to extensive industrialization, fluctuating technologies, and an overgrowing population a colossal amount of hazardous effluent is generated every moment and discharged directly into the environment. This crude wastewater can contaminate the environment and food cycle; causing serious damage not only to the ecosystem but also to public health. Therefore, it is critical to treat this wastewater by improving an ecological and economical technology before discharging/reusing. However, researchers are exasperating to improve an efficient and effective technology for the refinement of the bulky industrial wastewater. Here, some state-of-the-art production techniques of the FC-CNC bionanosorbents have been proposed for the effective purification of bulky effluent via a continuous adsorption system. This technology is superior to other methods due to its lower cost, higher efficiency, innovative and beneficial nature, and high selectivity. Instead, the precursors (cellulose and clay) are more available, nontoxic, ecofriendly, biodegradable, thermally and mechanically stable, and have shown high surface area, porous structure, possessed substantial active binding sites that could have been busting their adsorption performances. Still there are several complications concerning the effective processing/modification of the main precursors, production techniques, mechanism, and mode of application while purifying the crude wastewater. Henceforth, this review paper would be devoted by concentrating the modification process, advance production methods, synergistic mechanism to support the mono and/or multilayer physisorption, chemisorption, diffusion/deep penetration, and mode of application addressing the bulky wastewater treatment. By discovering the gaps and suggesting impending instructions, this study aims to expand the fabrication, categorization, and application of the FC-CNC bionanoadsorbents.

Glioblastoma is the most common adult brain tumour, representing a high degree of malignancy. Transcription factors such as RUNX1 are believed to be involved in the malignancy of glioblastoma. RUNX1 functions as an oncogene or tumour suppressor gene with diverse target genes. Details of the effects of RUNX1 on the acquisition of malignancy in glioblastoma remain unclear. Here, we show that RUNX1 downregulates p21 by enhancing expressions of BIRC5 and PIF1, conferring anti-apoptotic properties on glioblastoma. A gene switch-off therapy using alkylating agent-conjugated pyrrole-imidazole polyamides, designed to fit the RUNX1 DNA groove, decreased expression levels of BIRC5 and PIF1 and induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest via p21. The RUNX1-BIRC5/PIF1-p21 pathway appears to reflect refractory characteristics of glioblastoma and thus holds promise as a therapeutic target. RUNX gene switch-off therapy may represent a novel treatment for glioblastoma.

The wildfires are often triggered by drought and human activity, one of the main challenges when the wildfires happen is to access to freshwater sources. The aim of this research is to estimate the depth of groundwater stored in different surficial aquifers as the source of water to suppress the wildfires in the East part of Siak-Regency. Collecting the dataset using water level measurements in wells, 2D-resistivity, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR). These data were used to estimate the aquifer properties and provide additional information which can be used to identify optimal locations to install new groundwater wells. The research was conducted over a two-year period from 2016 to 2017. utilizing the resistivity method, GPR, and auger data all showed four easily identifiable subsurface layers. The surface soil in the study area is predominantly peat, with a depth ranging between 2m to 5.8m (bgs), resistivity values ranging from 80Ω-m to 100Ω- m, and EM velocities between 0.038m/ns and 0.048m/ns The sandy-clay loam is relatively impermeable and acts as a confining layer, with resistivity values between 40Ω-m to 80Ω- m. GPR signals in this confining layer are attenuated, The EM velocity values in the confining unit range between 0.12m/ns and 0.15m/ns. the auger was unable to penetrate further. Below the confining unit lies a sandy layer at depths between 8m and 14m (bgs) with resistivity values lower than 20Ω-m, the fourth layer was deeper than 16m (bgs), had resistivity values from 70 Ω-m-100Ω-m and was consistent with the Pleistocene clayey-gravels of the Kerumutan Formation (Qpke). The other results of our study indicate that the surface water from the studies area has quite a low PH (1.5 to 2.5), making them unsuitable for domestic use. Based on the results of this study is recommended that groundwater in the study area in eastern Siak Regency be screened in the confined aquifer, at a depth from approximately 8m to 12m.

Hemicellulose in Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) can be hydrolyzed to xylose and then converted to furfural via dehydration. Generally, furfural production uses sulfuric acid as a solvent. However, this solvent has toxic and can cause corrosion in equipment. This study developed a furfural production process using a green solvent called deep eutectic solvent (DES). DES was synthesized by mixing choline chloride and oxalic acid with a mole ratio of 1:1. The temperature and processing time were varied at 100, 120, and 150oC, respectively, to obtain optimal furfural. The optimal furfural concentration was reached 7.72 g/l at 150oC for 30 minutes. This process can be an alternative environmentally friendly furfural production process.

Thecoronavirusdisease2019(COVID-19)pandemic continues to pose a global threat to the human population. Identifying animal species susceptible to infection with the SARS-CoV-2/HCoV-19 pathogen is essential for controlling the outbreak and for testing valid prophylactics or therapeutics based on animal model studies. Here,different aged Chinese tree shrews(adult group, 1 year old;old group, 5–6 years old), which are close relatives to primates, were infected with SARS-CoV-2. X-ray, viral shedding, laboratory, and histological analyses were performed on different days postinoculation(dpi). Results showed that Chinese tree shrews could be infected by SARS-CoV-2. Lung infiltrates were visible in X-ray radiographs in most infected animals. Viral RNA was consistently detected in lung tissues from infected animals at 3,5, and 7 dpi, along with alterations in related parameters from routine blood tests and serum biochemistry, including increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and blood urea nitrogen(BUN). Histological analysis of lung tissues from animals at 3 dpi(adult group) and 7 dpi(old group) showed thickened alveolar septa and interstitial hemorrhage. Several differences were found between the two different aged groups in regard to viral shedding peak. Our results indicate that Chinese tree shrews have the potential to be used as animal models for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Determination of priority SNI-certified-products with AHP approach – A case study on food and beverage sector

Understanding consumers’ knowledge about standard-certified products is necessary for a standard implementation to protect the community from unsafe products; more specifically, regarding consumers’ preferences for products with SNI marking. However, with a large number of SNI in one sector, the research needs to make prioritization the study’s object(s). This study then aims to provide recommendations for priority SNI-certified products with a case study on the food and beverage sector. To achieve the aim, this study used the AHP approach with selected criteria of readiness of the industry, the readiness of the standardization and conformity assessment infrastructures and human resources, number of users, risk for consumers, and readiness for consumption. The criteria are used to weigh 5 products, namely bottled drinking water, iodized table salt, rice, canned fish, and yogurt. Risk for consumers is considered the most important criteria and rice was weighted as the priority of SNI-certified-product to be further researched in the food and beverage sector.

The terrestrial ecosystem plays an important role in regulating the regional carbon balance, in particular for China, where ecological projects during past decades [1,2] have led to large increases in China's land carbon sinks, partially offsetting fossil fuel emissions. Therefore, accurate evaluation of land carbon fluxes in China is critical for improving our understanding of the magnitude of China's carbon budget, and projecting its future changes.
