The present study intends to propose an interdisciplinary program that is based on integrative STEM approach and further to explore the development of engineering design in the program. The participants are 29 graduate and university students who take an optional course ‘Robotics’ in an university in Taiwan. Data collections include the groups’ research notes and interviews from selected groups. The result reveals that the participants could perform most of the engineering design practices, however, they have insufficient practices on the meta-cognitive dimensions. In addition, the factors that affect the participants’ engineering design are also revealed. Some suggestions that are beneficial in developing the engineering design are proposed in this study. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

The relationship between total suspended matter and sea current for the spread of Chlorophyll-a and fishing area in Jakarta Bay

Jakarta bay is a water with high input load due to activities from the surrounding river estuaries comes from Jabodetabek regions. This activity impacts the availability of Total Suspended Matter (TSM) in Jakarta Bay. The problem comes when the concentration of TSM exceeds the carrying capacity of the water thus encouraging plankton to grow and breed rapidly which has caused eutrophication. This research has three objectives: (1) Analyzing the relationship of TSM and Chlorophyll-a Case 2 (CHL2), (2) Analyzing impacts between sea current with CHL2 distribution, and (3) Analyzing correlation CHL2 distribution with fish catch data. Data collection was conducted on January 2018 until December 2018. Monthly TSM and CHL2 data were obtained through GlobColour data, monthly data on sea currents were obtained through Marine Copernicus data. TSM and CHL2 data were processed using the GIS and time series method to determine distribution area. Furthermore, a regression analysis is used to determine the relationship of TSM and CHL2. The result: Relationship of TSM and CHL2 obtained R = 0,8508 so that there is a strong association between TSM and CHL2; the current pattern in the Jakarta bay strongly affected by monsoon wind, the highest distribution occurs in the NWM, evenly distribution occurs in the transition 1, and SEM, the lowest distribution occurs in the transition 2; the demersal and pelagic fish catch period occurs in the end of transition 2 period where high CHL2 concentration and low sea current velocity make it easier for fishermen to catch the fish.

Culture is a collective social norm of human societies that often influences a person's values, thoughts, and social behaviors during interactions at an individual level. In this work, we present a computational analysis toward automatic assessing an individual's culture attribute of power distance, i.e., a measure of his/her belief about status, authority and power in organizations, by modeling their expressive prosodic structures during social encounters with people of different power status. Specifically, we propose a center-loss embedded network architecture to jointly consider the effect of social interaction contexts on individuals' prosodic manifestations in order to learn an enhanced representation for power distance recognition. Our proposed prosodic network achieves an overall accuracy of 78.6% in binary classification task of recognizing high versus low power distance. Our experiment demonstrates an improved discrim-inability (17.6% absolute improvement) over prosodic neural network without social context enhancement. Further visualization reveals that the diversity in the prosodic manifestation for individuals with low power distance seems to be higher than those of high power distance. © 2018 International Speech Communication Association. In this paper, we introduced geometric algebra to develop a new multisource multisink optimal evacuation route planning method. A dynamically updatable data structure and a matrix-based greedy searching algorithm were developed to support the dynamic evacuation route searching for multiple evacuees. Unlike most existing methods, which iteratively search the optimal path for each evacuee, our method can search all the possible evacuation routes synchronously. The dynamic updating of the network topography, weights, and constraints during the route searching is direct and flexible, thus can support the evacuation in dynamic cases. The method is demonstrated and tested by an evacuation case in the city of Changzhou, China. The simulation experiments suggest that the method can well support the dynamic route searching in large scales with dynamic weight changes. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Despite the critical role of culture in understanding adolescent self and identity, there is a lack of cross-culturally validated measures of adolescent self-construal. The present study evaluated cross-national measurement invariance of the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire-IV (AIQ-IV), assessing four dimensions of self-construal: personal, relational, public, and collective. The sample included 16,795 adolescents aged 14–19 years from 30 countries across four continents. The four-factor structure of the AIQ-IV obtained using exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) was supported in the vast majority of countries. Exact invariance testing using multi-group ESEM supported configural invariance, indicating that the overall structure of the AIQ-IV was similar across countries. Full scalar invariance was supported only on a subset of countries (i.e., when tests were conducted using European countries grouped by UN geographical regions). An alignment approach provided evidence for the approximate invariance of the ESEM model, with 15.6% of parameters showing noninvariance and allowing for comparison of latent means. The largest number of noninvariant parameters was evident in Asian countries, with items assessing collective-interdependent aspects of identity showing the most variation across countries. A comparison of mean levels of identity orientations across countries revealed that culture-level dimensions of collectivism–individualism do not translate simply into individual-level dimensions of self-construal. © 2025 Society for Research on Adolescence.

Pathogenic variants in the neuronal Na/K ATPase transmembrane ion transporter (ATP1A3) cause a spectrum of neurological disorders including alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC). The most common de novo pathogenic variants in AHC are p.D801N (~40 % of patients) and p.E815K (~25 % of patients), which lead to early mortality by spontaneous death in mice. Nevertheless, knowledge of the development of clinically relevant neurological phenotypes without the obstacle of premature death, is critical for the identification of pathophysiological mechanisms and ultimately, for the testing of therapeutic strategies in disease models. Here, we used hybrid vigor attempting to mitigate the fragility of AHC mice and then performed behavioral, electrophysiological, biochemical, and molecular testing to comparatively analyze mice that carry either of the two most common AHC patient observed variants in the Atp1a3 gene. Collectively, our data reveal the presence but also the differential impact of the p.D801N and p.E815K variants on disease relevant alterations such as spontaneous and stress-induced paroxysmal episodes, motor function, behavioral and neurophysiological activity, and neuroinflammation. Our alternate AHC mouse models with their phenotypic deficits open novel avenues for the investigation of disease biology and therapeutic testing for ATP1A3 research.

Students’ self-authoring mobile App for integrative learning of STEM

This paper proposes the integrative learning of technology and science in which students create their own science applications on smartphones. The proposed learning aims to help students experience what science is and how it is technically utilized. In addition, discipline-specific representations were emphasized in the learning design to help students translate between those in different disciplinary and build up their meta-representational competence, central to engineering professional practice as well as learning about engineering design process in school. During the integrative learning, students were also expected to experience the shift of coding from studying how to write a program code to how to control a device to solve a problem, the computational thinking. The proposed learning practice was held and evaluated with 85 participants from high schools and universities. The results showed that students were motivated, and valued the proposed learning practice. Students perceived the usefulness and ease of use of the tools adopted in the learning practice. The study results suggest that the use of smartphones in education may support the orchestrating of the teaching and learning of science and engineering. © The Author(s) 2018.
