Cities in the Global South face dual pressures from intensifying heat stress and widespread urban browning. However, the specific trends in urban heat stress across these cities, alongside those induced by urban browning, remain inadequately quantified, hampering effective urban planning and intervention strategies. Here we present a data-driven methodology to generate high-resolution (1 km) summertime Heat Index (HI) maps for over 2,300 Global South cities (2003–2020). This dataset recalibrates HI-based warming rates, revealing a mean trend (KHI) of 0.41 ± 0.01 °C per decade (mean ± standard error) across these cities. Urban browning exacerbates heat stress significantly, withKHIincreases surpassing 0.05 °C per decade in cities such as those in Nigeria, contrasting starkly with greening-induced cooling observed in many Global North cities. Our analysis pinpoints cities in dire need of intervention, such as those in Botswana and Côte d’Ivoire facing browning-driven HI increases without commensurate economic growth. Contrastingly, Chinese and Indian cities exhibit a paradoxical cooling trend, potentially linked to greening initiatives amid economic development. Our findings highlight key action imperatives for South–South knowledge exchange to develop targeted governance strategies for achieving urban sustainability.

This study attempts to enhance students’ willingness to communicate in the field of English technical terms learning. The proposed learning design aims to train students in using various meaning negotiation strategies to discuss and clarify the meaning of given English technical terms and acquire the different aspects of word knowledge of these terms. Twenty-five senior students in a technology institute were provided with interesting corporative films introducing these English technical terms. At the end, participants completed a video-making project demonstrating the target English technical terms. The pre- and post-test of English technical terms and survey of willingness to communicate showed that the proposed learning not only improved students’ vocabulary, but also increased significantly their willingness to communicate in English. The results could provide a new way of English technical terms learning. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. This study compared the learning effectiveness, speaking time length, communication competence, foreign language speaking anxiety, and cognitive loads of high and low English proficiency students playing the roles of both assessors and practitioners in a mobile-assisted language learning activity. This study integrated a concept-mapping application as a mind tool with an oral recorder application on tablets to support EFL learners speaking English. The system, named CMAS (i.e., the Concept Mapping-Assisted Speaking system), includes peer assessment and evaluation of concept maps at the end of each round of activities. After three rounds, the results indicated that the overall speaking effectiveness including appropriateness of vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, fluency, grammar, and accuracy of the high proficiency students was significantly higher than that of the low proficiency students. The cognitive loads of the low proficiency students were higher than those of the high proficiency students. However, there was no significant difference between the length of speaking time of the two groups. There was no remarkable difference between the speaking anxieties of the two groups after the experiment. The CMAS benefited not only the high-proficiency students but also the low-proficiency students, especially in terms of the speaking time length and the speaking anxieties of the low-proficiency students so future research directions were identified based on the results. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type. Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D. We identify 1,289 independent association signals at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10) that map to 611 loci, of which 145 loci are, to our knowledge, previously unreported. We define eight non-overlapping clusters of T2D signals that are characterized by distinct profiles of cardiometabolic trait associations. These clusters are differentially enriched for cell-type-specific regions of open chromatin, including pancreatic islets, adipocytes, endothelial cells and enteroendocrine cells. We build cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores in a further 279,552 individuals of diverse ancestry, including 30,288 cases of T2D, and test their association with T2D-related vascular outcomes. Cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores are associated with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and end-stage diabetic nephropathy across ancestry groups, highlighting the importance of obesity-related processes in the development of vascular outcomes. Our findings show the value of integrating multi-ancestry genome-wide association study data with single-cell epigenomics to disentangle the aetiological heterogeneity that drives the development and progression of T2D. This might offer a route to optimize global access to genetically informed diabetes care.

Investigating the Advantages and Disadvantages of Taiwan's Industrial Design Education from department Evaluation Data

With Taipei being nominated for the World Design Capital 2016, an event that emphasize 'design thinking,' issues such as identifying Taiwan's design education development trends and crucial factors influencing Taiwan's design industry development must be addressed for Taiwan's future design education. This study conducted a pilot study to investigate design department objectives, analysed designer abilities required by businesses, and referred to the design department evaluations. The results showed that for industrial design departments, issues that required most improvements were: (a) concerning those to better implement self-improvement mechanisms so that course learning objectives are adjusted to meet business expectations; and (b) Space and equipment should be upgraded. In addition to the upgrade, the actual requirements of the enterprise should be consulted for planning. In addition to making such changes, design departments should plan design education according to the actual requirements of businesses. The results of this study may be used as reference when engaging in department planning for the development of industrial design education in Taiwan.

The presence of disseminated ores and quartz vein ores in orogenic gold deposits, has given rise to an ongoing discourse surrounding the mechanisms of gold precipitation. This study employs trace element analysis and sulfur isotope analysis of pyrite in the orogenic Linglong gold field to comparatively assess the gold precipitation processes. Pyrite in disseminated ores (Pyd) is classified into Pyd1 and Pyd2, with gold primarily hosted in Pyd2, followed by Pyd1. In the context of quartz vein ores (Pyv), pyrite is subdivided into Pyv1, Pyv2, and Pyv3, with gold predominantly hosted in Pyv3. In the context of disseminated ores, the Au and As content is below the solid solubility limit of Au in pyrite, thereby suggesting that gold primarily exists as a solid solution (Au 1+ ). The lg (Co)/lg (Ni) ratios in Pyd are −0.11 ± 1.23, predominantly below 1, suggesting water–rock interactions. The significantly lower ratios observed in Pyd2 (−0.26 ± 1.21) suggest intense water–rock interaction. The Ag/Co ratios in Pyd1 and Pyd2 are 0.074 and 23.65, with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 31.57 and 25.91, respectively, indicating weak fluid boiling. Furthermore, the sulfur isotope values (medians of 5.51 ‰ ± 0.81 ‰) indicate stable oxygen fugacity in disseminated ores. The presence of visible gold in the quartz veins ores of Pyv2 and Pyv3, in contrast to the low gold content observed in the pyrite (median value of 0.03 ppm), further substantiates these observations. The lg (Co)/lg (Ni) ratio for Pyv is 0.98 ± 2.04, which is close to 1, indicating weak water–rock reactions. The Ag/Co ratios in Pyv1, Pyv2, and Pyv3 are 0.0008, 0.009, and 0.09, with RSD values of 10.5, 63.55, and 89.86, respectively. The values of Pyv2 and Pyv3 are significantly higher than those in Pyv, indicating fluid boiling. Furthermore, a decline in sulfur isotope values from 7.6 ‰ ± 0.2 ‰ in Pyv1 to 5.0 ‰ ± 1.2 ‰ in Pyv3 is indicative of an increase in oxygen fugacity. The analysis of pyrite indicates th

Geographic Information Discipline serves as a critical pillar driving continuous innovation in Earth system science, geography, smart cities, and ecological conservation. Against the backdrop of intensified global environmental changes and diversified societal demands, this discipline faces a dual-challenge of theoretical innovation and technological breakthrough. This paper analyzes geographic information discipline from three perspectives: disciplinary demands, development strategies, and frontier challenges. In terms of disciplinary demands, we explores the requirements of Earth system science for multi-source data integration, dynamic model construction, and cross-scale analysis, as well as the evolving trends of geography within the framework of the ternary world (i.e., physical, human, and information). Regarding development strategies, we proposes strategic pathways from a multidisciplinary perspective encompassing information science, information geography, and geolinguistics. These include advancing the discipline through geographic language development, multi-modal representation, virtual-real integration, and the establishment of a universal language framework. Meanwhile, the paper addresses current theoretical and technical bottlenecks, such as insufficient modeling of information world, limited capacity for high-dimensional dynamic data processing, and the technical demand for real-time 3D scene representation. We emphasizes that under the globalization and digital transformation, geoinformatics is undergoing a comprehensive leap from the physical-human duality to the physical-human-information triad by integrating theories from information science, geography, and cognitive science. Moving forward, the discipline must focus on intelligent systems, multidimensional dynamic analysis, and multidisciplinary collaborative innovation to better address complex geographic phenomena and provide scientific and technological support for global environmental manage

Validation of lean transformation sustainability assessment tool for manufacturing industry: Experts’ insights

Transformation from traditional mass and batch manufacturing into lean manufacturing has helped many organisations to become more successful in their business. However, there are facts and figures that show most manufacturing organisations have failed to sustain this success in the long run. One of the reason is, the lack of effective measurement criteria to assess their progress in lean transformation. The purpose of this article was to develop a valid assessment tool that measures manufacturing organisations’ lean transformation sustainability level. An assessment tool in the form of survey questionnaire was developed and tested for content validity using a panel of ten experts. An item content validity index was calculated for each indicator measuring lean transformation sustainability. Items with content validity indexes greater than 0.80 were retained and item with lower content validity index were discarded. The assessment tool has evidence of content validity and will need further test using statistical techniques to determine construct validity and reliability.
