Device-free electromagnetic passive localization using link line information in wireless sensor networks

The electromagnetic passive localization without the need of carrying any device, named device-free passive localization (DFPL) technique, is an emerging technology for determining an uncooperative target's position. The DFPL technique detects the shadowed links in a monitored area and realizes localization with the received signal strength (RSS) measurements of these links. However, most current RSS-based DFPL schemes belong to the model-based DFPL method, since the localization accuracy depends on the shadowing model. Moreover, model-based DFPL methods require high memory and computing resources for accurate tracking performance, and thus may not be suitable for resource-constrained applications. To overcome these problems, in this paper we propose a lightweight DFPL method which makes use of recent link lines detected by wireless sensor networks to estimate the target's location. This method can be independent of the shadowing model and can also reduce the algorithm's storage and computational resource requirements. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed scheme are demonstrated by experimental results where the proposed algorithm yields substantial improvement for localization performance and complexity. © 2016 Electromagnetics Academy. The Asia-Pacific(AP)region has experienced faster warming than the global average in recent decades and has experienced more climate extremes,however little is known about the response of vegetation growth to these *** updated Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies third-generation global satellite Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Normalized Difference Vegetation Index dataset and gridded reanalysis climate data were used to investigate the spatiotemporal changes in both trends of vegetation dynamic indicators and climatic *** then further analyzed their relations associated with land cover across the AP *** main findings are threefold:(1)at continental scales the AP region overall experienced a gradual and significant increasing trend in vegetation growth during the last three decades,and this NDVI trend corresponded with an insignificant increasing trend in temperature;(2)vegetation growth was negatively and significantly correlated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation(ENSO)in AP;and(3)at pixel scales,except for Australia,both vegetation growth and air temperature significantly increased in the majority of study regions and vegetation growth spatially correlated with temperature;In Australia and other water-limited regions vegetation growth positively correlated with precipitation.

In the pressure control of a pneumatic drive system, there is a possibility that leads to hazard (accident) based on the ejection of high pressure air, the rupture of the vessel, etc. Many of these accidents are caused by the hazard side error by the control, or caused by the hazard side failure of the various components in the system. To cope with these problems, the interlock system proposed by the authors in 2013 can eliminate the hazard side failure in the pneumatic drive system. This interlock system is constructed according to the principles of the safety (confirmation). But, a shutdown at an interlock operation is an inevitable state. At the same time, unnecessary shutdowns should be avoided. Therefore, in accordance with the principles of safety (confirmation), the control strategy is demanded strongly for creating the safety conditions to give the interlock system the operation permission. In this study, our considerations devoted into the pressure control of the pneumatic drive system. First of all, the shutdown structure was defined by using our interlock system. Next, the regulating safety control was designed to create a safe condition. Finally, as a condition of safety control, the purpose control of pneumatic drive system was examined. Here, the safety control strategy consisting of three of the purpose control, the regulating safety control, and the interlocks discussed.

Most traditional science and engineering instructions in universities are topic-based and authoritative, and students do not necessarily feel the teaching and its content to be personally important or useful. Students' science and engineering learning needs to be more personal, authentic, and meaningful to them. In reviewing potential technologies for achieving such learning benefit, several studies have found that video recording of teachers' own teaching practice as well as its viewing and sharing support self-reflection and peers critical review. As to students, although videos have become essential to many aspects of their daily life, little research has related video recording to their engineering learning. This study proposes that, as a type of multimedia, videos can be used by students to review and reflect their engineering knowledge. The video project requires students to use the multimedia technology tools to present an engineering topic as a proposed tandem learning of both multimedia and engineering courses. That is, students' learning of an engineering subject content is embedded into the video-making project in a multimedia course. The corresponding learning activities is expected to shed a new light on improving engineering education.

Based on Bhattacherjee's(2001) expectation-confirmation model, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of expectation, perceived enjoyment, and perceived usefulness on satisfaction and continuance intention of a digital textbook in middle school and to suggest instructional strategies to maintain satisfaction and continuance intention of digital textbooks for middle school students. The subjects of this study were Korean middle school students taking an English class taught by a digital textbook in E middle school, Seoul. The digital textbook used in this study consisted of four stages(listen, listen and repeat, talk with a foreigner, and practice with friends) for learning English. Data were collected via a paper-and-pencil-based questionnaire with 17 items, and 137 responses were analyzed. The study found that(a) the more expectation of a digital textbook is satisfied, the more likely students are to perceive enjoyment and usefulness of digital textbook,(b) satisfaction plays a mediating role in linking expectation, perceived enjoyment and perceived usefulness, and continuance intention of a digital textbook,(c) perceived usefulness and satisfaction have a direct and positive influence on continuance intention of a digital textbook, and(d) perceived enjoyment has non-significant influence on continuance intention of a digital textbook of middle school students. Based on these findings, the implications and limitations of the study are presented, along with recommendations for future research.

This paper presents conceptual design and feasibility analysis for oversized grain harvesting combine headers with dynamic topology. To meet customer harvesting productivity requirements, the harvesting header must increase in width from 40 to 60 feet, yet be usable on current generation combine harvesters. While designing concepts for an oversized harvester head is a complex problem by itself, it also presents a latent challenge with packaging and transporting. Transporting a 60ft harvester header using traditional methods will violate road transport regulations imposed by US state and federal governments. This warrants innovations in both designing an oversized header concepts and viable means to package it for domestic and international shipping. The Advanced Systems Design Suite (ASDS) was used to design, visualize and perform quick assessment of the proposed concept designs. Three preliminary design concepts were generated based on customer requirements and manufacturer’s guidelines, of which one design was chosen for transitioning into detailed design stages. Static engineering analysis showed that the combine harvester’s feederhouse mount can support the additional mass of the larger header. Articulation mechanisms were represented by primitive shapes created in ASDS to visualize the preliminary design solution for packaging the header for transportation. Finite Element Analyses (FEA) was performed to determine the required size, shape, and position of the articulation mechanisms. Harvest productivity analyses were performed to assess business feasibility on the oversized header design. Header performance requirements identified potential time and monetary savings of an articulated header compared to a non articulated head of the same size. Reducing the time required to perform "non-harvesting activities" with currently available combines enables the manufacturer to generate a more feasible detailed design addressing this difficult design challenge. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the steps taken by human resource (HR) managers at India’s Yes Bank to enhance employee retention and to create an environment conducive to growth. Design/methodology/approach – Information gathered from semi-structured interviews has been presented. Findings – This paper reveals how Yes Bank has transformed its working environment through innovative HR practices. Practical implications – The approach adopted by an emerging Indian bank to address various HR issues has been detailed, and it is shown how the bank responded to changes and challenges in the internal and external environments. Social implications – This paper explains that Indian banks are about to come under increasing competitive pressure, as limits on foreign direct investment are relaxed. Originality/value – This paper provides plenty to interest practicing managers, researchers and students in HR management, organizational behavior and industrial relations.

Precipitation data at high spatio-temporal resolution are essential for hydrological, meteorological, and ecological research in local basins and regions. The coarse spatial resolution (0.25°) of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 product is insufficient for practical requirements. In this paper, a multivariable geographically weighted regression (GWR) downscaling method was developed to obtain 1 km precipitation. The GWR method was compared with two other downscaling methods [univariate regression (UR) and multivariate regression (MR)] in terms of the performance of downscaled annual precipitation. Variables selection procedures were proposed for selecting appropriate auxiliary factors in all three downscaling methods. To obtain the monthly 1 km precipitation, two monthly downscaling strategies (annual-based fraction disaggregation method and monthly based GWR method) were evaluated. All analysis was tested in Gansu province, China with a semiarid to arid climate for three typical years. Validation with measurements from 24 rain gauge stations showed that the proposed GWR method performed consistently better than the UR and MR methods. Two monthly downscaling methods were efficient in deriving the monthly precipitation at 1 km. The former method faces the challenge of precipitation spatial heterogeneity and the derived monthly precipitation heavily depends on the annual downscaled results, which could lead to the accumulation of errors. The monthly based GWR method is suitable for downscaling monthly precipitation, but the accuracy of original TRMM 3B43 data would have large influence on downscaling results. It was demonstrated that the proposed method was effective for obtaining both annual and monthly TRMM 1 km precipitation with high accuracy. © 2015 IEEE.

The study aims to explore whether different amount of the first language (Chinese) information will lead to different effectiveness on high school students' listening comprehension and vocabulary recall. Furthermore, the study also discusses the relationship between different difficult degrees of videos with two kinds given amount of subtitles/captions and students' learning performance in English listening comprehension and vocabulary recall. One class was given the full first language subtitled movie with no foreign language captions while the other class was given the partial first language subtitled movie with full foreign language captions. The findings indicated that although the students received only the assistant of the partial first language subtitles, learners' understanding of the listening comprehension will not be affected and their performance in the vocabulary recall test statistically better than those who use the full first language.
