The paper reports on our work developing a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional approach to teaching Ethical, Social, Safety, Health, and Environmental Issues in Nanotechnology. Under a grant from NSF, we are developing, implementing, and assessing two modular courses that include societal, ethical, environmental, health, and safety issues related to nanotechnology for undergraduates in engineering and engineering technology. It is a collaborative project between Texas State University, a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler), whose student population is 60 percent women. The work is being conducted by a highly interdisciplinary team of faculty who bring to the project expertise from mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial education and technology, physics, biology, philosophy, and ethics. Here we explain the origin of the project, explicate how we have developed the course modules, review the first two semesters (Summer and Fall 2013) teaching from these modules, and examine our initial results and evaluations.

This study focused on how to enhance the interactivity and usefulness of augmented reality (AR) by replacing the fixed AR recognition card with manipulative interactive tools. A manipulative augmented reality (MAR) system, which included 3D interactive models and manipulative aids, was designed and developed to teach the unit "Understanding Weather" in a natural science course, and to bridge a formal learning environment (i.e., school), non-formal (i.e., at a museum), and informal learning environments (i.e., home).

:Four new curcuminoid pyrazoles (1–4) were synthesized by one-pot combinatorial modification of the total curcuminoid extract, through chemical transformation of β-diketone functionalities byp-chlorophenylhydrazine. All four curcuminoid pyrazoles were identified by spectroscopic methods, and the structure of compound 4 was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Compounds 1 and 2, with a long conjugated system and at least one methoxy substitution, showed a more potent antiviral effect than did the corresponding natural product, curcumin. The rapid synthesis of curcuminoid pyrazoles with improved antiviral activity highlights the great potential of one-pot combinatorial modification for the diversification of natural products with improved bioactivities.

Exploring Organizational Learning Mechanisms in Small‐Size Business Enterprises

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the importance of existing organizational learning mechanisms and establish the size and magnitude of the relationship among the organizational learning mechanisms. Of great import also was to determine whether statistically significant relationships existed among the organizational learning mechanisms. An exploratory correlational research design was utilized to survey 498 employees from seven small‐size business enterprises located in the Southern and Mid‐Western United States. Mean scores indicated that respondents perceived leadership and evaluative inquiry as the prevalent learning mechanisms within the organizations studied. According to the findings, certain types of small‐size business enterprises exhibit organizational learning characteristics more so than do others involved in the study. The results of the correlation analysis showed that the learning mechanisms leadership and culture had the highest level of association, followed by culture and systems and structures.

East Japan Transport technology Co., Ltd., Japan has introduced engineer training programs in its facility. The company's personnel training measures include the main business whose contents are divided into the maintenance and manufacturing of vehicles. Maintenance of various railway vehicles involves inspection and repair of vehicles and parts of various railway companies including JR East, running on conventional lines, linear motor car type subways, and new transportation systems. Design, installation, and maintenance of equipment required for maintenance involves planning a whole car depot with stretching from the cleaning and carrier equipment of vehicles and their parts to the part inspection equipment. Another such measure involves Vehicle manufacturing cooperating with the JR East vehicle factory. It works jointly with Niitsu Rolling Stock Plant to take care of the wide range works, including the partial manufacturing process of the vehicle which is operating in the Keihin Tohoku line, Sobu line, Yamanote line and Chuo line.

This research aims to explore the contents of a school's soft power, including culture, strategy, leadership, learning, marketing and innovation. Managing soft power not only is critical for a school's development, but also should be regarded as a indispensible asset of schools. The measures for a school to establish its soft power are: establishing core values, shaping a learning school, emphasizing on knowledge management, innovating, and introducing a more adaptive marketing strategy. A school could become more perspective and sustainable through soft power, and thus be able to deal with a fast-changing educational environment and meet practical requirements. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2012.

Employee engagement mainly consists of three dimensions, namely emotional engagement, cognitive engagement and physical engagement. The aim of the current research was to determine whether a leadership initiative such as a leadership orientation workshop had a positive influence on the engagement of engineers at a gold mining plant in South Africa. A qualitative research method was utilized by conducting group interviews with engineers. Six focus group interviews with engineers from the plant were conducted. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The narrative data was broken down into smaller units, coded and named according to the content represented. The recurring themes were then categorized and described. Categories such as bottom-up leadership, transformational leadership, charismatic leadership, authentic leadership, change leadership, mind-set training, values, strategic alignment, two-way feedback, recognition, trust, diversity, safety, relationships, job profiles, performance management and career development were identified. The charismatic leadership style of the plant manager and his commitment to engaging the engineers were strong themes throughout the research. The importance of enabling managers to become leaders was also clear. The overall perceptions were that the leadership workshop initiated employee engagement amongst the engineers.

The purpose of the study reported here was to explore cross-cultural training programs and expatriate adjustment effectiveness that increase effective cross-cultural interaction. Effective cross-cultural training increases trainees' knowledge, encourages them to see the personal and organizational benefits of cultural diversity and cross-cultural competence, and increases their skill and capacity to work with cultural diversity. Cross-cultural training is an effective strategy in the achievement of organizational performance targets and multicultural policy objectives. Addressing the identified limitations of current practice in CCT will increase its contribution to the development and enhancement of organizational and individual cultural competence. Moreover, developing cross-cultural training programs could add value to the firm and its people. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2012.

Technical education mainly focuses on the development of students' motor skills. At vocational educational schools in Taiwan, technical teachers usually teach skills in a big class. Therefore, those teachers always face the problems of not realizing students' learning process and difficulties;the evaluation is also deficient in credibility and validity. The learners' self-reflection can help teachers understand their learning process. In this study, the researchers analyze the objectives, strategies and introspection emphasis in the skill-training stages and provide recommendations for students to reflect in each phase. Then the researchers apply these recommendations as the basis of introspection to build a Web-based learning portfolio (WBLP) for skill training. The results of this study reveal that the Moodle platform conforms to the requirements of building a Web-based self-reflective learning portfolio for technical training purpose. Besides, this paper has mapped out the Moodle Modules that provide the self-reflection features for a technical-training WBLP. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2012.
