This study focuses on the issue of how kanji learners mentally "deconstruct" a kanji as they view it and how they may update this visual deconstruction over time as they learn kanji. The research problem deals with the question of whether or not an innovative kanji learning approach, the "Learner's Visualization (LV) Approach", assists learners in significantly updating their personal kanji deconstruction visualization (which refers to how the learner visually divides a given kanji into smaller, manageable parts). With the LV Approach, in contrast to other kanji learning approaches, kanji learners themselves decide which way to divide a kanji into smaller parts, allowing them to thus choose the complexity level and number of parts of that particular kanji according to their personal visual cognition. To support the analysis of the kanji visualization process, we developed a kanji learning support system based on the LV Approach. The analysis of our results proves the existence of the positive effect of using this novel approach in kanji learning;learners progressively move towards visually dividing kanji into fewer and fewer blocks. ©2009 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a two-phase mobile transaction validation protocol making the best use of the strong point of (1, m) indexing broadcast data organization in wireless broadcast environments. It is based on OCC(Optimistic Concurrency Control) protocol which minimizes the excessive bi-directional communication by making transactions execute unhindered to their validation point. In the proposed protocol, the validation of a mobile transaction is performed in two-phase: partial validation phase and final validation phase. The partial validation is performed at the mobile client based on the control information contained in the broadcast disk and the final validation is performed on the committed and active transactions at the server. The proposed protocol tries to minimize the restart rate of mobile transactions as well as average transaction response time through adjusting serialization order of mobile transactions by exploiting the potential read/write set of mobile transactions. As the Internet has been growing, WWW(World Wide Web) based services have become more popular, and the number of those using the service has increased excessively. To support these services, the processing of many transactions has become essential in the Internet. There are many researches regarding user profiling on web services to support those transactions effectively. Most of them are just for grasping the customer's preferences. However, the user's role on a recent web service is not limited. It is not fixed what they are doing among users; consumers could become providers and also providers could become consumers on virtual online environments such as the open market of the Internet. For this reason, it is necessary to inspect preference of both the consumer as well as the provider. In addition, the traditional service lacks of representing of various provider's preferences. In this paper, we proposed a Personal Preference Tree (PPT) to reflect the preferences for providers then implemented the module applied to the web service. Likewise, we evaluated the applicability and the performance of the personal preference module through simulations.

We propose a new notion of hoardset fragmentablilty and SSMT(Split Synchronizing Mobile Transaction) model for ubiquitous mobile clients, which not only assures transaction atomicity in synchronization but also reduces synchronization cost and provides context-awareness in ubiquitous computing environment with uneven conditioning. It splits the synchronization process of a mobile transaction into 2 parts by exploiting the hoardset fragmentability of data objects which the mobile transaction access: preferred and deferred synchronization part. The deferred synchronization part which has no possibility of conflict uses the data-centric synchronization strategy and its synchronization is delayed. The preferred synchronization part with possibility of conflicts is synchronized early using the transaction-centric synchronization strategy. We also propose a new data hoarding and synchronization mechanism which facilitates the split synchronization of SSMT. The performance evaluation model for the SSMT is developed and its results are compared to a conventional transaction-centric synchronization model. © 2008 ACM.

Conventional Fisher Linear Discriminant analysis (FLD) for pattern classification yields a single dominant feature which comes from the unique eigenvector having a nonzero eigenvalue due to a rank-one matrix. Consequently *** had developed an optimal orthogonal system for FLD, and it had a good performance on applications. Recently S. Mika extended FLD to nonlinear kernel space. The extension is called Kernel Fisher Discriminant (KFD) which is related to a support vector machine. Despite of its better performance, it has the limitation which has only m-1 features on m-class classification problem. We propose a novel method that applies on this orthogonal system and achieves better performance by finding more orthogonal features in the nonlinear feature space. The simulation result shows that our method is more effective in pattern recognition. © 2008 IADIS.

A top priority of global management is to manage change, which requires establishing an innovative organization to be responsive to change. Traditional and matrix organizations lack an effective horizontal structure to construct core elements required for organizational learning. An innovative organization is required to implement those core elements such as self-actualization, self-development, social acceptation, shared vision and transformational leadership. Managerial innovation is achieved by incorporating organizational learning within the innovative organization. The alignment of the core elements required for organizational learning with the key factors of an innovative organization enables an environment inspiring individuals¿ passion and initiative to manage change. Factors critical to the successful deployment of an innovative organization are presented in this study in terms of volunteer assignment, multi-task competence, autonomous community, employee entrusted authority, floating authorization and peer-group decision making.

Understanding better the experiences of students pursuing an engineering degree is an important issue for the pedagogy of engineering programs. This study sought to identify students' perceptions of their educational experiences and their motivations for and dreams of a career in engineering. The study also provided a snapshot of the current status of engineering education at this institution from the perspective of engineering students-including students' decisions behind their choice of engineering as a major, the learning experiences of engineering students, and gender-related perspectives regarding engineering education. The findings suggest opportunities to improve the educational process for students in this engineering program. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007.

We propose a new cache coherency scheme named HCCS(Hybrid Cache Coherency Scheme) to facilitate ubiquitous data access of mobile clients. To cope with the limitations of ubiquitous computing environments, it integrates the cache invalidation scheme using broadcast channel into the publish/subscribe-based data synchronization scheme using two-way communication channel. We present novel algorithms and system architecture for the HCCS. By integrating two schemes, the HCCS provides substantial benefits: allows updates on the mobile client which are restricted in the cache invalidation scheme using broadcast channel and disconnected operations, improves the scalability. The HCCS scheme also gives proper support to the short disconnection of mobile clients, dynamically adapts to changes of disconnection period of the mobile clients. © 2007 IEEE.
