Productive Consumption Changing Market Dynamics: A Study in Brazilian DIY Cosmetics

Although several studies have discussed from various perspectives the market-change dynamics of consumption and how consumers impact them, only a few have looked at consumers who act as producers themselves and how they affect the market with their self-production practices. Using data from netnography, participant observation, introspection, and in-depth interviews, this study aims to understand the strategies used by the consumers of DIY (do-it-yourself) cosmetics, which affect the market dynamics and foster a specific market apart from mainstream. We identified three approaches: the strategies such consumers use to make their products;the sharing of consumption experiences;and the disclosure of these products and practices, thereby legitimating them. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

This paper proposes a control strategy consisting of a robust controller and an Echo State Network (ESN) based control law for stabilizing a class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems subject to persistent disturbances. Firstly, the robust controller is designed to ensure that the closed-loop system is Input-to-State Stable (ISS) with a guaranteed stability region regardless of the ESN control action and exogenous disturbances. Then, the ESN-based controller is trained in order to mitigate the effects of disturbances on the system output. A numerical example demonstrates the potential of the proposed control design method.

This paper presents a method to determine hysteresis parameters of an inductor's core with a closed magnetic circuit based on electric current and voltage curves of a damped LC circuit. The proposed procedure makes use of the concept of hysteresis modeling by separating the magnetic field into four components, which can be linearized in terms of its parameters. Thus, curves can be adjusted with a stochastic method in order to match experimental ones, allowing for determination of hysteresis parameters.

The identification of a nonlinear system with chaotic behavior denoted Chua's oscillator by using fuzzy models intertwined with particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is presented. This hybrid approach is applied to experimental data generated by an inductorless Chua's circuit that consists of an electronic chaotic oscillator. Chua's circuit has been used as a test platform by various scientific and engineering communities related to the study of chaos due its great potencial in technological applications, for instance, telecommunications, cryptography and physics. Fuzzy set theory has been evolved as a powerful modeling tool that can cope with uncertainties and nonlinearities in modeling and identification procedures. The identification of a optimized fuzzy model Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model involves two primary tasks: parameter tuning and structure optimization. The premise part of production rules is optimized here by using the particle swarm optimization method. In turn, least mean squares technique is applied to the consequent part of a T-S fuzzy model. Results indicate PSO method and Least Mean Square technique succeeded in constructing a T-S fuzzy model when dealing with chaotic dynamics obtained through experimental data supplied by inductorless Chua's electronic circuit.

The communication system is essential for the devices used in IoT. Nevertheless, the consumption caused by transmitting and receiving data is a concern in many scenarios. That is due to these devices commonly having limited energy and computational capacities. Transmission of redundant or irrelevant samples frequently wastes the device’s resources. Furthermore, Storing a large amount of redundant data could consume storage space and not offer any benefit. Data Compression (DC) methods are a potential solution. DC could reduce communication usage and storage demand. This research proposes the Training Swing Door Trending (TSDT) for being implemented in IoT Devices. TSDT is a new algorithm that improves the classic Swing Door Trending (STD). They represent the data by trend lines and have a constant computational complexity. TSDT has a training step for the automatic configuration of its parameters. This article additionally presents the Compression Factor (C-Score), a new quality metric to analyze the compression results in lossy DC methods. C-Score takes as a basis the F-Score, a measure of predictive performance. The C-Score uses the Compression and Error metrics to evaluate the compression performance in Lossy Algorithms.

The Circular Economy is driven by sustainable strategies of management and the reuse of materials and power to try to decrease the demand of resources and minimize the environmental impacts. Aligned to said perspective, the Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is opposite to the linear production's logic, enabling the sharing of resources, waste, and by-products, that is, the circular flow of power, water, materials, and information. In the last few years, to improve these IS strategies, platforms and tools were created to intermediate this process and facilitate the match between those who demand and offer waste and resources, such as the online waste markets or e-marketplaces. From this perspective, the objective of this study is to evaluate how these tools contributed to the IS process, going beyond the problem of the local factor. For this purpose, ten online platforms, found in the literature, were selected. The analysis was made based on the identification of key elements, which enabled the creation of a list with different types of traded materials, sectors and areas served, how wide was the service, the year when the activities started and, ultimately, the business model adopted. As a result, the evaluation shows that these tools enhance the symbiosis process because they approach the parties and facilitate the identification of synergies. Generally, the use of online platforms widens the geographic scope of the IS processes, enabling the interaction of parties from different places and regions. Was observed that these tools are characterized by the use of intelligent systems, based on algorithms that identify and recommend relations, providing greater assertiveness and speed to the decision-making process. Among the research's findings, we must stress that the IS potential extends much beyond the reuse of waste. There are opportunities for other synergies, such as infrastructure and service sharing. Finally, it was highlighted that, although they present many benefits

The MIT iLab Shared Architecture (ISA) is widely used to support remote experimentation, providing basic functionalities such as users management, scheduling, access control and results storage. This paper addresses the optimization of LabVIEW-based RE's creation under ISA, with the standardization of common lab server functionalities and communications. The Experiment Lab Server Architecture (ELSA), created as an ISA extension, fulfills the requirements of an ISA process agent and uses web services to connect the client with the lab server. ELSA automatically manages the initial definition and runtime traffic of experiment-specific input/output parameters. Once the experiment and client codes are created, RE configuration, startup and operation can be easily accomplished. In a pilot implementation using ELSA, the web services mediation of data transfer performed at rates high enough for a smooth user interaction experience. ELSA web services approach allows for a loose coupling in RE design and can effectively shorten its development cycle.

This research aims to build a mathematical model to formulate the problems of implementing knowledge management systems in companies that often face obstacles in achieving the desired objectives and goals. With increasing competition in the business sector, organizations or organizations realize the importance of utilizing the knowledge assets that reside in each individual and organization. If this knowledge can be managed optimally, it can become a competitive advantage for the company due to the emergence of innovative ideas by the concepts of knowledge management theory. By implementing optimal knowledge management (KM), companies can design innovative solutions to improve business operations and increase overall revenue. The factor analysis method will be used to find the determining factors for the success of the implementation of knowledge management systems (KMS) and the regression analysis method will also be used to form a mathematical model of several new factors which are formed as independent variables with the current level of community understanding of KMS as the dependent variable. The research results provide insight into strategies to improve success factors to successfully facilitate KMS implementation. This study contributes to existing knowledge management by providing insight into dynamics that go beyond the technical aspects of KMS, ultimately developing strategies for more effective and efficient utilization of knowledge and organizational growth and supporting competitive advantage for companies.

Electromagnetic nondestructive inspection for high-speed moving ferromagnetic materials is necessary for manufacturing efficiency. In this paper, we present a novel leakage magnetic flux (LMF) method to estimate the crack position in a moving cylindrical ferromagnetic rod. The method directly measures the first-order Fourier coefficients of the LMF moving with the crack by using only two coils with DC excitation. The location of a crack is estimated by the proposed method, as demonstrated for an S45C cylindrical rod.

Most operating systems implement their own power management techniques, but it is hard to modify or hack their power policies without the source code. Many dynamic power management architectures have been proposed in the literature, but they are not integrated with the underlying OS power manager. In this work, we propose a software framework for user-level power management, with a flexible architecture to be adapted to different policies and integrated with OS power managers.
