Power policies are widely applied at computer systems such as desktops, notebooks, and smartphones. For example, the timeout policy to turn off the display. A power management policy must be tested by measuring the power consumption of an experimental platform running workloads. Such tests must be fast enough to feedback the development process with valuable information about the power policy performance. In this work, we have presented a methodology for estimating computer systems power consumption for time scaled experiments. Using the proposed methodology, we have reduced the overall time for developing a power management policy.

Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and users may face interoperability issues migrating applications or exchanging data among distinct clouds due, for instance, to the lack of standards solutions. Several solutions have been proposed to overcome lock-in situations, and middleware platforms are one of them. A semantic interoperability solution named middleware for Data as a Service (DaaS)/Database as a Service (DBaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS)—MIDAS has been developed to overcome this lock-in issue. It is an intermediate communication layer to retrieve data from DaaS or DBaaS through a Structured Query Language (SQL) or a Not Only SQL (NoSQL) created at the SaaS level. MIDAS is a platform for software execution, but software development needs support for its entire life cycle. Therefore, we propose the Model drIven Approach for MIDAS (MIAMI), which enables the specification of platform-independent middleware models and their use to generate code on different cloud platforms. MIAMI comprises a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) that enables middleware models and a transformation specification, which defines how these models can be converted to code. MIAMI offers a strategy for MIDAS specification and code generation phases to help middleware developers’ activities. MIAMI was applied to code generation specifications in Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift, and Heroku providers to evaluate our approach. This specification shows MIAMI’s feasibility and points out that MDD is a promising approach to improving cloud interoperability solutions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Identifying dead regions in the cochlea through the TEN Test

An audiogram is not sufficient to indicate cochlear dead regions. Aim: To investigate cochlear dead regions in sensorineural hearing loss subjects using the TEN test. Site: CEDALVI/ HRAC-USP-Bauru/Sao Paulo/Brazil, August 2003 to February 2004. Study Design: A contemporary cross-sectional cohort study. Material and Methods: The TEN test was applied in three groups: G1(5 women with pure-tone thresholds within normal limits);G2(4 women and 5 men with moderate sensorineural flat hearing loss);G3(19 women and 24 men with mild to severe sloping sensorineural hearing loss). Results: In the G1 group the TEN value required to eliminate the test tone was, on average, close to the absolute threshold for all frequencies. No dead regions were found in the ears tested in group G2. 76 ears were tested in group G3, and six showed no evidence of dead regions in the cochlea. Conclusions:The TEN test was an effective test to indicate a dead region in the cochlea of subjects with sloping sensorineural hearing loss. There is evidence that pure-tone detection is different for subjects with high frequency sensorineural hearing loss and flat hearing loss;we observed a significant difference between the masked threshold and the absolute threshold only in sloping hearing loss and not for flat hearing loss. Gain scheduling has been successfully applied in many different areas due to the positive results achieved when applied to nonlinear control. Its utilization enables the controller to respond rapidly to changes in operating conditions. This study demonstrates the application of gain scheduling to a SMAR didactic level system to implement adaptive control. The results exhibited a strong response with minor errors using a Proportional and Integral (PI) controller, which facilitated the development of two generic equations for determining the values of K p (proportional gain) and K i (integral gain) based on the desired set point.

An efficient multi-objective evolutionary approach for solving the operation of multi-reservoir system scheduling in hydro-power plants

This paper tackles the short-term hydro-power unit commitment problem in a multi-reservoir system - a cascade-based operation scenario. For this, we propose a new mathematical modelling in which the goal is to maximize the total energy production of the hydro-power plant in a sub-daily operation, and, simultaneously, to maximize the total water content (volume) of reservoirs. For solving the problem, we discuss the Multi-objective Evolutionary Swarm Hybridization (MESH) algorithm, a recently proposed multiobjective swarm intelligence-based optimization method which has obtained very competitive results when compared to existing evolutionary algorithms in specific applications. The MESH approach has been applied to find the optimal water discharge and the power produced at the maximum reservoir volume for all possible combinations of turbines in a hydro-power plant. The performance of MESH has been compared with that of well-known evolutionary approaches such as NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, and MOEA/D in a realistic problem considering data from a hydro-power energy system with two cascaded hydro-power plants in Brazil. Results indicate that MESH showed a superior performance than alternative multi-objective approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy, providing a profit of $412,500 per month in a projection analysis carried out. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The theme of sustainable development has increasingly impacted the spheres of Brazilian society and has contributed to greater awareness to the need of natural resources conservation as well as issues on how to continue promoting socio-economic development of regions. One of the key issues for sustainable development is the generation of electricity with more use of renewable sources and, therefore, less environmental degradation. In this scenario, historically, Paraná State of Brazil has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely from hydraulic source, due to the large existing river basin in the state. However, the use of this source in Brazil is declining due to depletion of water potential and also the pressure of society with respect to environmental, social and economic impacts caused by damming of rivers and flooding of cities and areas to form large reservoirs. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and used, such as biomass and wind. Photovoltaic generation has been contemplated in Brazilian government policies only to supply electricity with off-grid systems in remote locations. However, due to the recent Resolution 482/2012 of ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), which establishes rules for micro and mini-generation of electricity, it is possible that consumers install grid connected photovoltaic systems up to 1 MWp, as have been widely used in the urban environment installed or integrated on roofs as a form of distributed generation, particularly in Europe, where counts with installed capacity in GW range, while in Brazil it counts only with a few MW. Given this new perspective of growth of the Brazilian photovoltaic electricity generation this paper presents the potential of solar photovoltaic power generation in Paraná State, Brazil, with a comparative analysis with the potential presented by some European countries. In the current industrial revolution, additive manufacturing (AM) embodies a promising technology that can enhance the effectiveness, adaptability, and competitiveness of supply chains (SCs). Moreover, it facilitates the development of distributed SCs, thereby enhancing product availability, inventory levels, and lead time. However, the wide adoption of AM in industrial SCs creates various challenges, leading to new difficulties for SC design. In this context, this paper proposes a new design approach to AM SCs using optimization methods. More specifically, the proposed approach, comprising the pmedian and mixed-integer linear programming models, considers the decision of deploying productive resources (3D printers) in specific locations of generic spare part SCs. The approach was evaluated in a real-world use case of an elevator maintenance service provider. The obtained results demonstrated the promising capabilities of the proposed design approach in managing the challenges arising from the forthcoming widespread use of 3D printers in manufacturing SCs. © 2020, CC-BY-NC-ND.

The chloroplast (cp) is an essential organelle in higher plants. The genes of the plastome are well suited to infer phylogenetic relationships among taxa. In this study, we report the assembly of the cp genome ofArtocarpus altilisand its phylogeny among species from Moraceae family. The cp genome ofA. altiliswas 160,822 base pair (bp) in length, comprising one large single-copy region of 88,692 bp, one small single-copy region of 19,290 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,420 bp. A total of 113 different genes were predicted, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30tRNA genes, and fourrRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis of 19 species belonging to the Moraceae family confirmed the phylogenetic proximity of the genusArtocarpusandMorusand the genetic similarity ofA. camansiandA. altilis.

Sixth-order Compact Extended Trapezoidal Rules for 2D Schr(o)dinger Equation

Based on high-order linear multistep methods (LMMs), we use the class of extended trapezoidal rules (ETRs) to solve boundary value problems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), whose numerical solutions can be approximated by boundary value methods (BVMs). Then we combine this technique with fourth-order Padé compact approximation to discrete 2D Schrödinger equation. We propose a scheme with sixth-order accuracy in time and fourth-order accuracy in space. It is unconditionally stable due to the favourable property of BVMs and ETRs. Furthermore, with Richardson extrapolation, we can increase the scheme to order 6 accuracy both in time and space. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the accuracy of our scheme.
